1999 C-Dory Cataraman

I have a 1999 C-Dory Cat. Is the maker of this boat still in business? We just had the entire port side from the water line down peel off 1/8 in thick 2 feet wide 12 foot long strip peeled off into the ocean. According to the Fiberglass guy who is doing the repair it was a factor defect. Something to do with the process used while glassing the boat. Can anyone help with information regarding the Maker of this boat?
 
That sounds expensive... the manufacturer who would have built your catamaran is long since out of business and a new owners now have the molds. Your warranty, if you had one, is not valid and will not be honored unfortunately, although unless it was a lifetimeish hull warranty, being 13 years on the hull, most likely you would be out of luck anyway.

I only speak for myself, but I would love to see some pictures of the failure. That is a sizeable area for delamination to have occured.
 
Ask Ken Ecklund to tell you all about the various ownership changes the factory has gone through. He's a C-Brat and runs charters for you guys. He can also probably help you post up some photos of the problem. Other Brats will be interested to see it.
 
That certainly must have been a shock. Where were you when it happened? I assume you got the boat back safely, since you're having it repaired. How was the trip back?

Did the repair guy tell you why it let go after 12 years? That sounds as if the first layup didn't bond to the rest of the boat. I think we'd all love to know what went wrong, since we all have fiberglass boats.

And finally, I seem to remember that Marbin made a 31' Cat, which was later picked up by an outfit in Alaska. Is this one of those? Sea Wolf should know, right Joe?

Here's what comes to my mind (or what's left of it!):

The 30 foot cats were made by one of the early C-Ddory manufacturers, probably Marben Marine.

They're really big, like 30 feet long by 12 feet wide!

The molds were sold to someone one in Alaska, and the new boats were sold as Black Feather Catamarans. Also, the name ChillKat fits in the history somewhere!

The outfit that Ken Eklund works for as a fishing boat skipper was using two as charter boats when he first went up there several years ago.

I believe one is/or was for sale (at last communication.)

The molds themselves were also for sale.

The links to the Craig's List ads for these are expired, so Ken will have to fill us in about the latest developments.

One of them would make a great Albacore boat, but at 12 feet, would have to be kept at a marina, as trailing it around would require a special wide trailer and probably even pilot cars and permits!

While in Elfin Cove this year talking to Ken on a fishing down day for him, he mentioned to me the lodge owners desire to sell the two CD Cats.  Ken joked to him that I was interested in purchasing them, which I lost no time in denying, & that kinda flattened the joke, at least it did from my perspective.  Now am very glad it was a joke & I really had no interest in their purchase.

Find it perplexing that mylifescrazy, who states he owns one, so must be the lodge owner has not questioned Ken already.

Anyway having seen the boat, talked to Ken about them & met the lodge owner, who if I remember correctly is named Joe, I'm interested in hearing more about this.

Yes more info on the delamination would be useful. Pics as well. We have 2002 tomcat and would be very interested in learning more. Thanks.

My speculation on this thread was wrong. I recieved a PM from Mylifescrazy & he is from a different lodge in Elfin Cove then Ken & the lodge owner he works for, Joe. I wrote him back with encouragement that there are very knowledgable ones here that perhaps could provide more information to him or even Ken or Joe directly in Elfin Cove. Perhaps now that that this is known & if he would provide more information about the boat in question the information he desires could be shared.
