09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

We have decided to take the pressure off and have made reservations on the BC Ferry for 9/2/05 @ 15:15. We would have really liked to motor up but since we have to be back in Seattle by Monday the 19th I think this is best.
I think we may try going north with Lyle and Shelley the first week but I guess we can get this all figured out at Blakely.
Brock, no way would we have left with out you.

Fred

Dang it Fred, that is logical but just completely lacks emotional appeal! I'm waiting for David to get back to talk this over one more time! (As you know, he is on a 10 day Gulf Islands / Princess Louisa trip right now as I type this, I am pretty envious, look for his photos next week). Don't start the conversation about this at Blakely without Patty and me!

 I am not going to be able to make the trip to Desolation this year. BUMMER!
Oh, how I looked forward to this trip and to sharing it with some wonderful folks. But, not to be. Our summer plans have taken a detour. My husband has taken a vintage car to a race in California for the last 20 plus years, but this year we failed to make to cut. He is majorly bummed. The day after his "reject" letter arrived, he got an invitation to take a car to a festival and rally in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. This made my husband go from bummed to extreamly excited. This is very cool for him. His cars are as important to him as my C-Dory is to me. Plus, one of the rally stops is at the EAA museum at Oshkosh (one of Cordell's other passions- Airplanes) So, being his co-driver (of the tow vehical, not race car) and chief pit crew member, I am excited too. The bad part is that we have to leave during the first week of September and won't return until the 23rd. I can go to Desolation next year, but this is a one time opportunity for Cordell.

So, I am going to miss a wonderful trip. Please take plenty of notes and pictures for "DESOLATION 2006"!!! Robbi

Roberta, I know I speak for everyone when I whine I'm really sorry you can't make this trip. We could have rowed around the bays with matching blue dinghys, maybe even raced, I don't know. And the big boat cruising's sort of fun, too.

There'll be many more opportunities to see that memorable marine park, and I know you'll go there when you can. Meanwhile, you'll still be with us in spirit, and way to go for committing in the first place.
:rainbow

Thanks Catman. :cat I am really counting on getting up there next year with the Brates. Never to early to plan, right? Robbi

Well, I haven't completely thought this through, but maybe you could substitute Roz for the car thing and you could go to Desolation - you think it would work?

Pat, Why didn't I think of that? Having a stand-in in life can have its benefits. :female :female Problem is, she is still teaching and will be back at work. Too bad. Just take lots of pics so I can get ready for the 06 trip. See you at Blakely. Robbi

I spoke with Scott M today and he says "its in the mold" so I think
I still have a chance at getting to go on the Desolation trip.
I hope there may be a willing mentor or two with advice in the
Anacortis area about the end of Aug. to get me off on the right
foot.
This sight has been a great help with making desisions up to this
point THANKS ALL.

John Schuler

John, Fred's learned a heck of of lot and he speaks for all of us when he offers his experience. We're there for you, big fella.

I have to go now. I'm heading to University Place to lobby and twist a certain arm.

:cat You better hurry, I am out the door in a few hours to head out to the gathering at Blakely. If you did show your face in UP, it would result in a dual twisting. I would be trying to get you to come to Blakely. Please please please :cry Robbi

At the Blakely gathering this weekend we started to make some more detailed plans for the Desolation trip. The Anita Marie and Bess C are going for both weeks. We will be leaving Friday the 2nd. We were hoping to get a list of how many people will be coming for both weeks, first week or second week.
For the second week we have so far Daydream, Susan E and Anna Leigh.
We have talked about the first week cruising further north from Desolation. If weather and time permits even to the Broughtons.
Nothing is cast in stone but maybe it is time to start firming up some of the plans.

Fred

We will be leaving the SF bay area either the 2 or 3rd and should have 3 weeks. I don't expect to be ready to launch and go until Monday or Tues. That is getting to Cambel River and doing final provisioning etc.

We are looking forward to our big vacation.

Steve

Well, it's 6 weeks until the start of the first week of the Desolation Sound cruise, so I'm bringing this back to the top. We're starting to plan and get organized in earnest. I see 10 boats signed up and a couple of more people who've indicated that they might go. Some are going both weeks and some are going the second week. I'm not sure if any are going just the first week.

