16' Angler tips/tricks welcome

We purchased a 16’ Angler in late October and I got to fish a couple of weekends on the Mississippi before freeze up.

In fact the last day was 18 degrees and snowing when I realized that the splash off the bow was freezing on the sides of the 16.

Anyway during this adventure, I realized that organization of the 16 is critical with such limited space.

So what organizational tips/tricks do other 16 owners have to offer?

Without a live well, what do others do with caught fish?

Organize gear, net, paddle, boat hook, bumpers, tackle box/s, rods etc.?

This should be interesting.

The best improvement I came up with is a storage rack in the cuddy of my 16' Angler. Check out the photo's in my album on the 1st page of the photo album. The rack allows you to store all of the miscellaneous "stuff" under it and supports fish boxes, coolers, fish kill bags, etc. on top. I just used some scrap wood for it and threw it together but it has functioned perfectly (rare for me!). Of course big halibut do present a problem!

Ahh.... they are just pulling your chain. First off, does your angler have the built in pocket in the front of the motor well? I noticed some years did not, my 89 does. Very handy. For fish storage I use fish bags, or specifically Katch koolers simply because of availibility out here. But any fish bag can be thrown in the motor well, or rolled up if not used. I also have these custom side pockets that the previous owner had made up out of plastic. I will try and take a pic and post it in the next day or so. They provide a nice area for fenders, ropes and the like and dont interfere with the drop down canvas etc... I think he said tap plastics made them for him.

Where is it you do your fishing with your 16? You have some great pics, and nice fish! I was hoping to plan some sort of a long fishing trip with the 16 for this summer or next.

That would be Winter Harbour in Quatsino Sound on Vancouver Island. I live in Mount Vernon and have been trailering the boat up there for the past 6 years with my brother as copilot. Basically you drive up Vancouver Island to Port Hardy (5 hours from ferry terminal on the island) and turn left on a 50 mile long gravel logging road (2 hours) and it's at the end of the logging road.
The docks in my photo album are the public docks at Winter Harbour. There are fully serviced camp grounds, grocery store, guides, and fuel dock located there. Great place to fish but you have to pay attention to the weather radio and fish accordingly. If you want to get some more info on the area, I believe the Salmon University website covers it pretty well.

If you decide to try it let me know and I can give you more detailed information.

15" Rubber Snubbers like truckers use to hold canvas on loads. :thup Those and some of those "screw down SS loops" like battery hold downs. Install along the sides under the gunnels and in the cabin, these can be used to hold gear in place, without creating places that collect junk. :roll:

Flush-mounted tackle boxes work great on both the 16 and 19. Don't have any pictures handy of them on my 16, but here's one from my old 19:

On the 16, we have a pair of them installed just aft of the cabin, one per side. With the seats swiveled to the rear, you can easily access them while seated.

Yes, installing them requires you lose a very minimal amount of flotation. If that bothers you, don't do it.

That is a great idea! Do you recall how much depth you had to work with on the 16? We installed an anchor locker on our 16C with deck pipe (I lost some floatation too). Has worked out very well for us. Pictures in C-Squirt album.

Quite a bit, but I don't remember the exact amount. One thing that might be an issue - I know some C-Dory models have a tube running the length of the gunnel, through which wiring and/or controls are run. This might cause clearance issues, but on our 1990 and my older 19, there are no such tubes - wires and controls were simply zip-tied together, and held up via small fasteners. There was plenty of room for this bundle behind the tackle boxes. My 22 has the tubes, but it's a moot point on that model - there's insufficient room for the hatches, given the narrower gunnels.

I just looked up my order history, and we used a pair of Tempress 11x15's in the 16. Dimensions are available at the link provided. I'm almost positive I used the same model in my 19, but can't say for certain.

Another thing to consider - as you can see from the picture posted above, I installed the hatches in close proximity to the downrigger on the 19. The primary reason for this - I wanted to install backing plates for the downrigger bases, and since I had to cut a hole in the trim below the gunnel for the hatches, that gave me access to install the plate.

On the older 16, there was no such concern - access beneath the downrigger base, was not obstructed. We found it more convenient to have the tackle boxes closer to the seats. Having then farther forward, also allows us to keep stuff in the back of the cockpit, without impeding access to the hatches, i.e. coolers, fish boxes, etc.
 
Yes, those would be perfect on my boat. I'm kicking myself for not buying a couple of those last year at the very last C-Dory Factory party. They were only $15 each. :crook
