12th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure for 2013

Wow.

This is fantastic. We now have eight vessels going to Two Harbors, and I suspect we will get a few more old timers, and maybe another new timer or so. The 8 C-Dorys going so far are as follows:

1. Pounder - Jim and Kath
2. Islander - Ron
3. Dinner Belle II - John and Robbin
4. Sealife - Mike, Muffin, and Company
5. Dora Jean - Steve and Company
6. SEA3PO - Joel and Susan
7. Blue Eagle - David and Donald
8. C-Casa - Pedro.

Pedro, way to go about getting onboard. We need a few new guys!

Shortly I will post some more details about our trip schedule, our potluck, activities, and our going to/away dinners.

Mike, Pounder and Dinner Belle II will be leaving from MDR for sure. I think Islander also may have said that he will leave from MDR. I don't know about the others yet but we will find out from everyone where they are leaving from as we get closer to the event.

More later.

Dear All Islanders:

Many of us plan to meet at Marina Del Ray (MDR) on Sunday, late afternoon, August 4th. We will stay at MDR on Sunday evening at the guest docks and we will leave our trailers and trucks in the MDR parking lot. Those in the group, who want to, usually go out to dinner together on Sunday night and we sometimes take the MDR ferry to a restaurant nearby.

Please indicate if you are starting at MDR on Sunday, or if you are going directly over to Two Harbors on your own, and when. John Eudy and myself are starting at MDR.

Many of us will proceed to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 5th, leaving MDR at approximately 7:00 AM. We usually go as a group the approximately 26 off-shore miles to Two Harbors, Catalina Island. When we get to Two Harbors we will obtain “string line” reservations close to shore, and together. We will coordinate this reservation on the way over via communication on VHF Channel 69.

Most of us will return from Two Harbors on early Saturday morning, August 10th. Again, we will leave Two Harbors at approximately 7:00 AM on Saturday.

On Monday night, August 5th, we will have group pot luck on the beach. Each boat should plan on bringing a dish to share with the group. Everyone is to bring their own drinks to the beach party Monday. At our next posting we will talk more about pot luck sign ups and specifics, after we get a firmer idea of who is actually still coming. As a heads up, Kathy and I are happy to bring the meat for a BBQ.

During the week of August 5th for some of our activities we may have a fishing trip over to Santa Barbara Island (and an associated victory fish fry), a day sightseeing trip to Avalon, a scuba diving trip, a kayak excursion along the shore, several inland hikes around the Island, and a bicycle trip around Two Harbors. On Friday night, August 9th, for those that want to, we usually have a group dinner together at the Harbor Reef Restaurant.

For many C-Dory folks, it will be sufficient to just relax on their boats. This activity includes watching the sun rise, and set, and enjoying the perfect 75 degree weather in flip-flops, shorts, and t-shirts.

Many folks eat hearty breakfasts over at the Galley Grill in the morning, and most eat light lunches and dinners on their own boats. Often times there will be mid-afternoon drinks over at the Harbor Saloon or the Banning House Lodge. Some folks often host a happy hour during the week on their boats. There is a great grocery store at Two Harbors where one can buy most anything needed and replenish your ice every few days.

Be sure to bring a good functioning tender to this event, as a big part of this venue is getting to, and from, the dingy dock, and cruising around to all the other boats and visiting. A functioning small outboard on the tender really helps. Also, bring quarters for the pay showers, another key to happy Island life!

More later,
Jim and Kath

PS- What happed to Keith on C-Pup? He should have signed up!

Great to hear about all of the C-Dorys headed over to Two Harbors in August. I am not sure about my availability that week, but if I am available I will stop by and would love to meet other C-Brats

I am slipped in Huntington Harbor and head over to Catalina nearly every weekend. Actually, there are only two c-dorys in Huntington Harbor and we are slipped right next to each other on J-Dock. It is a pretty cool site to see.