Shelley and I kind of messed up the planning session at Blakely by wandering off to breakfast and causing a late start. Sorry about that! So in order to make amends I'm trying to help get the ball rolling again on the planning. I am in no way trying to get in Brock's way as leader. He is the inspiration, moderator and planner of this trip. I'm just going to list what I've heard and see if we can get a little further on the planning.

Here is what I know... Fred & Robin (Anita Marie) and Shelley and I (Bess-C) are going for both weeks. I think that Brock (Catman) is going for both weeks, but I'm not sure. Steve (Sea Spray) is coming for both weeks and arriving in Campbell River on Sunday the 4th or Monday the 5th. Pat & Patty (Daydream), David & Kate (Anna Leigh) are going the second week only. John Schuler (Clara) is coming if his boat is finished. Not sure John whether that will be for both weeks. All boats will meet up at Gorge Harbor on Cortes Island on Saturday the 10th.

Don & Dee (Knotty C), Larry (Nancy H), Tom & Susan (Susan E), Dave & Martha (Cute-C), we don't know what your plans are. If you don't want to put your plans on the website, you might email Brock and let him know your plans as they firm up. Is that ok Brock?

Fred & Robin and Shelley and I are talking about going at least as far the first week to the area called the Discovery Islands just northwest of Desolation Sound. There are some great destinations there. If the weather's good and we feel like it we are talking about pushing on to the Broughton's. It's a huge area that Shelley and I've only visited once. Larry (Nancy H) knows it well and cautions that it may be too much to take on with our time allotment. So, the decision is open at this time.

We haven't even made a decision in our own household as to how far we'll travel. I like to look around every corner and Shelley wants planned days with no travel except hiking interspersed. So a lot of the schedule will be determined by weather, people's interests and other factors that we won't be able to control.

Maybe the way to go it to start a list of destinations for the second week. Then create a loose schedule based on how the list plots out a trip plan. If you have an area that you really want the group to explore, indicate it on the website. The idea was also mentioned that we schedule an every other day meeting point with open schdules for the "off" days. Just an idea. Well, I've written enough, anyone else want to chime in here?

Well, we have made one decision - it is the ferry for Daydream. We are reserved on the September 10 ferry at 7:45 a.m., BUT the system wouldn't make a reservation for the trip BACK...it said the reservation is system is not set up yet for September 18...I HOPE that is not going to be a problem, of course I would have to assume that nobody else has a reservation for that date yet either...

Didn't the Kingston Trio do a song about that?

  • Well, did he ever return
    No, he never returned
And his fate is still unlearned (what a pity)

I just thought I'd make a comment about an issue from a while back. I like to follow this topic as the BC coast is where I grew up and where I spend a week or so each summer. I just got back from there (Union Bay, on Vancouver Island) last week, and can report that I bought marked marine gas for 88.9 cents per litre. It always puzzled me why anyone would worry about paying $1.00 per litre or more to fill the tank on their boat in Canada. I know that 88.9 is bad enough...that was $39.14 for 10 imperial gallons exactly. Hope the weather is fantastic for you all...it was for me.

Ron B.

Ron,
Gas at $1.00 CDN per liter is about $3.10 USD per US gallon.

Gas here in Ventura county is about $2.50 USD per US gallon, or about $.81 CDN per liter. I guess if you are used to the $2.50 then the $3.10 seems high. :sad

Our gallons are puny in comparison to Imperial. Six US gallons equals 5 Imperial gallons.
:crook

Larry,

What I didn't make clear in my post is that I thought there was confusion regarding the sale of fuel in Canada which has road tax on it and regularily sells for more than a dollar now in BC, and the availability of marine gas which is marked and does not have the same taxes applied and sells for 10 or more cents cheaper. It seemed to me that people may not be aware of the different fuel options here in Canada. I hope I'm not stating the obvious. Anyway, the price of gas is pointless when you consider the breathtaking beauty of Desolation Sound and the priceless experience of being there. Bon voyage!

I'm going to keep bringing this one back to the top for planning purposes. Anybody else out there besides the listed folks that is considering coming along on this adventure?

How about the Canadian contingent? I know it might hurt your reputation to be seen with Yanks , but it's just not a party without Canadians. I worked for a Canadian company for 20 years, and have vacationed on Vancouver Island for the past 15. I've found that any celebration is better with Canadian whiskey, Canadian beer and Canadians adding their sense of humor to a group.
