I have no first hand experience with the suzuki kicker, but I've owned several other suzuki products (Geo Metros, Suzuki DR motorcycles and the 50hp Suzuki on the 16 angler) in my opinion: Suzuki is the most UNDER-rated manufacture of combustion motors, forever over-shadowed by Honda in this country. I've known of at least two DR350SE motorcycles (single piston thumpers) that have reached 100K miles without need of a rebuild...thumpers just aren't suppose to do that!

The Johnson 9.9 of that vintage is in fact a Suzuki painted white.
We've had very good success with these motors. As pointed out, the problem of ethanol on carburaters is ever present.
We have seen some of these develop a heavy salt build up where the lower unit bolts to the mid section, to the point of the packed in salt expanding to the point of cracking the metal of the mid section. Regular service of the impellor and remoavla of the lower unit will prevent this.
All of the late model (three star) outboards tend to be cold blooded when first started. Let them warm up a bit and they'll run fine.

Matt is right on all accounts. We have a 2005 9.9 Suzuki. It works great as a trolling motor for salmon fishing and as a back-up to the main. I agree, it is cold-blooded. That's why I try to start it everytime we go out so if we ever need it, it will start right up. It will be interesting to see how the ethanol affects our motors this winter because I believe Twin Bridges has started using gas with ethanol and they usually fill up our tanks. I did put in some blue Stabil the last time I used the boat. We'll see.

It does take a minuet to warm up when first started, I leave the choke out a little for 30 seconds and then push it in and then it runs all day with no complaints. Over the last 40 years I've owned several kickers and this one is by far the best I've owned.