I am headed over again this afternoon through the weekend. If anyone is around let me know. Also, if folks are going to do some fishing, I have some GPS numbers that I would be happy to share. There are plenty of small rock piles that hold rockfish in and around the West End of the island. Also, this has been one of the best fishing years for White Sea Bass and Yellowtail. If you have a chance to buy or make live squid, that is the ticket. It is pretty easy to float squid inside of Eagle Reef, between Lion Head in about 80-100' of water. It can easily dry up prior to August, but if you can get live squid, don't pass it up.

Tim

Thanks for all the fishing tips! We really need them.

Now that they have all the marine sanctuary zones over there it is a lot more complex and challenging. I would be interested in any gps points you could provide for rock fishing that are still legal.

Sincerely,
Jim

Tim:

Thank you so much. I needed this information to get oriented in the new more regulated Catalina fishing environment. Hope to meet you sometime in Two Harbors!

Jim

Decision made: we will cruise to MDR and go over with the fleet on Monday morning.

Now, let me answer a couple of questions posed in this thread:

A. No, I'm not bringing Ed.......I'm bringing Paul.

B. This may not be the last time you can see Sealife again! There is still some life left in these old bones.

My friend Paul Fielding is coming with me on this trip. He is one of my regular crew members on my CGAUX patrols, a retired fire fighter, and still qualified EMT (Emergency Medical Tech), so he brings an extra level of security to our gathering.

Have we heard from C-Pup? And how about what's her name? Will I be grossly out of order if I bring the old C-DOG banner?

Phil and Mike

Phil, thanks for the good information. I am going to try to get a copy of that guide over at Parks and Recreation here in Sacramento. The new preserves very confusing to me and they discourage me trying to figure out the fishing over there, but I guess that I need to really try to figure it out.

Mike, it is great that you will be joining us on the way over. Also great to hear that there is life in your bones! Also, yes, bring the banner. I like the Dog theme.

I am gone today for two weeks in the European Alps and the Italian Dolomites (by motorcycle!). Hope I make it back for Catalina!

I am the individual that Mike on SeaLife took for the demo ride, and am seriously considering buying a 22 C-Dory Cruiser for these exact types of activities. My primary planned uses are fishing and overnighting in these same waters.

I have been boating in my 17' Boston Whaler Montauk in these same waters for the past 10 years, and am looking to upgrade to a Pilothouse boat.

I would enjoy taking a demo ride to Catalina Island with someone - only if I can help out with expenses, and if you have room for an extra experienced hand.

I can stay on the island, and would really like to go on the fishing trip from Catalina to Santa Barbara Island. Same offer: only if you have room, and only if I can help out with expenses.

If there are any takers, I can be contacted either on or off list.

All the best,
Gratitude (Jim)

Ron,

Would be delighted to cruise with you to MDR. Perhaps first timer Pedro (c-casa) would like to join us also. Saw his 1989 Cruiser at the Landing and it looks brand new.

And yes, I did mean Wendy. As I recall, though, we usually ran into her later in August. Really hope we do see her.

Lets touch base a little closer and coordinate a departure time.

Please add me to the list. My name is Kelly Larson I'm a newer C-brat. I'll be with my Labrador at MDR on Sunday evening. (My wife isn't interested in going). First time in coastal waters for me and the CD-22. Really looking forward to it. Thanks!

Wow David and Donald! You two have considerably expanded the concept of the Catalina Offshore Adventure to the California Offshore Adventure. This must be your forth or fifth time going without a trailer!

Jim

Please add Tony and Diane on C-View (formerly named Islander) to the list of attendees.

We plan to drive from Phoenix to MDR on Sunday August 4. We'll go over with the group on that Monday morning. We may spend some time in Avalon. We may make the return trip on Friday rather than Saturday.

Diane is planning to bring a pasta salad to the potluck if that is OK.

Can't wait to escape the Phoenix heat!

Tony
