Just signed up. It will be me and my C-Dory on steroids. Also Mike my neighbor who now owns my C-Dory 25 Clara. Tow guys two boats in the
spiret of gas savings Boys just wanta have fun. By the way we don't know
----- about fishing.

The quota you are talking about is only Chinook, correct? Coho fishing at Neah and Sekiu is IMHO on par with some of the best in the world. Where else can you go fishing for Salmon where you can't even get your line on the downrigger before you hook up with a hot Coho? I've certainly never had that experience inside the Sound!
 
Actually the main limiting factor this year is a very small quota on coho. HOWEVER, in area 5 (just a short 10 mile run or so from Neah Bay) we'll still be able to fish for salmon. Also, fishing on the Canadian side is still an option. Finally, I think the rock cod fishing is well worth the trip as the fish are great eating and you can put 10/person/day in the cooler. It's one of the few kinds of fish in which the catch value can come close to the cost of the gas.

Sorry to hear you are not going to be up for the Neah Bay Fishing Frenzy. We were looking forward to having you stop by, and get some of that well deserved rest you were going to need, before you went out to fill the freezer. We won't be going out to fish, but I had considered going out to maybe get some pictures. Doesn't look like that is happening, have company coming for the weekend.

Well we are 1 week and a few days away from this gathering. There's still time and space to sign up if you are so inclined. So far the quota for salmon still remains so the season may still be open in area 4 when we get there. If not, we can always bottom fish in area 4 and salmon fish in area 5.

For those of you who have not reconfirmed their reservations at the marina, here's a reminder to do so.

Also, when you first pull into Neah Bay, stop straight away at the general store on the south side of the street and get your tribal parking permit (I think it's about $10 maybe $7.50). This is required for anyone with a vehicle on the reservation and you can get a ticket for not having one. I look forward to seeing everyone out there!
 
You can also get the Tribal Permit at the Mini-Mart just past Big Salmon. The permit is good for a year.

Good luck out there guys! I wish I had the boat running so I could join you! Not looking likely though as I need to get the outdrive rebuilt and the motor in.

It's definitely worth taking a crab pot or two. Also, shrimping is open in the ocean most of the year. I tried shrimping once out there with no luck but no I know where the tribes do their shrimping and I think I might try a few prospect pots this year.

I think coho will still be open but I haven't seen any updates on how close we are to the quota. The quota was very low this year but due to high gas prices, effort is down. Also, the last few years, the coho hung outside of the straights until mid-to-late August. A lot of people are too afraid to go outside of the straits to get 'em so to me, the late arrival is great. Fishing outside the straits is usually FABULOUS and typically the ocean is calmer than the straits once you get 1-2 miles away from the entrance. NOTE: I said TYPICALLY, not always. IN August, the open ocean near Neah Bay is easily manageable 4 days out of 5.
 
I am planning to attend the event at Neah Bay . Question, do you need to arrive with all the fishing equipment ( lures, jigs, etc ) that you will need , or can you purchase this equipment out at Neah? If you need to purchase prior to arrival, would someone please advise as to what I need to purchase. I had read in a forum somewhere that there's a problem with locals boarding boats at night moored at Neah Bay. Anyone have a problem with this? Any special precautions one should take while spending the night there? I'd hate to have a confrontation or find my downriggers missing in the morning. And I don't want to have everything I own locked in the cabin at night.
 
I've been out at Neah Bay for over a week each year for the past 5 or 6 years. Never had a problem. In general, if I'm not sleeping on board, I do lock stuff up inside but I do that most everywhere. There are generally many other boats out there with valuable gear left outside that's easier to steel than mine. I don't think it's any better or worse for theft there than most any other place in WA. IMHO there are a number of fisherman who have a very negative attitude towards native americans who tend to overhype theft problems at Neah Bay. My advice is take the normal precautions and just enjoy yourself.

As a kid who raided my dad's cooler for beer (and my neighbor's when I was with the neighbor kids), I can relate. Especially on the reservation which is dry. So I agree with Steve on this one, don't leave coolers full of beer out in the open at Neah Bay (or near my house). :wink:
 
A few other notes:

1) The forecast for next weekend is starting to come into view. At this point we're looking at party cloudy and 66 on Thursday and Friday with a 30% chance of showers and 60 on Sat. and Sunday.

2) The ocean conditions are predicted to be FABULOUS - 3' swells at a 14sec period on Thurs, 1-2' swells with a 12 sec period on Fri., 1-2' swells with a > 12 sec period on Sat. Sunday's predictions won't be available until tomorrow, but I would guess the swells will be low for Sunday too (see this link for swell predictions). So to summarize, the ocean will look basically flat for the upcoming weekend. Wind is predicted to be <10kt's the whole time too. So the ocean SHOULD be easy to handle for those who want to venture outside for fishing or just looking around. Of course, the predictions could change between now and then but it's looking GOOD.

3) The salmon quota appears to be holding out - as of July 27th, about 2/3 of the coho quota remains and about 50% of the chinook quota remains. I'll look at the remaining quota left after this past week when the numbers come out (tomorrow or Tues). Recent reports indicate that the coho are outside the straits in the usual places (table top, swiftsure and blue dot) and that while fewer in number, they are running larger this year. King fishing has been decent also for those who get to the right spots.

So, in brief, it looks like the weather will be good, the ocean conditions excellent and fish to be found. I'm excited! See you all out there this coming weekend.

After much consideration we're going to have to bail out on the fun and fishing. We have decided to cruise the San Juans over the week. However, for those of you brats that are going to make the Bellingham gathering we'll be there at the end of the week. :thup
