Hi All -

I'm a happy camper today. I just purchased a new 22 Cruiser. I live on Lake Superior, so the rig is going to see both cruising and fishing time. Wish me luck while I'm getting accustomed to this new beauty next Spring. Anybody want a really nice 1989 Larson Lazer? Gotta sell it to pay the bills. Ha. Ha.

Hello From Guttenberg, Iowa

This is a personal invitation to you and yours to join us at the upcoming “National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering” in Guttenberg, Iowa on September 9 & 10, 2011 (always on the second week of September).

Best Rergards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

Even though the Mississippi River is now freezing over, we are starting to make plans for the National C-Brat Gathering in Guttenberg, Iowa in September (second weekend) 2011.

There were several things learned during/after last years gathering that we had not recognized during the planning stages.

For most C-Brats that attended, the gathering in Guttenberg was part of a bigger plan, a vacation/adventure on the Mississippi River and/or the upper Mississippi River Valley.

Now looking back, we realize that just getting to the Gathering required a great amount of effort and planning for everyone attending.

After all, the 2010 gathering in Guttenberg, Iowa had C-Dorys from home ports of Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and just us from Iowa.

For example of one adventure; Tex and Sharon drove from Cypress,Texas to somewhere north of Minneapolis, launched “Bixby's Cub”, adventured down river to Guttenberg. After the gathering, adventured back north, loaded the boat and headed for Lake Powell via a stop in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

Here is another adventure;

A)  I flew up to "Spokane" from Tucson to view the 2006 22' Cruiser model in February this year. This occurred after I "found" the boat advertised on Craigslist Spokane/Portland.

B)  After Email and telephone negotiations with the sellers, I sent them full payment. Since I was already in New Zealand and not returning to the USA until May, there was no hurry on my part.  They agreed to allow me to keep the boat on their property until June of this year.

C)  In late June I prepared the Ford F250 truck/camper and drove to Spokane.  It was a very beautiful experience traveling through northern Arizona, and the states of Utah, Wyoming, and Idaho.  Then after attaching the boat and trailer I headed eastward through Idaho, Montana, S. Dakota, Minnesota, Iowa, and Wisconsin.  The "truck" performed perfectly resulting in a very enjoyable experience and provided me with the certainty that the C-Dory 22 Cruiser was the right choice.

D)  As you may recall, upon arrival and launch at the Guttenberg Municipal Marina, the Honda 90 would not start!  This was disappointing but   The week after the "gathering" I drove to see family near Janesville, Wisconsin where I disassembled the intake manifold, rebuilt the carburetors which were all full of the sticky waxy residue from dried up "ETHANOL"!!!  However all was not lost as Bruce Cassel ("CARPY"), who was alone at the gathering, invited me to join him for the river cruises we all enjoyed.

E)  "CLOVER" is now in winter storage at one of those "self-storage" places in southern Wisconsin waiting for our return in June 2011.

From Barry Rietz (Sierra Vista, AZ)

Hopefully there will be other stories/adventures added to this thread from attendees of the Gutteneberg Gathering of what it took to “just get there”.

Last years gathering was planned for a Friday & Saturday evenings with a get aquatinted on Friday evening and BBQ banquet on Saturday evening.

When we arrived back in Guttenberg Wednesday evening (before the gathering) there was one C-Dory already in the marina (Chiquitita) and Barry Rietz came pulling in around 10:00 PM.

We started receiving people on Thursday with an impromptu get aquatinted Thursday evening.

Anyway, what we learned is that to properly assist C-Brats coming long distances, we need to understand that they may want to arrive early and leave later and chances are that they are interested in explore other communities up and down the river, before and after the gathering.

Consequently other communities are being contacted in Mississippi River pool #10 & #11 (above and below Lock & Dam #10 at Guttenberg, Iowa) who have already expressed much interest and excitement to have the C-Brats visit their communities.

These communities already are offering Welcome Bags, Visitors Guides, Vacation Value Cards etc. (more details later) as they would any other convention coming to their communitie/s.

Just think , Mississippi River C-Brats, we are now considered as a “convention”.

I have attached links for review, hopefully some of you will consider planning a trip or vacation cruising the Mississippi River and attending the 2011 National C-Brat Gathering in Guttenberg, Iowa as part of your plans.

C-Cakes, along with crew of Barry and Patti, plan to attend the 2011 upper Mississippi gathering. It sounds like great fun. We've never been in the area and look forward to new adventures. There is quite a bit of information in the thread pages but we still have some questions. The date is shown as September 9-10 but we can start arriving a day or two earlier; is that correct? We plan to do some exploring either before or after the gathering probably up to Lake St Croix; can you recommend sources for information about that area and other places we outsiders should see? It looks like we will be locking through in a few places, are there any special things we need to bring to make the locking easier, for example longer lines, bigger fenders, etc. And, are there launch ramps and safe parking for tow vehicles nearby? As you can tell from these questions we are pretty ignorant about boating on a river and in that area and appreciate your patience in answering what must seem like Duh! questions.

