09/05 - 09/08 - Mississippi River “Meet In The Middle"

Due to a tow vehicle problem we are unable to bring Carpy this year. We were loaded, hitched up and ready to go. We got less than 1 mile and it was obvious we had a problem. Not to be completely deterred, we have come boatless. We are in Dubuque at a B&B tonight, Friday and will see our C-brat friends at the marina on Saturday. It's disappointing to not have our river trip, but we'll have to have a trip of a different nature.

Carpe Diem, Vita Brevis.

Wishing you all a great gathering. We had hoped to attend, but my back problem dictates other wise. Have a bunch of fun! Maybe next year....

Well today it is history (Although some of the C-Brats are still on the river at Dubuque as I write this.) Lee and Jan with the Tully-B are back at their home in Michigan. We had a great time and missed all the great friends who were there last year bur could not make it this year. Ken and Pat did a great job for Ron and Connie who could not make the gathering. We all missed them and hope that all is well with them. The highlight of the event was IMHO was the picnic on the sand bar. Tex furnished homemade ice cream (hand cranked) to go with our pecan pie. Next years plans are shaping up and I would advise you all to stay tuned for some exciting ideas that we are currently exploring. Have a great winter all. Lee

Sorry we were not there this year. Wish we could make all the gatherings. We are heading to Powell next week. Glad you all had a great time. SEE-SAW

Lee and Jan, The pies and dogs were great. Ken and Pat and Sharon and I are on the river camped on a sand bar 100 miles south of Minneapolis, headed north.

Did anyone get some good photos of all the boats on the sand bar? If so, post them up. We are already looking forward to next year.

Sorry I missed you all. I'll get the dates on the calendar for next year and we'll see what happens. Otherwise, I'm giving serious consideration to towing the boat out to the San Juan Islands in the PNW next year, as soon as school is out in June. I'll be starting a new thread on that later, looking for information about cruising out there. Lake Powel would be a fun stop too, maybe on the way back.... looking at possibly going from visiting with my brother in the Seattle area, (and cruising the San Juans), to heading down to Phoenix to visit my folks, before returning. But, just thinking about the long drive that would entail.... Colby

Bixby's Cub and Pelican are home after a cruise up to the twin cities after the gathering. On the way back down the river we stopped in Guttenberg and visited with Ron and Connie. All is well with them.

The next morning we had breakfast with Paul and Joni, of the "Joni Lynn" . They had a family event and could not make it this year, but promise to join us next year.

Wow, The 5th annual 2014 Mississippi River Gathering is going to be the best ever.
It is all happening the weekend following Labor Day weekend, Thursday Sept. 4th thru Sunday Sept. 7th

Ken of the Pelican has just returned from making the arrangements with the Alton, Missouri marina and they are excited to host us for 2014. The Alton marina is north of St. Louis just above the Melvin Price Lock and dam at mile 202.9 altonmarina.com

The Alton marina is Sharon’s favorite marina, because it has 2 hot tubs. They have agreed to have the pool and both hot tubs up and running for our gathering. This is the premier marina on the entire Mississippi River with a ship store, snack bar, Bar-B-Q Pits, marine gas and 4 star rest rooms and showers.

The marina has restricted access and secure parking. There is a nice boat ramp and room to park RV’s, trucks and boat trailers. (Jay, Terry and Bob, there will be plenty of room for your RV, hope to see you guys in 2014.)

We will be in slips at a fully covered dock (Shade) with all hook ups available and thanks to Ken we have a discounted rate for the gathering. Just mention C-Brats when you make your reservation.

There is a lot to see and do. Plan on more than a few days. You can cruise your C-Dory upriver to the winery and ride the zip lines at the Grafton marina located at the confluence of the Illinois River at Mile 218.
Stop at the confluence of the Missouri River and view the Lewis and Clark historical marker Mile 195.6.
Take your boat through the chain of rocks canal Mile 194.2 to downtown St Louis and view the Arch from the river at Mile 179.3 . Continue just south of St louis to Kimmswick and meet living legends Fern and Hoppie at Hoppie’s marina Mile 158.5. It is an easy walk to the shops and restaurants in Kimmswick. Also in Kimmswick is the historic Anheuser Estate and Museum
Of course, there are all the usual attractions in St. Louis, brewerys, ballparks, etc.
ExploreStLouis.com

The Alton Belle casino is on the river just a couple of blocks away.

The #1 attraction in Alton is Fast Eddie’s Bon Air, owned by the Anheuser Busch company in the 1920’s, Only 7 items on the menu, featuring a 1/2 pound hamburger for 99 cents and the most expensive item is the famous “Big Elwood” tenderloin for $2.99
I like the 29 cent jumbo shrimp. There is always live music and cold beer at Fast Eddie’s. fasteddiesbonair.com

This can be the starting point of an extended cruise or the destination. In May we left our trucks and trailers in secure storage at the Alton marina while we traveled the Missouri River for 2 weeks. Take a bit of extra time and cruise this part of the Mississippi River or explore the nearby Missouri or Illinois Rivers.

Make reservations at the Alton Marina at 618 462-9860

See everyone in 2014

(Barry, the McDonald's is right across the street from the marina)
