09/03 - 09/18 - Desolation Sound 2005

Never owned a Corvette, so can't comment, but you are going to LOVE your C-Dory!

Thank you both.

I ordered both books.

A help on local information will come in handy when I get
over there. I"ve allready had more fun with the C-Dory than I

had with the 1966 corvette I sold to pay for it.

Thanks again.

Hey Brats, Just thought we would touch base with some of you folks that may be coming up to Desolation Sound.
Stopped at Salmon Point Marina on our way to Rock Bay and took some pictures that you might find interesting. See Photo Album. :photo
Also picked up a copy of Boater Blue Pages Marina Guide. "FREE"

Just bringing this up to the top again, we now have the NDI Canadian vector charts for Vancouver East for use with Coastal Explorer, these charts are awesome! Coverage area has pretty much all the San Juans too, as a bonus. Have waypoints and routes for Princess Louisa as well as Desolation Sound...now, just need to get the Raymarine C-80 installed and download the waypoints and routes to it from the 'puter...

I have not been able to keep up on the posts! Is there a way to go from a PC to the C80?

I am still having trouble with my C80 setup with the Autopilot. The auotpilot just does not work like it should.

Also, while at Lake Powell my C80 placed the boat about 1/2 mile east of our position. This only lasted for about 1/2 an hour. I tried turning it off and on but it was still incorrect. I have never had a gps do that before. Later it seemed to correct itself. This could be a problem if you are in an area where it is not readily obvious that your posistion on the chart ploter is incorrect. Has this happened to anyone else?

Steve

Rose Point Navigation promises that the next version of Coastal Explorer, due "any day now," will be able to transfer waypoints and routes to chartplotters. Two unexpected setbacks, though, first the laptop screen is not daylight readable, it it going to have to be in the veeberth to see it, and second, the USB puck - computer connection is somewhat flaky. Set it up and it worked fine at home (located our "boat" right here in Fall City), but when plugged in on the boat, came up with New Hardware Installation Wizard - I cancelled, and it said "There was a problem installing your new hardware, it might not work correctly." So I plugged it in again and let the wizard do automatic installation - after that, Streets and Trips and Coastal Explorer both reported there was no GPS connected...Can anybody tell me what I need to do next? I probably can use the Garman GPSMAP76 with manual configuration, but I would sure like to use the nifty little puck...

My first thought was that you might not have plugged the USB plug into the precise socket it was plugged into when you installed the drivers and software. Some software/hardware gets very cranky in that regard.

Pat,

Give me a shout and maybe I can come over and give you a hand with it.

I've not had too much trouble with mine. But it does get a little flaky when the machine goes into hibernate and then comes back out. Then I have to unplug the USB cable and close Streets/trips and then plug it back in. I think this is the USB driver doing this and not the puck. I say this as I have a utility I downloaded that always seems to see the puck even though Streets and Trips doesn't. I've yet to play with the laptop and Coastal Explorer.

Bill and Chris, Welcome to the Pub. Another 25 in the San Juans. Keep us posted on your progress. Not sure how many boats are going to Desolation Sound. There may be a sign up list on the sight. Some are trailering up and some are boating up.

What color is your boat, power, etc.

Bill and Chris - the C-Pod will be cruising Desolation Sound and environs September 3rd through 18th. Because people will be coming up at different times, we will be meeting up at Gorge Harbor the weekend of the 10th and 11th. Do those dates fit into your plans?

We're definitely in. I'm going to make our reservation for the 9/2 ferry to Nanaimo. We'll stay in Nanaimo on Friday night and then launch at Salmon Point on Saturday morning.

Still not sure of our plans once we're on the water. It sounds like most of you are going up the second week of September. If so, we may travel further north and west the first week and then come back to Desolation Sound to be with you the second week. Let's keep comparing schedules as we get closer.

Maybe we could put some time aside at the Blakely gathering to do some pre planning. We will be going for the whole two weeks and will also be leaving the morning of the 2nd. I would like to boat all the way but am a little hesitant to do it alone.

Fred, I understand. And I'm now waffling on the idea of cruising up from Anacortes/Nanaimo. While I'd love to, I have reservations because there are others to consider, and I'm boating with vessels considerably larger than mine. It wouldn't be right to hold people back because of my weather fears.

If I cruise up we'll just have to agree to split if necessary and meet later in Desolation.

I am planning on being in Portland Friday night 9/2 staying with friends. Then Saturday going to the Port Angales ferry or driving to Twassian ferry. I am thinking I won't make it to Cambel River until Sunday.

I don't know if I will launch Sunday or wait till Monday morning. Will there be anyone else launching from Cambel River?

I like taking the Port Angales to Victory route because I don't have to drive through Seattle, but the drive up Island is also long. Does anyone have recommendations for one way or the other?

After our great trip to P.L. i have decided to launch at pender harbor. I just have to find a place to leave the rig. any one know a good marina where i can leave the truck and trailer? we should be able to make cortaz by noon saturday for the get to gather. This will save me a ferry ride and there are some islands on the way that I want to see.

A little planning is good...so far, all I know is that we are meeting up at Gorge Harbor on the middle weekend (September 10?). I also would like to boat up (from Blaine, in our case), and we are doing only the second week. Probably try to get the Friday off, be at Birch Bay Thursday night, and leave at oh-dark-thirty Friday morning to hopefully catch some flat water. I too would prefer to have a companion boat or two for the journey - I think Anna Leigh may accompany us up, need to chat some more.
