Winter storm warning is cancelled.
The NWS in seattle has cancelled the winter storm warning.
A change in the track of the incoming storm system has eliminated the threat of snow in the puget sound lowlands through tonight. An inch or two of slushy snow is still possible on the highest hilltops late tonight, but the threat of disruptive widespread snow is no longer there.

No snow, but we have winds. Gusting to over 35 right now. High tide of over 14 feet in three hours, with the barometric pressure dropping fast. Got to go check on the boat and boat house. May be interesting. I would rather have snow! :tux

Was in the area today and thought I would check out the dock at Ivar's. The wind was out of the SE and waves were breaking over the dock. It may be prudent to move the gathering back to Chinook's or maybe the pub in Snoqualmie.

I launched Two Lucky Fish today, and ran over to Ivar's to check out the dock, and it was definitely "dead downwind", even though the wind wasn't blowing too much at that point. By the time the blow really hit, I was tied up in my new slip, so I didn't see what it looked like later.

Still, the Saturday forecast is for a northerly, in which case Ivar's would be in the lee of the land, with no fetch to build up waves. Might be the best place to tie up!

We'll make that call in the AM depending on wind direction. Since I haven't made reservations at either, we can go to Chinooks if the dock at Ivars is not suitable. However, the wind is predicted to be a modest 10-15kts from the N at that time so I'm not too worried about that.

I am however still worried about snow. I live on a steep hill and I'm not going to get the boat up (and down safely) if there's snow on the hill. I'll be up at about 5AM to check conditions. IF there's snow, I'll post my go/no go decision at 6AM. If it doesn't look suitable for towing but is still OK for driving in a car, we could still meet for lunch at Ivars or Chinooks. Anyone who wants my mobile number please send me a PM.

Well..... While the weather is not the "good weather" I promised initially, it's better than was forecast earlier in the week. Up here in Kenmore at 5:30 AM we have light winds (almost nothing) and the Wa State ferry weather is showing 5-7 kts in the sound. There's no snow on the ground here but there is some predicted for mid-late afternoon - predicted to be <1" of slushy snow. So for me, the day is still a go. I do however want to end the trip a bit earlier than usual so I can be sure to get home and back up the hill w/o problems. Those who show up, we can coordinate on the radio, I'll monitor 16, 68 and 69.

I've got the boat hooked up and I'm going to launch on Lake Union (assuming there is parking there). That will allow me to make quicker exit after lunch. I have a 12 pack of coke (in case Tom is the winner) and a nice bottle of wine (in case someone else is the winner).

I think we'll do Ivars for lunch. See you guys there!

Roger, We'll be there without R-Matey. Driving down from Bellingham in the 4x4 pickup as it looks like we could have snow on the way home. The old van is not that good at staying on the road if it should become slick or icy. If there's a change in the destination for CBGT lunch, please give us a call on the cell phone (number being sent via PM). Thanks for doing this.

Well thanks to Tim on Two Lucky Fish and his nice shiny new AISB transponder WE KNOW WHERE YOU ARE !!!!

http://ais3.siitech.net/VTSLite/AView.aspx

http://www.marinetraffic.com/ais/defaul ... level0=100

Both of the above sites were showing Tim until he got near Ballard Locks at 6,8 Kts so I can only assume he was sunk by Homeland security at that point.
Tim, I have sent you a PM with a number of screen shots of your adventures. They answer your question as to whether or not you are "visible" to "the system" (particularly since one site is Greek !!)

Now you will definitely have to use the porta-potty 'cos Bog Brother is watching you!!

Cheers,

Merv

Yeah, Julia was asking about the speed limits on the lakes and ship canals, and I told her we would observe them strictly, since with AIS we're CONSTANTLY BROADCASTING OUR SPEED! :-)

It's Big Brother's dream, for sure.

Well, it was another good event and forecast be damned the weather this year was better than last year. In attendance by boat:

Two Lucky Fish - Tim Flan, wife and two girls
C-Daisy - Karl and his two girls
Susan E - Tom and Susan
Sea DNA - myself and Joyce

By land:
R-Matey - Ruth and Joe
Sensei - Roger and Lisbeth
Dreamer - Pat and Patty
Anita Marie - Fred

Tim gave us a nice talking tour of Lake Union and we wandered on down to the locks and backed. We all met at Ivars on Lake Union for lunch. We had a table for 18 and good conversation was had by all. I'll PM Tyboo and Bill to ask for a photo album.

I think I revealed during the tour that I'm sort of a tugboat nut. Anyway, here are the links to the websites for the tugboat companies we saw today, in ascending order from smallest to biggest:

Campbell Maritime. Brian Campbell blogs about his almost-daily adventures aboard tugs Ruby VII, Driftwood, and Bandit.

Fremont Tugboat Co.. Still a small company, but with more and larger boats than Campbell. Mark Freeman is the son of ol' Doc Freeman (a name which may be familiar to Puget Sound boaters; Doc Freeman's was THE go-to chandlery for years and years), and his office is practically a museum of nautical photographs, paintings, boat models, and artifacts. Here's a quick profile on Mark Freeman written by C-Brat Dan Richman.

Western Towboat Company. This is a pretty big company, and you'll spot their distinctive blue/yellow/white tugs running barges up and down Puget Sound, or to and from Alaska!

Foss Maritime. If you don't know these guys, you haven't been paying attention. They're like a maritime Boeing or Starbucks or Microsoft; a local company gone global.

Hi All,

The girls and I had a great time today. It was nice to see and meet you all. Thanks to Roger and Tim for the guided tour of Lake Union. See you at the next one.

Karl
