15th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure

Sorry to hear that Joel is having health issues and won't be able to make the Catalina Island trip. We hope he has a speedy recovery. We've been on trips with Joel to Catalina Island, Lake Powell and the Sacramento River Delta Trip.

We've decided to take Bob Austin's suggestion and launch at Sunset Aquatic Marina for the Catalina Island Trip. We have a reservation for a guest slip ($25) the night of July 31. It appears there is a good boat ramp and trailer wash-down facility. Parking is $12/day. There is an Orange County Harbor Patrol building adjacent to the parking lot so we hope the parking is secure.

This may not appeal to folks coming from the north as it is a longer drive for them than to other options such as Marina Del Ray, but, as we're coming from Phoenix, we hope it is a easier drive. Also, it looks like the trip to the island is a shorter distance than other launch points.

Joel and Susan.

So sorry to hear of Joel’s back problems. Kath and I wish Joel a speedy recovery.

You both will be dearly missed at Catalina as I think that you have never ever missed that venue.

We were glad to see you both earlier at the Delta and Bay Extravaganza.

Jim & Kath

Dear All.

As of today we have the following six (6) vessel attendees for the 15th Annual Catalina Off-shore Adventure:

1. Pounder, (Jim & Kath)
2. Dinner Belle II, (John & Robbin)
3. Dora-Jean, (Steve, et. al)
4. Far C’r, (Floyd and Eiko)
5. C-View II, (Tony & Diane)
6. Sealife, (Mike & dog)

If you are on the above list, and you are not coming, please let us know. If you are not on the above list, and you are coming, please say so.

We have had inquiries from Lighthouse Express (Heinz and Diane), Midnight Flyer (Colby), and C-Byrd (Patrick). Will any of you come?

Others are welcome to attend, just please indicate your intent.

Jim & Kath

Dear All.

Right now we have about six boats attending the 2016 Catalina Off-shore Adventure. Some of the boats may be there part of the time, and some of the boats will be there all of the time. We thus have approximately 12, or more, attendees.

This year, like the last two years, we are having a more informal kickoff on Sunday, July 31st. In the past most everyone has met at Marina Del Ray (MDR) on Sunday for a get together before we all go over on Monday morning. This year, like last year, some attendees are leaving at different times and locations, but most everyone will be together on Monday, August 1st at Two Harbors.

Kath and I will arrive in MDR Sunday late afternoon with the John and Robbin. We will then go over to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 1st.

For those that plan to meet at MDR on Sunday, late afternoon, July 31st, please indicate so. Any of those in this group, who want to, can go out to dinner together on Sunday night at MDR.

Pounder and Dinner Belle II will proceed to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 1st, leaving MDR at approximately 7:00 AM. When we get to Two Harbors we will obtain shore side “string line” reservations (on the left hand side of the fuel dock facing the shore), and together.

We will coordinate this reservation on the way over via communication on VHF Channel 69. (You will all be happy to know that I got a new radio that hopefully will not be cutting out!). We will contact Harbor Patrol on VHF Channel 9 when we get to Two Harbors.

Many of us will return from Two Harbors on early Saturday morning, August 6th. Again, we will leave Two Harbors at approximately 7:00 AM on that Saturday.

On Monday night, August 1st, we will have group pot luck on the beach. Each boat should plan on bringing a dish to share with the group. Everyone is to bring their own drinks to the beach party Monday.

During the week of August 1st for our activities we may have a fishing trip (and an associated fish fry), a sightseeing trip to Avalon, a scuba diving or snorkeling trip, a kayak excursion along the shore, hikes around the Island, and/ or a bicycle trip around Two Harbors. On Friday night, August 5th, for those that want to, we usually have a group dinner together at the Harbor Reef Restaurant.

For many aging C-Dory folks, it will be sufficient to just relax on their boats. This activity includes watching the sun rise, and set, and enjoying the near perfect 75-degree weather in flip-flops, shorts, and t-shirts.

Some folks eat breakfast over at the Galley Grill in the morning, and most eat light lunches and dinners on their own boats. Often times there will be mid-afternoon drinks over at the Harbor Reef Saloon or the Banning House Lodge. Some folks often host a happy hour during the week on their boats. There is a good grocery store at Two Harbors where one can buy most anything needed and replenish ice every few days.

Be sure to bring a good functioning tender to this event, as a big part of this venue is getting to, and from, the dingy dock, and cruising around to all the other boats and visiting. A functioning small outboard on the tender really helps. Also, bring quarters for the pay showers, another key ingredient to happy Island life!

Regarding food assignments for our Monday night pot luck BBQ on the beach we need volunteers for the following dishes:

A. Steaks to BBQ – Jim and Kath
B. Cheese, chips, and dip, etc. for pre-dinner snacks – need volunteer
C. Potato or macaroni pasta salad – need volunteer
D. Green salad and dressing – John and Robbin
E. Garlic bread and corn and butter and aluminum foil – need volunteer
F. Dessert (ice cream from the store) and cookies – need volunteer.

We have at least 6 vessels on this journey. There are at least six (6) opportunities to volunteer for a food assignment above. For any other vessel(s), please make your own suggested food contributions. Please sign up now for your potluck assignment!

If anyone needs to check in regarding logistics on this trip they may call me on my cell telephone, (916) 799-0286.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at this historic long-held event.

Jim & Kath

Jim,

Thanks for the trip planning info.

We will volunteer to supply Item B - Cheese, chips, dip, etc. for pre dinner snacks.

Tony & Diane

Jim,
There is a possibility that we may bring Todd's "new" 25 Cruise Ship for a day or two, depending on how the "outfitting" goes. Don't count on us--If we are able to come, we will give you a shout on the phone.

Dr. Bob.

That would be great if you could make it over to Two Harbors on your son-in-laws boat. We recognize the uncertainty.

The best to you and Marie.

For those who have not heard about my father, please read this, and post on that thread, should you wish, not here. You must be signed in to see it.

Joel and Susan.

Wishing Joel a successful procedure and a rapid recovery. Hope to see you soon. If you would like to come over to visit everyone just for a day, I could pick you up in the morning, then drop you off later. Please let me know.

David

What a grand friend....Thanks David but I think I am looking at a fairly long recovery, physical therapy starts two weeks after surgery. So we are somewhat stuck in Reno for a while. Riding in the car is my least favorite activity, right now, but we look forward to Catalina next year! Your kindness is appreciated.

Yep, still going. Might be a shortened trip or full length, still unsure at this time, but Monday-Wednesday for sure.

I can supply the dessert for Monday's potluck.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone and having a relaxing week at Two Harbors.

Jim & Kath

Thanks to Jim and Kath of Pounder for organizing the 2016 trip to Catalina Island. The cool weather was a welcome break from the Phoenix heat. We enjoyed renewing our friendships with the other participants.

We arrived safely home to Phoenix despite LA's nasty traffic and the 113 degrees F temperatures we saw on the way.

Thanks to all of you for making this adventure a great experience.

* What we enjoyed most is the great company
* What we enjoyed second is the cruising and fishing excursions

Even though we lost a trailer brace bolt on the way home from driving over many pot holes in the LA area, we made it home OK.

As always, Jim & Kathy did a fabulous job on organizing this trip.

We are already looking forward to next years event...

Thank you very much,
Heinz & Diane
