08/07 - 08/17 - Neah Bay Gathering

So now you can have a "two-fer" - fish Neah Bay and then end up in Bellingham the following weekend!

This sounds like a great idea.

I've been looking for a CBGT in the NW to hitch my 22 up and come up to, and this combination CBGT/fishing trip would definitely do it.

I'll go ahead and put it on my calendar for 2008!

Thanks for the offer of organizing this great experience!

Joe.

Bringing this back to the top. I just talked to the marina to book my slip and to discuss booking other slips for the Brats. At this point, I let them know that we would be needing about 15 slips (based on who is signed up now). Slip reservations can get tight out there in August as that's prime salmon season. We won't necessarily be guaranteed adjacent slips but she will try to keep us in a group. They don't assign slips until about 1 week before the date. So for now, I need EVERYONE who is planning on coming to call Big Salmon Resort (360-645-2374 - Locally or 866-787-1900 - Toll Free) and book a slip. The marina tends to have a lot of 50A power but less 30A so if you require 30A service, let them know now (and again 1-2 weeks in advance).

I've got a call into the commercial side of the marina to see if I can book a meeting room for Saturday's pot luck. If that doesn't work, we may have to set up tables elsewhere. Fri. night, I'll do a brief fishing presentation - best spots and tactics etc. I haven't figured out where that will take place but maybe at the one decent restaurant in town - the Warm Hut. They have a back room that I will see if I can get for Fri.

BTW - if you don't want to sleep on your boat AND you don't have an RV, the accommodations at Neah Bay are "rustic" (read crappy). The best option is to book a cabin at Hobuck Resort (360-645-2339). I just called there a little while ago and most of the cabins are already booked. There's about 6 left so if you want a cabin, CALL today or soon! I'll have a cabin from Sat 8/9 to Fri. 8/15 as I will have a lot of visitors. There's also RV parking just across the street from the marina.

The next best option for housing off the boat is Roses Bed and breakfast. Several of my friends stay there and like it. Here's info for that place

Rose's Bed & Organic Breakfast (this place is small but OK - at least it's very clean and has good food for breakfast - still a little "rustic" - e.g. the floors are plywood - but overall quite acceptable for almost anyone.
201 Twin Spruce Drive
360-645-2795
Neah Bay WA, 98357
www.rosesbedandorganicbreakfast.com
rose027@centurytel.net

Other places - not highly recommended but they will do if you're not picky AT ALL about the kind of place you stay at (bring sandal for the shower kind of places).

The Cape Motel & RV Park -the motel is not so good, the RV/tent spots have shade OK bathroom facilities - bring some flip flops or something to wear in the shower.
1500 Bayview Ave.
Neah Bay, WA 98357
360-645-2250

Tyee Motel & RV - the motel is a little nicer than the Cape (but still bad). The RV spots have no shade.
1230 Bayview Ave.
Neah Bay, WA 98357
360-645-2223

So - in summary - call now and book a slip and call REALLY soon if you want a cabin.

One more bump to bring this to the top again today. Book your slips now but especially book a place to stay if you won't be staying on the boat. The brats gathering will be the first weekend 8/8 - 8/10, 2008.

We've got 13 total signed up. Please PM me when you book a slip. I've told Big Salmon that most of the group will book within the next week. Those who don't, will get a least one pestering PM/email from me. I don't want anyone to miss out on what should be a fabulous fishing/cruising trip.

This may be a dumb question, but for those of us without trailers how long would it take to go from Edmonds to Neah Bay by boat? Is it advisable? Sounds like fun, but...

Thanks,

I don't know the exact mileage by water but it's probably around 130-150 miles (that's the distance by car). So, you could definitely boat there. How long it would take depends on a number of factors but to be conservative, let's assume that you go at 10-15kts. At that rate, you'd be looking at something between 10 and 15 hours (+/- a little) to get there. Assuming 2.5-3MPG you would burn about 50-60 gals of fuel each way. At $3+ per gallon, it would be a $300 round trip fuel cost.