Hello Patti, Barry and C-Cakes,

Absolutely fantastic that you are making plans to include the “2nd Annual National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering and Reunion” scheduled for September, 9 & 10, 2011 in Guttenberg, Iowa.

I/we will do everything we can to assist you as we go along.

The first gathering was organised as a sort of tong in cheek of “why not here” as compared to gatherings in coastal areas.

Somehow the idea worked and last year we had sixteen boats show up from home ports of Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Minnesota, South Dakota, Texas, Wisconsin and of course Iowa (us) were represented.

We really had a good time.

About navigation charts; The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers Navigation Information Connection is at http://www2.mvr.usace.army.mil/NIC2/mrcharts.cfm

Navigating is very simple on the Mississippi River if you stay in the channel. Stay between the red markers (called “Nuns” with pointed tops) and the green markers (called “Cans” with a flat top) and the Corp. Of Engineers guarantee a nine (9) foot depth to support barge traffic.

Last year the gathering was really scheduled for Friday evening with a “get aquatinted” and on Saturday evening a Bar-B-Q Banquet.

However, boats started coming on Wednesday evening so we started getting aquatinted a little earlier than scheduled, same with Thursday evening, had a big time each evening.

The gathering took on a life of it’s own and we all enjoyed ourselves.

This year we will have a get aquatinted both Thursday and Friday evening with the Bar-B-Q banquet on Saturday evening.

I figure if boats start showing up on Wednesday evening we will start earlier than planned, who cares when we are all having fun.

We meet for breakfast every morning (for those that wanted to) at a local restaurant and then are on our own each day.

Some grouped up and cruised together, some struck out on their own, some stayed and explored Guttenberg and the surrounding areas.

Saturday we “group cruise” down river (27 miles) for “lunch on Mud Lake” then return on our own for the Banquet that evening.

A $25.00 per head charge covered some of the gathering cost of a T-Shirt, snacks, ice and the Saturday evening banquet with fabulous “Blue Bunny” ice cream and fresh baked pie/s for desert.

Everyone brought their favorite beer and any snacks they wanted to share each evening, everything else was furnished and we just had a good time.

We just winged “it” and “it” worked.

About pot luck, I figured since people have to travel some long distance/s, a pot luck just did not seem convenient for them so why not furnish everything we could as a group.

Also something new this year: We want to invite anyone interested in C-Dory boats, who do not have a C-Dory (yet) and want to learn more about them, come take part in the gathering.

All I would ask though, if anyone is here without a boat and is invited along an a day trip, that they be aware that some contribution to the boat for gas would be appropriate.

Also, about “LOOT”, last year, like this year there will be a “LOOT” table which is what companies/vendors or individuals choose to donate and given away to the C-Brats (door prizes, etc.).

The best way I/we could figure out how to do this fairly was, at sign up the boat name was written on a slip of paper and placed in a basket, at the banquet as we drew out boat names, one of the crew would come forward and chose an item/gift off the “LOOT” table of their liking, this continued over and over until all the “LOOT” was distributed.

That way everyone had a choice of their gifts.

This year we welcome “LOOT” from any vendor or individual that wants to contribute, any and all “loot” is greatly appreciated, the more the better.

The parking for your vehicle/s is very safe and is directly across the street in front of our house (where the gathering festivities are held).

I/we too have the local Police on our side and everything is closely watched (the Police Chief is a personal friend).

If you haven’t already, take a look at;
www.c-brats.com/modules.php?set_albumNa ... _album.php

The group shots are in our courtyard (behind our house), everyone enjoyed the relaxed comfort of our home,  hope you will also ( see our home at www.guttenbergbedandbath.com).

Your question/s are quite appropriate and timely, I hope others will chime in with their suggestions.

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

One of the most useful and interesting events at last years gathering was the C-Dory "open house". During a scheduled time period all the C-Dory owners had their boats at the dock open for tours, It was a lot of fun to walk around and peek inside everyones boats. The modifications and improvements to the boats were truly amazing, and a source of many ideas. I hope that Ron will have this as part of the gathering again this year.

As far as Ideas for your trip, Last year we launched in Minneapolis and spent a few days on the river getting to Guttenberg and returning to Minneapolis. It was a most interesting and scenic trip along the most beautiful sections of the river.
If you have a few extra days it would be well worth it.
We headed west after the Mississippi River Gathering and made the Lake Powell Gathering as well, before heading home to Texas. It looks like the dates for both events will work out again this year to enable us to make both events.
Perhaps this will work for you also, as Lake Powell would be on your route back West.

