08/20 - 08-26 - Catalina Adventure in Paradise 2006

Joel and Susan SEA3PO-

Kath and I will miss you both at Catalina. Again, we sure enjoyed our motorcycle ride up to Chester and visiting you folks. Hope to do it again next year!

Bob and Katy reporting from a pre-gathering recon this weekend.

Isthmus and Cat Harbors both full Friday, Sat, and Sun with a Bennitoou gathering. Can you imagine!!!??? Frog legs and snails for all!

Pretty good weather in Cat Harbor, but windy starting around noon. 30 kts clocked yesterday at 1600. Did not delay Happy Hour, we're Happy to report. Water temp about 67 at surface, 62 at 50' or so. Vis-accaptable.

Lots of moorings available from Sunday noon on.

We'll be stopping at Johnson's Rock for a quick dive coming over on Sunday, sporting our new bimini from Channel Islands Canvas.

Anyone interested in a hike up to the top of the hill behind Banning House, bring boots. The view is rated "Superior".

Remember, we have dessert covered.

1 hr, 10 min from West End to MDR today @ 24 kts. Smoooooth.

I'm bringing the meats.....whose bringing the corn? Roger? Somebody doin' the salad? How about appetizers? Barbecue on the beach Monday evening, dinner at the resturant Friday evening. Fish fry one night after a successful fishing excursion. How does Wednesday sound for that? That would make Thursday the ideal day for the Dingy Race. The rest of the time will be on Island time!!

No C-Brats banner I guess. I wonder who wound up with the C-DOG banner.

Ron, looks like just you and I to cruise to MDR on Sunday. Say about 0900?

I'll bring the corn and the ol' C-DOG banner.
Wednesday sounds good for the fish fry. The dorado and yellowtail are still hitting pretty good.
I'll bring my dive gear, except for the tanks. I'll rent the tanks there.

Ron- Are you still considering cruising to Two Harbors with us on Sunday?

Mike,

I called the general store. I have ordered up 5-10 gallons of ice cream for the kick off BBQ. I will bring some fixens to further kick it up a notch or two. Whip cream, fudge, nuts etc.

We are planning on bringing ambrosia fruit salad.

I think we will get to MDR on Saturday. If we get there early and get launched and everything loaded we may decide to head across Sunday. Or just take it easy and go Monday with the group.

Steve

We will have to send our regrets on attending the Catalina gathering. We are still dealing with some shake down items and have decided to stay in the PNW for a while. Hoping to cruise the San Juans some more before we head south.

Have a great time... Catalina is still on our "must do" list. We'll be looking foward to it another time.

Best wishes,
Jim & Joan B.

Roger, Bob, been having this debate with my son whether to bring 2 tanks or just 1 each. Miles wants to dive 2x per day most days there, one for scenary and one for the bay under the string line or along the shore (..me thinks his energy at home might exceed his energy while there!). Evidently according to the dive shop on shore they said there are no diving restrictions at the Isthmus unlike Avalon. Regardless, I'll have our third party tag along in the raft above with a dive flag over us!

I just decided today to only bring 1 tank each, like you Roger can't see the point in tripping over that many objects for 7 days. This is going to be one heck of a great trip, really looking forward to the R&R and being with the C-Dory 'family' again. Now, where did I put that large bag of potatoes -- hmmm, oh, we haven't bought them yet! --want them as fresh as possible ya know.

J&J- I know how you feel  We missed the Catalina trip last year so we could spend 11 days on the boat cruising the San Juans. Would love to spend more time up there.
Sorry you can't make it this trip, but hey-- you will have fun up there.
When you decide to head back down this way, let us know. We'll be glad to show you around- as time permits for this working stiff.

Jim & Joan, sorry you have to spend your remaining time up there in such 'ugly' surroundings, what a pity. We understand and have been reading/watching your escapades, no sweat, come on down here any time of the year, it's always playtime -- if you have the time that is.

We look forward to meeting both of you and comparing notes 25 to 25 on tips, tricks and features someday. Take care, please continue to keep us posted on your progress with the factory and adventures on the water.

Mike-

Kath and I will bring a lettuce salad and dressing to your Monday night potluck if this item has not already been taken?

We are still trying to get mobilized up here and are struggling to get down there by Sunday afternoon. That is still our plan. However, if we miss that schedule we would be coming down Monday morning. Is it inadviseable to try to go over to Caltalina in the afternoon, like Monday afternoon? Would it be too rough?

Islander- I like that idea of all that ice cream. A very nice touch. Just like that Santa Barbara Yacht club Group beach party!

Steve,

I'd bring 1 tank each and refill on my boat when we're around, especially if you're diving among the boats on moorings. We'll be over Sunday. I've got 3 80's and a 60 to share. Roger has 1 80 reserved. There should be plenty to go around. We're leaving Wednesday.

Jim,

Generally, the westerly wind kicks up aound noon and builds, so you get a pretty good chop, sometimes on top of a 1-3'swell at 8-9 secon intervals. There has also been a smaller south swell at 11-12 secs. The heading to the isthmus begins at 180 or so then changes to 160 after Palos Verdes Peninsula is cleared. It can get pretty snotty in the middle of the 33 mile run.

Bob

Bob, thanks for the info on the tanks, that's kinda the way I figured also.

Hey, just 'when' do you plan to leave Catalina Wednesday, after the fish fry??

Mike,
Katy and I are still bringing dessert, maybe for Wednesday night. And we have an appetizer in mind, too.
