Fuzy Dice-
What type of engine to do you have, a 2 or 4 stroke? Some of the older motors are a lot louder than the newer ones. Some make a lot of noise just through their air intakes! Unmuffled carburetors are noisy! Some of the newer motors have air silencers on the front of the fuel injection air intakes.
A lot of the sound heard is transmitted from the motor to the transom and into the hull, which then broadcasts sound all over.
At certain rpms, the boat will resonate as the sound frequency matches up with the cabin and cockpit space, and resonates the entire interior.
As far as sound control is concerned, insulation of the motor is one answer, and lining the cabin with carpet or blown on insulation is another.
One of the most effective means is to have a canvas barrier at the back of the cabin to block the sound, such as you'd have with a canvas cabin enclosure.
Another effective way is to block the noise from the motor by mounting a cooler in the engine well directly in front of the motor. Much of the sound is reflected backward and the overall level is reduced greatly.
Of course, earplugs and headphones are an inexpensive answer, but I'd still like to be able to hear any warning sounds from another boat's horn, the sound of the water on the hull, and motor noises to know everything is OK.
On the 22's and 25's, with the solid rear bulkhead and door, the sound level goes down by 2/3'rds when you close the door!
I could go on and review from my memory all the things we've discussed here before, but if you go over to the New Test Site, go to the Search Engine, and put in "Sound Insulation" first, then do a second search on "Soundproofing", you'll be directed to tons of posts on this topic. (Don't specify a particular Forum to search, let the computer choose from the list by checking the appropriate box below the list.