The procedures for locking through are fairly straightforward. You won't need extra fenders, though you'll probably have to clean the fenders you use, as the walls are rather slimey. The lock supplies lines, so don't worry about extras, though a boathook is handy for grabbing a line as it's handed down from on top of the wall by the lock tender. Here's a cut-and-paste of a description I posted in a thread in 2009:

Locking through single-handed isn't a problem, though I was nervous the first 50 times or so. If it's not windy, a single line from the top will do. Someone will usually drop the line to you. Sit on the cockpit edge on the side of your boat away from the wall, giving you a little better leverage holding the boat against the wall. I put out three fenders. If you're alone, ask the lockmaster if you can just float in the middle. When I do, I place my boat in the miiddle of the lock, fore and aft pointed at the sid e walls. This way if the boat starts to drift towards a wall, a little forward or reverse puts you back in the middle. You're very unlikely to drift from the middle all the way to either end.

Depending on what part of the Mississippi you're on, you'll hail locks 1 to 24 on channel 14, 25 to 27 on channel 12. You'll annoy the lockmaster if you call on the radio before you arrive at the lock. When you arrive, try to be as concise in your transmission as you can, e.g. "Lock 5, this is a northbound recreational craft at the entrance, looking for a lift." This way in the fewest words possible, the lockmaster knows what kind of craft you are, where you're located, and what direction you're headed.

There's a traffic signal, red, yellow, and green, at the mouth of the lock, up above the wall. Don't enter the lock, or even approach to within about 150 feet, until the gates are fully open and you see a green light. If you violate this, the lockmaster will have harsh words for you. Don't leave the lock, or even let go of the line if you're on the chamber wall, until you hear the horn sound after the gates are open. Again, rush out too fast and the lockmaster will likely say unkind things. Enter and leave slowly, no more than 3 knots. Keep it slow exiting until you clear the end of the wall, usually 1000 feet or so past the gates. I find it specially annoying to have some huge cruiser boom past me as I'm leaving. Sometimes those guys pay with a citation when they get to the next lock.

Sometimes you'll have to wait an hour or so. Commercial traffic gets priority, and the bigger tows have to be broken down before they'll fit in the lock. This means the lock will have to cycle up and down twice, with the additional time in between to break the barges apart and then put them back together again. I just get off to the side, out of the way, shut off the engines, and throw out the lunch hook.

Relax. After a while it's fun. I enjoy it now, though in the beginning it was scary.

One more thing about locks. There's a website, http://marinetraffic.com/ais/
that locates all commercial traffic in the world, including barges on the Mississippi. If you have internet access on your boat, such as a smart phone, you can go to this website and see what tows are near locks, before you get there. If you see a tow about to enter a lock 10 miles ahead, you might just anchor in a pleasant cove for a few hours, rather than have to wait at the lock.

I just got back from a trip to the Galapagos Islands. Crossed the Equator several times while traveling from island to island. Have been without Internet access for a couple of weeks. How nice to be back on this forum, and more so to see that the number of boats to the Guttenberg gathering keeps growing, including a boat from Washington State--welcome!!! Laura and I plan to arrive early like we did last year--probably Wednesday. We plan to do a day trip (by land) to Effigy Mounds, maybe Thursday. As the date approaches I will post our plans and hopefully get some company. Regards.

Please, be sure to bring photos and memories of this trip to share with us at the Mississippi River C-Brat gathering in Guttenberg this fall?

Look forward to seeing you both in September.

Good morning from “IOWA ”.

We understand that most everyone attending the “2nd Annual, National Mississippi River C-Brat Gathering & Reunion” in September, have to travel considerable distances.

Considering those distances, some could plan to come earlier and stay later to explore the “Upper Mississippi River”, before heading home.

At the same time to promote “day trips/cruises” during the “Gathering and Reunion”, several communities up and down the river have been contacted to list their attractions etc.

In each instance if any C-Brat will contact the director, via e-mail or otherwise (please identify yourself as a C-Brat), the various communities will mail out a packet of information about their community and attractions.

To help interested C-Brat’s plan their “Upper Mississippi River” vacations and/or adventure/s, information from other communities will be listed as we go along.

The following information is from Patti Wacker, Tourism Coordinator for Prairie du Chien, WI

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

Hi Ron & Connie !
I read in the paper that Guttenberg is celebrating/dedicating the new municipal marina on the 17th, now that the showers/admin. building/lounge etc. is completed. Wow, they sure did do a nice job on that building ! I plan on driving up to take the grand tour. If you're around, I'll stop by to say "Hey".
Paul aboard the Joni Lynn

Hello Paul & Joni,

Wonderful to hear from you, at this point, unless something unexpected comes up, we should be around that Friday (June seventeenth (17th)) and Saturday.

Yes, the new building is beautiful and very impressive, we too plan to attend the dedication.

We would be delighted to see you both, you are always welcome to drop by anytime.

I notice that as of today, including our boat, we have fifteen boats (15) signed up for this falls gathering/reunion.

Any comments about your favourite stops along the river would be great commentary for this years visitors.

I/we look forward to seeing you on the seventeenth (17th).

Best regards,

Ron, Connie, Bear & Dolly Fisher

(We will be offering refunds to anyone that already paid at the regular rate of $1.25/ft). Please remember, reservations are not confirmed until payment is received.
