09/24 - 10/02 - Lake Powell 2010

Jody (jkidd),

I remember live bait is not legal there. I think we can use scented lures though, right? There's another thread going (http://www.c-brats.com/viewtopic.php?t=14348&highlight=) regarding that topic and I'd like to try it here on the ocean in SoCal, but maybe at Lake Powell, too.

I figure it applies to a lot of people on this thread so I thought I'd ask the specific lake question here. I'm thinking of little pads of cloth soaked in Herring Oil or something.

Brent...the Escalante would be a good bet on Sunday-Monday...you know the usual spots. And with that fast boat of yours...you can check them all in what....20-30 minutes?

Steve...don't recognize Discovery Canyon...I think you're referring to the island at the mouth of Explorer Canyon...just above Three Roof Ruins. We might be there...depending on water level or previous occupancy...or maybe in Fiftymile on a sandbar or at the top...or Willow Creek..or?

Chris, you're correct. I was thinking Explorer and typing Discovery. I like it there if there is not too many others. Last year we had it to ourselves for a night. The hike into Discovery for the rock art is interesting, too.

Roger...the sandbar you remember is gone...under water. We have to go much further upstream to find sand at current water levels.

Chris,

We will try to make it to Oak Canyon if the jet lag isn't too bad. The shore opposite Explorer Canyon is a good bet for an Escalante night or two. I don't think there will be a big enough beach anywhere in Fifty Mile Canyon, at the present water level.

I have some. I will send a pm to everyone for a email and cell number tonight compile a list and send it to the group email. I had only 3 replies before. I will send everyone the group email in the pm.

I've signed up for the Lake Powell trip, but we should be classified as 'tentative'. Our granddaughter is in the hospital and, depending, on how things develop, we may or may not be able to make the trip. I hope we can make it as it has been a few years since we've been to Powell.

There was an article in the Phoenix paper this morning about an event named 'Palooza On Powell' scheduled for Sept 23 -26 at various venues around the lake. It is a music festival with hot air balloons, poker runs, golf tournament, etc. 'Each day, two houseboats will travel to the lake's beaches with bands on board, which will play for those on the beach.' Sounds like 'Spring Break' in the fall. I believe most events will be at or near Wahweap Marina, Antelope Marina and in Page. It is a big lake, so once launched and up the lake a ways, it should be more peaceful. But there may be some congestion for those launching at Wahweap.

Information on the event can be found at http://www.powellapalooza.com/ .

PS: As a old intel officer, maybe I'll try to find their G2 location(s); and we can be elswhere.

From the looks of the website, you won't have to find them. You'll be able to hear them a LONG way off. Just run (don't idle), the other way....

Crapola! One more reason to launch at Bullfrog! Any C-Brat Seals who are into boring holes in the hulls of houseboats? (Government spies - this is a JOKE...)

Seriously, this is not a welcome development...

Don't know if they were headed to Powell but about 6PM passed an Oregon plated Cape Cruiser with two kayaks on top on I 15 just north of Las Vegas. Gave them a thumbs up as I made the exit to the 215 Beltway.

I was in my white BMW Z4 with F4FXR USMC veteran license plate. I made a round trip to Ely today so wasn't in the mood to follow and find a spot to chat.

Hi Bill, that is George and Jan Roach (Sea Quest) from Baker City. Yes, they are going to be at Powell. They are in LV right now, so I think a PM would get their attention if you wanted to talk boats. I am leaving for Powell on Monday, launching at Page probably on Wednesday.

I like the F4Fxr plates!!!! The airplane drivers should have F4Bkr plates!!!

Kind Regards,

Steve

Thanks.

I was supposed to overnight in Ely and return today but our phone/computer systems crashed and I need to open the office today for the techs--6 visits in last two months!

I leave tomorrow at 7:30 to go to Washington DC to see our new grandson born on 9/9 my wife's 60th birthday, take some bankers to visit Congress next week and host a 90th birthday party for my mother next Saturday so not sure if there is time today to play boats.

I will send a PM though.

I found the concert news to be very scary and I was thinking about trying to show up by Thursday morning and get out of the Wahweap area then. I also considered going way north and around to Bullfrog, but coming from SoCal that's a lot further, although I'd see some new territory. Not sure where to stock up on groceries and fishing license, etc going that route.

Further study of the concert website is looking to me like the activities are almost all in town and at Antelope Marina and that area. Wahweap appears to be a sideline, probably just trying to cash in some on the activity. Hopefully it will be only minimally screwed up by this disaster.

I just called the Chamber of Commerce in Page and the lady confirmed what I'm thinking about Wahweap. She said it should be pretty much a normal weekend there, with the concert activity in town and at Antelope.

Whew...!

While researching all this I found out there's an Antique Tractor and Machinery event the same weekend and it's just down the road from the main concert venue. That's quite a contrast in crowds, located close together. Could be a mistake, no? Also, there's a Wings, Wheels and Hot Air event at the Page airport on Oct. 2 from 10-4.

Now we know everything.

I don't think the concert thing is anything to worry about. It is obviously concentrated in town with some on the water activity at Antelope Marina and around Antelope Island. With Castle Rock Cut open we don't need to go anywhere near the "festivities". I don't think we will even know it is happening...even at the Wahweap launch.
