09/21 Lake Powell September 2013 Gathering

Just posted some photos in the C-Swell album under Lake Powell Labor Day Weekend 2013. I want to get everyone psyched for the upcoming gathering. Weather was pretty decent over that weekend with a high around 97 on Friday and 93 the other days. Low around 72 at night. Water was about 78 to 82 degrees. We had one late afternoon rain shower and one during the night. The rest of the time it was partly sunny. As you can see from the photos the water level is way down. I had no trouble launching at Halls Crossing but the ramp has been narrowed down at waters edge. Those of you launching at Bullfrog might want to check the Wayne's Word Message Boards, Main Forum, Lake Powell Recreation for Bullfrog ramp updates. http://www.wayneswords.com/ I think the main ramp is about to come out of the water. I think Jody is trying to stay current on this and will probably update us with what he hears.

We went north on this four day trip up to about Trachyte Canyon about 5 miles before Hite. Being Labor Day Weekend most of the beaches in the side canyons had boats or tents on them every night. We had no trouble finding spots along the main channel. I saw a pretty good beach in Forgotten Canyon but with the lake down it did not look like we would be able to get to the beaches we used in 2010 and 2011. I was not able to make last falls gathering. The Explorer Canyon beach up the Escalante Arm is not reachable this year either. Jody and I discovered that in April.

We are probably not going to be able to get up into Oak Canyon and will have to use one of the beaches as you come into the bay. There was a spot by the floating pump out Jody, Clint & Amy and Sue & I used in April, that worked out pretty good. We will just have to see what things look like when we all get there.

Sue and I are planning on launching at Halls Crossing around noon on Thursday the 19th, we will stop at The Rincon that night and make are way to Oak Canyon probably Friday or Saturday. Looking forwarding to seeing some old faces and hope to meet some new ones. Hope everyone has no problems on the way to Powell and arrives safely.

Bill

Here's some old pictures of the low lake levels and Bullfrog. You might have to go to the left side of the ramp to get in to deeper water.
Don't know why they didn't move the dock to where it has been before.

This one is today a little grainy getting dark.

Chris

My wife Diane and I are coming from Northern California and have planned to attend the Lake Powell gathering this year. This will be our first time with this group and the first time on Lake Powell. Therefore, we are taking Tony and Diane from C-View's advise and seek to meet up with you. If you are agreeable for us to meet with you, could you please advise on what harbor and date you are launching?

Thank you very much.
Heinz & Diane

Heinz & Diane...I will be launching at Wahweap on Friday (Sept 20) morning. Will meet up at the store on the dock just south of the launch ramp around noon to gather any boats that want to tag along with me.

Just a note to remind folks with 25's that you will probably want to prop down to compensate for the altitude at Lake Powell...figure 3500 feet. The 25's that are propped for sea level seem to really suffer at altitude. The 22's seem to do fine...I loose about 200 RPM on my 22.

The water level looks like it will be down...but not as low as our 2004 gathering. As Jody says...plenty of new rocks to see!

This will be our first trip to Lake Powell too, as well as our first C-brats outing. We are definitely looking forward to it! We plan to arrive at Waheap Marina on Thursday afternoon and have reserved one of their guest berths for the night. I suspect we'll head out on the lake sometime on Friday after we've done some organizing and also topped our water and fuel - and hopefully connected with some other C-brats. We'll be keeping our eyes open :smile

This will also be our first trip to Lake Powell and Marcia, Boomer (our Airedale buddy) and I will start the long trek from Ohio on the 12th, probably arriving at Wahweap on the 17th. We plan on wandering on our own and fishing for a few days before heading to Oak Canyon.

Really looking forward to meeting more C-Brat friends.

Regards,

Nick

Chris,

Thank you very much for your reply.

Wahweap on Friday, September 20 it is...

We will be leaving California in the morning of the 18th and have planned to arrive on the 19th late afternoon.

At Wahweap, are there always guest dock spaces available or should we call ahead for reservations?

Heinz & Diane

Would be a good idea to get a reservation...although the season is winding down after Labor Day and there is usually plenty of room.

Hi Everyone,

I hope you all have a great time at Lake Powell this year. Wish we were going too, but there are just too many competing/conflicting interests. We're leaving Sunday for the Four Corners area, although it might be a week or so before we get there. We're taking US 50 across Nevada, then I-15 and I-70 out to Moab and area. If any of the CBrats see us, look out... It's a crazy old man in a gold F250, pulling an Airstream. I normally go real slow :disgust, and keep the left blinker on at all times

Wave if you see us, we'll do the same.

Brent and Dixie, not sure if we are going to make it to Loa on this trip. I'll send you a note if we do, but I suspect you may be on the way to Texas by then.

Everyone be safe and have a wonderful time. BTW, my recipe for striped bass filets is pretty good. Send me a note if you want to know how I fix it.

Steve, Stop and see us on the way to Moab, if your on I15 then I70 were not that far off the track. We will be in Utah until Oct 28th at least, then to Rockport for the winter.

We'll see the C-Brats at Lake Powell.

I misplaced, loaned out or lost my Stan Jones map. I can not at this late date order on line. Does anyone have an idea where a copy could be bought in Paige? See you all next week.

That's good to hear Jody. We have been having rain showers on and off all week in Durango and that trend is suppose to continue through next Monday. Some of that wet stuff will make it's way down to the San Juan River and end up in Lake Powell. Maybe it will still be rising next week.

Lyle, you can pick them up at the Marinas, or at least you could last year.

The park service was just about ready to close the Antelope Point launch ramp. Looks like it will remain open into October now.

Trail from Lake Powell to Rainbow Bridge Closed

Page, AZ – Rainbow Bridge National Monument is closed indefinitely due to a trail washout after heavy rains fell in the area over the last several days. The damage includes a complete loss of approximately 150 feet of trail between the dock and the first shade structure, with a 21 foot drop-off into Bridge Creek. Debris has collected at the mouth of the creek and will need to be removed from the dock area. Crews assessed the damage yesterday and plans are underway to develop a temporary trail until a more permanent trail can be constructed.

The Chains area near Page is closed to vehicular traffic due to rains. Several feet of sand and mud were deposited on some areas of the road, while in other areas the water cut down through the dirt, making the road impassable. Visitors can still access the Hanging Garden Trail by walking in from the parking lot near the gate.

Lees Ferry also received heavy rains, but crews have been able to remove the boulders and debris from roadways and all lanes and facilities are open, with the exception of the parking area near Paria Canyon.

Throughout the storm event, visitors were evacuated when needed and no one was injured. This is a reminder that flash floods can happen very quickly and it is important to be aware of your surroundings and the weather for an extended area. Higher resolution images of the storm damage are on the NPS website.
