I need to order and replace the spark plug wires but the engine is in FL with the manuals. Just curious on how the wires are attached to the ignition coil Are they pressed into it or clamped?

Judging from this they're part of the coil itself.

I had a 1977 electric start Johnson 15 hp kicker for years. The plug wires are part of the coil set-up.

My motor shifting system got corroded and would not shift gears. The problem was up under the power head and the head need to come off. Est. $600 to repair.
Motor is gone.

Good luck with yours.

Brent,

Pete's diagram is correct. The plug wires are part of the coil assembly.

My question is, why do the plug wires need replacing? If the insulation is intact, the core is wire, and is durable. The plug connector can be replaced.

It may be possible to buy the entire coil assembly. I would check with a Evinrude dealer.

Thanks everyone and Larry

The end connector is broken and I have not familiar with replacing it so I thought it be quicker to replace the wires.

The spark plug connector consists of two parts. A coiled wire 'springy' that has a bent pointed end on the wire of the 'springy'. The other part is the rubber boot.

To replace, remove the old connector. Press the pointed end thru the plug wire at the end of the wire, 90 degrees to the axis of the wire. The pointed end of the connector needs to penetrate the insulation and go into the wire part of the plug wire. Lubricate the coil 'springy' and end of the plug wire with a drop of 2-stroke oil and slide the rubber boot onto the coil 'springy' and plug wire. The boot must be positioned so that when pressed onto the spark plug, the end of the spark plug goes into the coil.

It is actually much easier to do the operation and to understand how this goes together than it is to write about it.

By removing the old connector the arrangement of the parts and the procedure should become clear. The boot and 'springy' are available at an Evinrude dealer.

The boot and 'springy' are shown in the diagram linked in Pete's post.
