1988 Cruiser Bilge Setup

When I bought my 1988 Cruiser from previous owner, it had an RV shower type pump mounted under galley with a remote pick up sitting on cockpit floor aft of starboard aft cabin bulkhead. No other bilge pump. Would like to know what the factory bilge pump setup was in the early Cruisers. I would like to install additional Johnson Ultima pump in gas tanks area. My boat is moored year around and collects lot of cockpit water at times despite slanted cockpit custom cover.

Thanks for the link Sunbeam. I somehow missed that one. So, sounds like 88s had low point at cabin bulkead instead of stern. I sometimes get so much water (I suspect that after heavy snowfall, water gets in and around cockpit cover. Don't know how else so much water accumulates) that I think a stern bilge pump and float would be good.

That's not hard to do. I knew it was there and still had to search around just to find the link.

I wouldn't say it quite like that. The hull on the 22's has not changed from 1987 to the present. Unless the trim is way off (very stern heavy) the dory shape is always going to result in the low point being amidships (fore/aft). And lots of other boats are the same (sailboats for example). The main "problem" is that with no bilge, you can't just ignore the fact that the water collects amidships. Because it's in your cabin or up against the cabin door. The builders have dealt with it in a variety of ways - to my mind none of them perfect. But that's less "their fault" than it is just the nature of a boat with the hull shape ours has and not wanting to take the space for a bilge (which would be shallow and inconveniently shaped anyway).

You must keep your boat in the water (because otherwise you could just jack it up to be stern low on the trailer), so yeah, you just have to choose your method (of the various methods outlined in the other thread). None are perfect, IMO.
