1984 18' C Dory

Hello, I am new to this site. I live in Homer Alaska and I am thinking of buying a 1984 18' C Dory. The hull and interior look fairly clean however the engine is an older VRO Evinrude 70 hp 2 stroke. The current owner says the steering is frozen. There is no kicker with the boat but there is a mount. The trailer is is good shape although it could use a couple of new tires. The boat has been sitting under cover for 5 years. Is there anyway of knowing what this boat is worth considering I will most likely need a new engine and steering control. Thanks.
 
Might be a rare bird. 18 foot is not a common length. 16 and 19 are. Check the ID plate, should be on the Stbd side, outside or aft wall of the transom.

The only 18 that I know of is a custom stretch by Old Growth Dave called Voyager and is a stretched 16. Back in 84 the factory may have been doing much more and varied builds. There ore others on the sight who are far better historians than I am.

The boat is worth what you, (or someone else), are willing to pay. The steering is probably cable, -- fixable or replacable, and the engine, (for me) would need a through mechanic checkout, (maybe rebuild) or replace. The inside storage for the last 5 years is good, but there are a lot of years before that. I would check for any penetrations into the sole, or transom, any through hulls, for signs of dryrot, or inadequate repair, softness, blister or swelling and discoloration. If the hull is in good shape, the boats are pretty seaworthy. Good luck, and good choices.

Not so, my sleepy friend! There are 5-18 Anglers listed in the "Our C-Dorys" tab at the top and 4 Toland 18-8s.

Those are just the ones who are Brats, probably some that aren't! Although I know no one that doesn't want to be one of US!! :lol:

Thanks for the replies. I went down with the family and gave it a good look over. The hull seems pretty solid. I am a wooden boat guy but I have worked a little with GRP and epoxy. This will be my first glass boat. You are right, it is worth what someone will pay. The gentleman said he would take $6500 for it and it has a lot of accessories and nice trailer. With any luck I will be fishing by the end of next week. My daughter instantly loved the little boat and when I told her we were going to get it she had a grin from ear to ear.

All thought the boat is small I think it will serve us well for what we need it for. At 10 am tomorrow AST I will become the newest C Dory owner.

Check out what Patrick Byrd did with his 18 footer. She's a nice boat. His username is Byrdman, so you can send him a PM and he could probably tell you lots more.

You've got a great boat for halibut there in Homer.

Good luck with the cd-18. When we had a cd-16 we were being stopped all the time 'cause it was so cute.