As to advisable, it depends on what you want to do and on how bad the weather is. There are times when the straits are flat the whole day. On those days, you could up the speed to 20+ and get there easily in a day without getting too beat up. There are other times, when the wind is from the west and kicks up some nice waves as it runs all the way down the straits. In August, on any given day, you probably have a 50% chance of really good (near flat water), 30-40% chance of a <15kt wind and small chop and 10-20% chance of >20kt winds and bad chop.

I just did a quick Coastal Explorer route while waiting here in the surgery waiting room - 103.5 nautical miles from Edmonds to Neah Bay. A long trip, and a challenging route much of the time.

I just got off the phone with the commercial marina operator and we have the meeting room reserved for Sat. evening. The room will seat about 40 at tables, and has a range, a microwave and a coffee pot. The cost is $50. It should be a great place for the pot luck and I'm confident that salmon and rock cod will be on the menu!

Pat-

Get out that trailer and go down and take the ferry to Port Angeles or Port Townsend. Beats getting beaten up, no?

Roger-

Reservations make for the 8th-11th! Can't wait!

Joe. :thup :teeth

I'm going to have to hold off on making reservations at this point. I really would like to be there for the full week like Roger does, but I don't even know if the boat will be ready. So... It'll be wait and see for me. I'll take the chance that I can't get a spot if I decide to go last minute. And I can always anchor out in the bay if I have to.

Joe, the only problem with that is.....to my knowledge the only ferry to Port Angeles is from Victoria, (Vancouver Island). and the ferry to Port Townsend is a bit tenuous as the 80 year old ferrys got pulled from the system because of holes in their hulls. (This has been big news up here ever since they were pulled just before Thanksgiving).

Wish you the BEST on your surgery!

Actually the main problem for what started this aspect of the thread was that Sarge doesn't have a trailer and is considering coming by water from Edmonds. That's quite doable many days in August as the weather and winds are better in August than most other months. It is a long trip but if the wind is down, not really "challenging". BTW - I plotted out in Google Earth and I get about 102.5 nm so Pat's distance estimate is independently confirmed. If you wanted to split it into a 2 day trip, you could put in at Port Angeles which is only 53 nms from Edmonds. That only adds a couple miles overall to the trip and it's almost exactly the 1/2 way point. Port Angeles has a nice marina and plenty to do on shore. Also, that would allow you to get up early and do the trip going west down the straits in the early AM (if there's wind in the straits in August, is usually much calmer early in the AM).

Roger (Dreamer) -- How is the Stellacoom working out as a car and truck/trailer ferry? I am trying to decide whether to take the Lori Ann to Neah Bay on its own bottom or whether to trailer.

Roger (Rogerbum) -- A couple of questions:

1. Parking for truck/trailer -- available, cost, distance to marina?
2. Distance from marina to grocery store?
3. Distance to and quality of (cleanliness) of showers?

Thanks!

Parking for the truck and trailer is available across the street from the marina. In the past it was free but last year I noticed that pay boxes were being installed. They weren't operational last year but my guess is that we will be paying $5-10/day to park this year.

Marina- to grocery store - a couple of blocks. I walk there all the time. The grocery store is more of a general store. E.g. in addition to groceries, they have hardware, tackle, clothing and a lot of marine accessories (bilge pumps, hoses, belts, oil etc).

Shower are available at the marina - within a couple 100 yards of any slip. Two showers, kept pretty clean (better than most motels in the area). They operate on quarters and can be kind of busy. For those with campers, there's a few places near the marina to park. The restrooms at the closest camping areas are worse than the marinas. Hobuck Resort on the ocean side (about 3-4 miles away) has nice facilities.

Warren, The ferry seems to be working well except in extreme conditions, not much freeboard. They transport large trucks on it but you might check their vertical clearance to be safe. These days, the Dodge will cost less for the trip than the TC! Ouch..

Warren,

The showers at Neah are pretty decent. Parking for Truck and Trailer is basically across the street and down a half block.

As for a grocery store... I think it is a few blocks away. Neah is not that big a place!
