100W solar panel

As far as I know a charge controller is pretty much a necessity regardless of panel wattage, to prevent overcharging or reversing the flow and draining one's batteries.

If the charger is below a level that won't easily over charge the battery (or batteries), a controller would not be necessary, as say in a 5- 25 watt charger, depending on the batteries used.

Dr Bob (Thataway) wrote me once:

"If the panels output is more than 4 amps (or 50 watts in 12 volts) you definitely need a controller. Most trickle charges are 5 to 10 watts, larger boats and RV's use up to 50 watts for large battery banks. I have used a 10 watt solar panels on both an RV and the C Dory 22 and 25 to keep the batteries topped off when in NV or CA. storage."

The solar panels are solid state devices that charge only, moving electrons only in one direction efficiently, and may contain also have diodes that allow current to flow only in one direction.

I have that exact panel on my camper back, attached to trailing edge of roof. Wired up to genasun mppt charge controller, works great so far, batteries always topped off.
