Halcyon is in storage there now and we'll be on the lake this spring for a week or so before setting out for more extensive cruising - still enjoying thinking about all the options. Chris is mighty busy now with pumps and pipes after all the rain in San Diego. He will probably be guide for another of his great Fall trips to the lake.
 
Is Halcyon in indoor storage? If so, how much per month? We are thinking of keeping our boat in Page or Bullfrog/Lees Crossing for the summer and have wondered about the cost.
 
It really is worthwhile to try to be there some time at least partially overlapping the dates Chris will announce, when he is able to. You should definitely tour with Chris your first time on Powell, you will see all the "must see" sites. And if you can go with Bill, you will learn more about the geology of Powell, which is absolutely fascinating.

We may not all cruise together in a big group, in fact didn't last year and almost surely won't again this year, but you do not want to miss at least one of the two rendevous! (Yes, folks, I Googled it, and the plural of "rendevous" is..."rendevous"). I am thinking we will be there the weeks of September 20 and 27, we would take off Friday September 17 and be back at the salt mines Monday October 4th. We will probably launch at Bullfrog again this year too.

A hint - if you are 60 or older, get your $10 lifetime Geezer Pass, it will save you a few bucks on entry to Glen Canyon National Recreation Area and any other national recreation area. We got ours at the local Forest Service Ranger Station, I think you can get it at the gate at Powell, but I am not sure.

Yes, you can get it at the gate to the park. I did, I mean my friend did.

I suspect 'Discovery' will get to Lake Powell both in April/May and again in Sept/Oct. We are planning for a summer cruise, June/July/August probably in BC. Maybe start in Barkley Sound and end up the Broughtons.

September is our favorite time for Yellowstone, but would like to make another Gathering at Lake Powell, so maybe this year we will. July and early August hope to be exploring Prince William Sound then maybe another section of the Yukon River between Carmacks and Dawson along with a few more lakes in the Yukon we haven't been on yet in late August

Let's set the rendevous for Saturday, September 25, in Oak Canyon. I will launch on Friday the 24th at Wahweap and head up river with any other boats that want to come along. Maybe overnight somewhere on the way and plan on Oak Canyon Saturday. Then on up river hitting the must see spots. I don't think I will set a second rendevous on the north end this year...made for a bit of a lengthy run one day last year. I plan on pulling out on 1 or 2 October.
We may want to rendevous in a different canyon if the water is way up this year. Oak Canyon has been a wonderful spot for rendevous the last number of years...but at higher water levels it is not ideal. Most of the beach in there will disappear when the water comes up. I think it will be OK this year...but water levels are trending up. We will be able to tell when we see the mid summer water levels and will make a determination then.
 
I'm putting those dates (September 24-Oct 2) on my calendar. We plan to spend the summer touring and fishing in our own waters so a fall trip trailering to Lake Powell will be a new kind of adventure for us. We just traded out truck in for the larger Tundra...so we are ready to hit the road when the time comes.
 
OK, for anybody going about the same time we are or who can join us somewhere along the way, our itinerary.

Night 1, Friday, September 17 - Camp Walmart, Yakima, WA (we just leave after work to get a leg up on the trip)
Night 2, Saturday, September 18 - Camp Walmart, Jerome, ID
Night 3, Sunday. September 19 - Camp Walmart, Springville, UT

At Bullfrog before noon on Monday, September 20!

P.S. It would be good if you are skilled at bearings and hubs if you caravan with us!
 
Leroy and I have never been to Lake Powell, so we are open to suggestions. We may link up and caravan with you, Crabbylou....subject to how our own plan and timeline comes together.

It looks like there is a savings of 100 Miles or so, for us to launch at Bullfrog rather than at Wahweap. Does anyone have any upside/downside...reasons why one is a better option than the other. We will be driving from Victoria and it looks like it is 1200-1400 miles...yes miles...not kilometers...haha...

I'm certainly all up for Wallmart camping...

If you launch at Wahweap, you will be at the south end of the lake, and everything you want to see is to the north (duh). If you launch at Bullfrog, you will be quite a ways up lake. Most of the interesting sites are between Wahweap and Bullfrog. From Bullfrog, the one "must see" site to the north is Defiance House in Forgotten Canyon, most everything else interesting is to the south (others can correct me here, of course, on this impression). So from a sight seeing perspective, it seems like it is six of one, half a dozen of the other. Start north and head south (and go to Forgotten Canyon either first or last), or start in the south and head north, hopefully making it to Forgotten Canyon. Maybe there is really interesting stuff north of Forgotten Canyon that somebody else will know about, but we don't. For sure, buy your Stan Jones Map online right now. This is just the essential guide. The other thing you probably want is a GPS chip for the lake (my Navonics chip for the C80 is all the western lakes) so you will be able to know where the middle of the river channel actually is.

Walmart camping is awesome, the security guy in Yakima remembered us and our "boaterhome" in 2009 from our 2008 visit. The Yakima, Jerome, Richfield, Price and Springville Walmarts (have stayed in all of them coming or going over the two years) are friendly. The Walmart in Nampa is not, too far off the beaten path, not RV or boaterhome friendly. Stick to the ones along the major freeways, and all is good.
