Ok guys quick (hopefully not too contraverial) question. I just got a new to me boat with a 2005 yamaha saltwater series oil injected outboard. I really wanna treat her right.
Which two stroke outboard oil do you recommend. Is there a diff between the cheap TWC3 stuff and the name brand stuff?
Thanks for any and all imput.

I ran a 45 Merc for 10 years, using the Quicksilver brand of TCW3 rated oil. When I removed the lower unit to replace the water pump impeller, I looked at the exhaust tube and there was very little carbon built up. About a year later, my brother ran the motor for one summer on WM TCW3 and the engine started losing power. When the powerhead was split from the shaft housing, the exhaust tube was about 50% reduced in cross section due to carbon build up. Once cleaned out, it ran great, and he switched back to the Merc oil. This was in Lake superior in very cold water, but seemed to be due to the change of oil since it ran well for 10 years. Very difficult to remove the carbon, not to mention the amount of time to R and R the powerhead. I would go with the specified oil.

Oils meeting the TCW-3 standard are certified by measuring the wear on the moving parts, not by how much carbon builds up in the exhaust.

Until proven otherwise, I would use the manufactures oil, they want their motor's owners to be happy and for their motors to perform as designed.

I have always used Yamalube for my outboards. I currently own my 6th boat and 5 had Yamaha's. Maybe I was lucky, but I have never had any problems related to oil. So I am partial to the Yamalube Product.
It does cost the extra .05, but well worth it.
