12th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure for 2013

Jim,

Per your request, I am letting you know that we will meet you at MDR on Sunday and follow you guys to Catalina on Monday morning.

Our first time to Catalina...

Thanks

Heinz & Diane

Hi Fellow Brats, :cry

The MARCIA JANE has missed last years Catalina event, the 2013 Delta Extravaganza and now our favorite destination - Two Harbors on Catalina Island! Two back operations and a Staph infection have knocked me down and our poor boat has not seen any water for over a year!

I'm on the mend now and hope to be back next boating season - good Lord a willin! :rainbow

Marcia and I both want to wish the whole group calm seas, good fishing and great fun this next week!

Wow Kent, double whammy, health issues and a dry boat, so sorry. Here's wishing you a full recovery and back to normal in the boating dept--maybe even double your trips per year for awhile to make up for lost time. :thup And please say hi to Marcia for me!

I know I've been boating only about 1/2 as much due to so many commitments and other necessities of life in the last few years, but have longer-range plans to get back to normal as well.

Heinz and Diane.

Very smart to go over with the group on Monday morning! Especially for your first time.

John (Dinner Belle II), Bobby (Cora J), and me and Kath (Pounder) will be pulling into MDR mid-afternoon on Sunday. By the time we get launched and set up with our tenders, we will be ready to go to a group dinner about 6:00 PM or 7:00 PM.

We will leave for Two Harbors about 7:00 AM Monday morning for those who are going with the group.

Bon Voyage!

Jim and Kath

Here is the final list of attendees for the 2013 Catalina Off-shore Adventure:

1. Jim & Kath (Pounder) Northern California
2. John & Robbin (Dinner Belle II) Northern California
3. Ron (Islander) Southern California
4. Heinz & Diane (Lighthouse Express) Northern California
5. Joel & Susan (SEA3PO) Southern California
6. Tony & Diane (C-View) Arizona
7. Kelly & dog Dori (LabraDory) Arizona
8. Steve (Dora-Jean) Southern California
9. Mike & Paul (Sealife) Southern California
10. David & Donald (Blue Eagle) Northern California
11. Pedro & Eileen (C-Casa) Southern California
12. Bobby & Chris (Cora-J) Northern California.

We thus have twelve (12) vessels in total and anywhere from 21 to approximately 25 folks in total. Five of the vessels are from Southern California, five of the vessels are from Northern California, and two of the vessels are from Arizona!

Out of the twelve vessels, seven are man/women couples, and five of the vessels are mixed company. One vessel is dominated by a dog! There you go, this is our joyous demographics.

Looking forward to seeing everyone Sunday for dinner in MDR for our kickoff dinner or at our Monday beach potluck in Two Harbors.

Jim & Kath

because its been a long time since we have been to MDR, and it must have changed a bit, is there an address for the ramp? to program into the GPS? we can get off the 405.....thanks, Susan

A live update from the island.
Our family has been here since Wednesday, so we are going to miss the C-brat crew. The weather has been overcast in the morning, but it has burned off by noon most days. We spent the last few nights in Cat harbor and little harbor, which is well worth the trip.

Big fishing tip...
Today I caught a 30+ lb yellowtail. Don't leave home without sardine pattern Rapala xrap-30. We caught a ton of fish trolling the west end on these, capped off by a monster yellowtail this morning. We trolled everything in the box, but they would only eat the Sardine Rapala. Try the area east of Eagle Rock on the backside. These things are big and mean, so bring your 40lb line.

Good luck!

My intention is to not hijack this thread. I am seriously considering the purchase of a 22' Cruiser to utilize in these same offshore islands, and overnighting on the hook.

For those going over and back to Santa Barbara Island I am particularly interested in whether you have a single or twin engines an why, how your boat handles going to Santa Barbara Island and back, and how you have the boat trimmed?

Have a safe and enjoyable trip!

All the best,
Jim

Where would you be going from? It is 38 miles from the nearest harbor. I usually went from Catalina. The twins vs single and kicker is covered frequently on these boards. Not a lot a Santa Barbara. Look out for the nesting birds on the Island-wear a hat and carry a piece of sage brush over your head to protect it. There are seals sea lions and elephant seals on the North side of the Island. The anchorage at the light house and trail is deep and limited--not always calm.

Fishing is limited in protected areas near the Island. I used to swim with the sea lions--not sure that is allowed any more--or wise now that I think about it. Never had any problem.

Kelly:

Thanks for the fantastic video. I liked hearing Pounder over the VHF radio! The dog pictures also were great.

Kath and I enjoyed meeting you and we are glad you could come!

Another one in the books Jim and Kathy, had a great time, no, fantastic time! Wonderful seeing old friends again and meeting new ones. I think Christopher, my 1st mate on this trip, has recalled every single minute of the 4 days we were there, almost like a blink of the eye in time.

I will post a couple of pics.

Thanks again and looking for to next year.
