15th Annual Delta/Bay Extravaganza - 2017

Dear All.

Everything is all set at the Duck Club for a grand kick-off party on Wednesday!

Kath and I will be launching about 10 AM Wednesday morning. We will leave the dock as a group at about Noon. I told John we would be at Wheeler Island about 2:30 PM. Wednesday.

I spent two weeks ago working on my outboard engine. Everything is now all set and in working order. I hope the same for you.

Looking forward to another Extravaganza.

Be Safe.

Jim & Kath

2800 miles later... Midnight Flyer is now in the water at Delta Marina, with two other boats. -C-Casa & Vega. (Wife said she saw a third boat come in, but must have gone to a regular slip...) Looking forward to the cruise!

Went over to Rio Vista yesterday to see who was there. Had a great evening catching up with Joel and Susan! Too bad we are not going on the trip.
Have fun and be safe.

Steve and Karen.

Tyboo, any chance for a photo album for this thread? Colby

Late note. Or does that just work with official gathering events? I can probably just as easy open up an embedded album in Midnight Flyer's album. Colby

First glitch of the trip. Guess the docks we use at Sausalito were damaged from the winds last night, so we are staying an extra day in Petaluma, then heading to San Francisco (back on schedule) tomorrow. This midwestern crew is still having a great time though. Besides checking out more of Petaluma, took in a movie today, The Zookeepers Wife. This has been a wild weather spring, all over the US. Only complaints so far, is the diet that has gone to hell, once again... and the vision that will stay with us of the bridge construction worker with the umbrella! LOL.

Glad you all are safe. Our winds came up from down there, and it was blowy, some gusts in the mid 50's in Puget Sound area. Lots of trees down, and traffic tie ups. We had power out today for a few minutes.

You all stay safe. Oh, BTW Co;lby, that wasn't an umbrella, it was fully deployed parachute

Just want to be the first to say, this was a great trip. Well worth the drive/tow out from Wisconsin. Jim and Kathy host a great cruise. And all others we met on the cruise and along the way had a lot of input to the outcome as well! I will probably upload some of my own personal photos to Midnight Flyers Album when I get a better internet connection, most likely when we get home. Unfortunately, no one was able to stay around for some more cruising, so our plans are to head up the Sacramento River tomorrow to overnight at Old Sacramento, before returning to pull the boat out and start home. I know there is plenty more to see in the Delta area, but I'm not much of one to explore unknown rivers on my own. Besides, Rosanne wants to see Zion and Bryce Canyons on the way home and make some more use of our National Park Pass, and leaving here a little earlier than planned will allow us time to do that. Thanks again to all the others on this cruise for making this a fun and exciting experience for us! Colby (& Rosanne)

Delta Extravaganza #15 in the books! Another great trip hosted by Jim and Kathy. We particularly enjoyed the rain for a couple of days, really makes you sleep DEEP. We always enjoy the comradery and just generally good times with good folks at these gatherings. Thanks again to John and Robin (Dinner Belle II) and Jim/Kathy for hosting the delicious meals at the Wheeler Island Duck Club...talk about busting diets, whoa.

I had a trailer incident on the way home from Rio Vista to Simi Valley (380 miles), my right rear tire decided to pick up a nail, lose air, heat up and disintegrate on the I-5 Southbound freeway. Took us about an hour to change the tire mainly due to my negligence of not making sure our Expedition's scissor jack was up to the task of lifting one end of an axle, about 2000 lbs. It wasn't. Made a pretzel out of the end of the rod that connects to the jack, nearly breaking it off. The spare tire worked fine the rest of the way home. I'm now looking into dynamic air pressure monitoring systems for the trailer and perhaps also the tow vehicle (separate thread). Plus, carrying my low profile, 12 ton bottle jack for all trips.

But the trip was worth it and we had a wonderful time!

Thanks to everyone for coming on our 15th Annual Delta and Bay Extravaganza. We are happy that everyone made the trip safely. Kath and I had another good time (rain, wind, and all) and we still look forward to our 16th event next year, health willing.

We had another good group this year and we enjoyed everyone's company. John and Robbin did another great job hosting the Wheeler Island Duck Club dinner.

Joel and Susan provided another wonderful offering by inviting us all over to their friends, Tom and Chris, in Petaluma, for an outstanding dinner and evening. Also, Joel and Susan thanks for those high intensity flash lights.

John and Laurie and Peter Hamm provided a nice event in San Francisco by taking us to the South Beach Marina Yacht Club for dinner using reciprocal Vallejo Yacht Club privileges and Peter’s connections.

