09/21 Lake Powell September 2013 Gathering

Hi Brats!

Great news! 89T is a very nice road and the speed limit is either 45 or 55, depending on your location. In fact, it is better than 89 in many places.

Marcia and I are in Wahweap Campground where we will organize and provision and launch in the morning. We have reservations at the marina for tomorrow night and plan on joining the flotilla on Friday.

If anyone else gets in early, look us up!

I've got a buddy with me and we are in northern Utah and steaming south (will resume in the morning anyway). Not sure if we will meet up with the group for the Friday noon departure or not, but aiming to be at Oak Canyon either way.

Looking forward to it!

Long driving day yesterday (~800 mi). About 350 to go this morning. After swinging in to Page for a boat fuel fill, I hope to be at Wahweap mid-afternoon.

Maybe we should be looking for you on the road? Sounds like we are just behind you! We had a long day yesterday too -around 650 miles :smilep - from about Hood River to where we are now, 60 miles north of Salt Lake.

Plan to make a stop in Salt Lake and then head to Wahweap.

Just pulled in to a site at Wahweap. Ahhhh.... not driving :D

"Color Country" was gorgeously pink/peach/terra cotta around sunset, and then a huge white moon rose up from behind a butte just as we headed east from Kanab. Almost like driving in daylight!

Woke up in the campground this morning. There is something about the light here that is so nice. I'm no morning person, but a Powell morning is almost bearable  Chris and Terry (sp?) of "Rana Verde" pulled through our campground loop around 10 a.m. to say "Hi."

Being new at this, and having a few "to do's" after we arrived, we weren't ready to launch and go with the group at noon. It would have been fun, but instead we got ready at our own pace, and went to launch at around 5 p.m. or so. No experience "power launching" yet, so we waited for an opening at the dock that would end up being a starboard side tie and I backed down. Only a couple of "re-do's" and I was lined up just right. Then I backed in. And backed in some more. And backed in some MORE. Eventually my van's tailpipe was practically in the water and the boat/bunks were still high and dry. Seems like maybe the low water has made the ramp very shallow.

Suddenly we were wishing we had launched with the group (as surely they would have some sage advice). Even if we could somehow power off.... how would we get back "up" onto the bunks to retrieve? I know some folks use a line and the tongue wheel to let the trailer go in further, but (even if we were comfortable with that), the ramp was so shallow I doubt the trailer would have moved.

Well okay, since there was not a pile up of C-Dorys at the ramp, we knew they must have launched somehow. My buddy went over to the the dock on the other side of the (wide) ramp (would be port side tie) and it seemed just slightly deeper. So over I went and, luckily, it was just enough deeper to float the boat (and not the van). Whew!

We need to run back over to the parking lot in the morning (I'm leaving the rig at a storage place, and I need to take it up there first thing and they will run me back to the marina), so we just puttered across the bay and anchored. The moonrise was fantastic - have been waiting to experience one aboard :D

An hour or so after dark we saw a boat approach nearby and prepare to anchor. Of course we kind of "checked them out" - you know how you do when someone comes in nearby - and... it's another C-Dory -- fun! Looks like either a 22 or maybe a CC 23, but I can't tell for sure in the dark. Maybe we'll find out in the morning

For now, just listening to the wavelets on the hull and enjoying being afloat. The moon is high and bright, there is a ribbon of glad across the water astern, and the breeze is soft and with just a hint of coolness. Once we get the van squared away tomorrow, we hope to head for Oak Canyon to join up with the gang.

Just for future--we have always found that cars and trucks are perfectly safe in the parking lots at Powell. We have left them there in excess of 2 weeks with no issues.

I hope everyone on the lake is staying dry. We're in Moab (busy place), and looking at our third thunderstorm in less than 24 hours. How was it at Oak canyon? Catch fish and have fun!

We had a fantastic 3 nights with the Brats..one at the harbor..two at Oak Canyon but sadly had to return to Waheap marina because if a dead house battery...but it charged up at the marina tonight so we suspect an electrical short. The 50 miles back to the marina were pretty miserable chop..and us without a house battery or marine radio...we took on a Lot of water in the cockpit ...since the bilge pump didn't work...we were do happy to see flat water and the marina at the end of the day...tomorrow we go find a new battery..but will sadly miss the rest of the groups adventure.

The group is at Hall's Crossing right now, eating ice cream and etc. Picked up a signal so I thought I would post.

Mary - I'm sorry Freedom had to go back. We missed you last night and today.

It was quite windy yesterday. The group headed to the Escalante Arm from Oak, and as we made our way up the arm, the wind really picked up. Sheets of "white water" were being blown across the water at near cabintop height during the gusts (in the side canyons), but all fared okay.

We went up Clear Creek Canyon to Cathedral in the Desert -- where we went further up last year, this year there was a waterfall. The light was pretty there, so I think there should be a number of boat photos (I had my hands and brain full just doing the promenade in close quarters, so not snapping pics).

Discovery had gone ahead to look for a camp spot, but didn't find anything. Meanwhile, we went up Davis Canyon to try to see LaGorce Arch. But the wind and chop had us turning around partway up, saving it for another day.

To try to find a camp spot, we proceeded back out and up to Iceberg Canyon. That run was a workout (for me anyway), with wind and chop. Not that it was that bad in the grand scheme of things, but not the silky smooth mirror you always hope for.

We wound way back into Iceberg, taking the right fork at the end, and found a "beach in the trees." It sort of had "parking spots" between dividers of old tree branches. We just fit the group in (although Secret of Life anchored across and down a ways and "commuted" on their stand-up paddleboards). It was still pretty windy, so between that and everyone being tuckered, it was an early night and no fire. We'd all sat around and talked while a beautiful moon rose at Oak Harbor; the canyon was so deep at Iceberg that the sky was but a slit, and I couldn't stay awake long enough for "moon rise," which I think would have been for about 15 minutes at midnight!

This morning we had a leisurely departure and a nice smooth run up to Hall's. Bit of a contrast to yesterday. From here we plan to head up to Forgotten Canyon to see what we can find.

We have 12 boats now (13 with Freedom):

16
See-Saw

22's
Bossa Nova
C-Swell
Hunky Dory
Rana Verde
Secret of Life
Sunbeam
Voyager
Valkyrie

CC 23
Freedom

25's

We enjoyed hot showers and meals at Wahweap and went to town for another house battery..saw the dam from the road and played tourist..weather forecast for today is nice but the winds are going to kick up again so we are going to find campsites closer to "home" for the next few days.. I know,I am a wimp, but that chop was worse than the Carquinez straits and the 100 miles up river sounds too ambitious..perhaps we will see you all on your way back.

Sure glad that the Lake Powell 'brats' are our on the water, and except for the windy spells, having a great time. We enjoy reading the posts and miss the good times together out there on Powell. Trust the rest of the adventure will be wonderful and look forward to your news. Hi to all our good friends and remembering the fine times we shared on Powell together.

Yesterday afternoon the whole gang went up to Forgotten Canyon. Anchorages were tight - I think somewhat due to the low water - but we all managed to squeeze into a sliver of beach thanks to our "boat valets." That is, Hunky Dory Jay and Voyager Jody went in with their Mokais and then with Jody on shore and Jay in the water we could each come in one at a time and cut power at which point they would pull our boats in and help us get settled (not that everyone needed this, but it was sure helpful for some :thup). There was a hump right in front of the beach that was about a foot deep.

(Side note: I put the first scratch in my boat getting into my spot in Iceberg the other night. Never thought it would be caused by a tree!)

Our spot was a nice semi-circle of beach in a sheltered place, so it was a relaxing evening. Some of us swam, others "SUP'ed," and a few hiked up to Defiance House. After dinners aboard our individual boats, we had a nice group fire on the beach (thanks to Hunky Dory and Rana Verde who brought firewood). We managed to stay up until the moonlight crept onto the high walls, but not all the way until moonrise. It was a great evening of shared company.

This morning/noon, the group started to break up. Voyager, Hunky Dory, Discovery, and Rana Verde headed for home (i.e. Bullfrog and Wahweap respectively); C-Swell, Valkyrie, and Bossa Nova were gone by the time I emerged but I'm not sure where to; See-Saw headed for Annie's Canyon. I think they are going to spend another day or so on the lake. Secret of Life has some open-ended time and went up-lake from Forgotten. We also have more time and we're bound for Annie's Canyon to see if we can find See-Saw and to find a spot to hunker down for the blow that's forecast to start tomorrow late morning and last until late Thursday night. If we don't find something there, we'll probably head back to Iceberg, just because we know it from the other day. We hope to meet up with Secret of Life later in the week (but it's easy to miss each other here on the lake, with very limited VHF reception).

I've only been here once before (last fall, not on my boat), but my limited knowledge from then is somewhat cancelled out by the fact that the water is 30' lower. It's weird to see the same places but this different!

Sorry to not upload any photos, but this connection is pretty slow. It's fun to at least connect though. I wish everyone had been here.

PS: So far everything on the boat is working pretty well. Whew, since I had so many systems all the way apart, and only a very short trip before this big one. Just a few small things, really. First is that my main engine resumed its "sinking" behavior last night. Boo! The boat seems to run best with it all the way down, so that's fine. And I can (so far) trim it up to run in shallow water position. However it will sink down after about an hour..... so I'll have to keep that in mind at shore spots (and then get it repaired after this trip).

Otherwise it's mostly "little" things like "I'd like to add a hook here," or "this cooler is a pain since blocks of ice won't fit into it," or "how the heck do I get the depth numbers to show up in something bigger than infinitesimal size!?" But mostly it's just super fun and I love this boat :D And the C-Brats :D

More later - must go find snug anchorage now.