We had to stay an extra night in Petaluma this year because of the rain and wind, but many of us enjoyed our outing at Volpi’s restaurant on Friday night. The weather was quite uncertain this year, but we managed to work our way to the various venues through pockets in the weather.

Steve and Alex, and David thanks for your longstanding loyalty to this event. Alex, I am really enjoying that lantern that you gave me. Floyd and Bernie, we all enjoyed your wine. Pedro and Chuck thanks for the wooden homemade wine stoppers.

Colby and Rosanne thanks for your huge effort to come one half way across the U.S. from Wisconsin. John and Laurie, we all enjoyed your gourmet beer. Kent and Marcia I am still eating your chocolate.

We are appreciative to all that put in the work to join us on this adventure. This is an event where everyone truly makes a contribution. We hope to see many of you next year at the same event!

Jim & Kath

Two days ago, Pete Hamm, while walking his dog around the neighborhood, engaged a friend in conversation... it turned out his friend is a member of the Duck Club.
I don't know the name of the person, Pete lives in Portola

It is a small world !!!

Wow, that's neat....Pete and I both live in Plumas County...we only have 11,600 in the whole county....so Pete and I must be neighbors...

As always the Extravaganza went by too fast! Bernie and I express our thanks to Pounder and Dinner Belle for the best cruise on the planet. Also to all of you who shared your comradeship, time and support through this great adventure and made all the little things come together. Lots of great memories made.

This year and being "Not the Captain", has created a huge collection of images and video to sort through, the best to date. I will be working on this for quite a while it looks like. I have made available a shared folder on my Google Drive that anyone with the link below can download or upload to. Each boat has a folder so feel free to share any images that you like share with the group and would be willing to allow me to possibly use in the video I make each year. As I go along I will be adding video clips to my folder that I think might be cool, so keep checking back to see if there is anything you can use or want to view. I have also made available all the images that Gabriella graciously provided me to share with all of you.

When my next epic Extravaganza Video is finished I will post the link on this thread.

Hoping to see all of you again in Catalina!

Steve, not sure what you started, but I picked up a screw in one of my trailer tires today, on the Loneliest highway in America! (US-50 between Reno and Ely, Nevada!) Fortunately, I caught it during a fuel top off stop in Austin, NV. Noticed my tire looking flat compared to the others, so pulled the gauge out and read 22 psi. Also fortunately, I do carry a bottle jack, and a "tire plugging" kit. Rather than bother with changing it out with the spare, I just plugged it, and everything is good again, or at least was for the last several hundred miles. Boatercamping in the Cedar City, Utah Walmart tonight. Zion and Bryce National Parks the next few days sightseeing, then onward to home. Colby

Yes, I believe I've been on that highway, at least the one from Tonopah to Ely--many times during my college years visiting my uncle near Twin Falls, ID. I don't recall spreading screws on that particular highway...:-).

You were LUCKY, very, to catch it during a stop. I had checked all my tires, rims and hubs just 10 minutes before my blow-out (or melt-down). Just goes to show that regular checking at stops isn't the end-all, active monitoring is the best. I'm reviewing the top 4 or 5 systems, some cheap, some expensive and "trying" to get the specs on each. Some sequentially display each tire (30 sec intervals), but alarm immediately if a problem. Some update every 5 minutes, which seems excessive. Some show all wheels' pressures and temperatures. Etc. Been reading on the RV forums for best, actual reviews. All say either water-proof or water-resistant, but I believe regular dunking in saltwater can't be good, so I'll be removing the sensors for each launch.

Steve, I agree with you about active monitoring. When you decide on a system, let me know which one you go with. I've looked just a bit in the past, but not seriously. Colby

Hi Floyd. I just uploaded a few photos I had of Slack Time into his google drive folder. Don't really see to many other photos, except for some in Pounder's folder. I'm assuming it's going to take you quite some time to get everything organized, but wondering if you'll let us know as photo files are uploaded? I also have quite a few photos general in nature. Ie, Not any particularly of one specific boat, but rather just shots of our cruise. Would it be worthwhile to have another folder added for those kinds of photos? Colby

Hi Colby

Thanks for sharing! My original intent was to have everyone put their own images that they would like to share in their own folder, but any way that you want to do it is fine.

I would just check back every once in awhile and check out the activity log to see if anyone has uploaded. So far, just you and Pounder have contributed images.

Right now i am working on processing and when I am ready to finalize my video I will post and see if there is any last minute additions.

Here is the link again for anyone that needs it. It will allow you to view and also upload to the drive

Great shots btw!
Also I created a Video Clip folder, the first one is your boat leaving South Harbor, check it out. I will try to get a clip for everyone
