08/03 - 08/09 - 13th Annual Catalina Off-Shore Adventure

A little motivation for this summer's gathering at Two Harbors: https://vimeo.com/92488159. We spent the last few days at Little Harbor and Cat Harbor. It was overcast most mornings but beautiful when the sun came out

I am hoping to make this year's gathering with my crew. We spend most weekends at Catalina and would love to see other C-Dory's at the island. Plus, I think we might have the only 24' Tomcat in Southern California, so it would be great to add another "model" to the mix.

24' Tomcat- Oski
22' Cruiser- C-Pelican

If you are launching from LA/OC area think about using Sunset Marian Launch Ramp. I store and launch my boat from there and have had not trouble. Avalon is 26.1 miles away and Two Harbors is closer yet.

Hi All,

I bought overpriced boat wax at West Marine to groom old C-Pup16 so it puts its best social face forward, but there's no wax that can do much to groom my old face... anyway, I'll be glad to hoot n holler Jimmy Buffet style with you laid back ol' Sea Dogs and C-Brats, so I'll see you at MdR. Kimiko would like to greet you on land the night before shoving off, but will not go to sea with her old man. I even removed the passenger seat and reconfigured the boat for my man cave on the waves.

BTW, MdR is now reconstructing the boat ramp entry which is closed. For now, enter the boat ramp from Mindanao Way which is the road you always exited the boat ramp area. It's the road with a loop at Burton Chace Park. Maybe they'll have the regular entrance opened again in August, but I doubt it will be finished any time soon. No work has not started in the month since closing the old gate with chain link fencing. There is no ticket machine at the temporary entrance. A guy is there from 6:00 AM to take your money, $10 a day.

I'm thinking of rechristening C-Pup to name her "Ocean Bronco", or "Paint Can Shaker" or something connecting to the exciting ride I'm use to now. Maybe we can concoct some spiritual ceremony to bless my renamed boat with good luck on high seas.

The fishing should be good this year, with both white sea bass and yellowtail being caught on both sides of the Isthmus. Lots of squid. I fished the back side last weekend with no luck, but other guys caught WSB and Yellowtail.

Jim, if you and Kath are saying later, maybe we can leave the noise of the Isthmus behind and anchor in Rippers Cove east of Empire Landing. It's got the blue water of the Caribbean, nice for snorkeling. You can see the shadow of your boat or dingy on the sand below. There's a pebble beach that's one of the boat-only access authorized camp sites, so there may be camper/kayakers there in August. They're not as rowdy as the bar at Two Harbors. I must be showing my age to criticize drinking and carousing. I like fun... I'll start Ukulele lessons next week so I can strum a tune for you. You might then prefer the rap music and noise of the bar!

Anyone who wants can "friend" me on Face Book. I'm a power user, so you'll get lots of posts. https://www.facebook.com/keith.dager I have some recent pics and videos of C-Pup on the far side of Catalina when I was hunting for WSB at dawn last weekend. It's all "public" so you can lurk and look without friending me if that's your preference.

Be well,
Keith

Me and 1st mate Muffin are planning to make the Adventure In Paradise again, this time joining others out of CIH for a direct cruise downhill to Two Harbors. Hope to introduce a grandson to this craziness, but not sure of his camp schedule. Yeah, I know, life is tough for today's youngsters. Look forward to seeing a lot of old friends. And no Ed!

Fully committed now. Ordered camper canvas for aft cockpit, and had my radar pedestal powder coated as it was showing some wear and tear. Powder coating was only $50.....super deal, canvas deal not so much, $675. But Sealife will have an added cabin. Very cool.

C-Hawk and SEA3PO will be leaving Channel Islands Harbor at 0800 on Sunday, Aug 3 for the 4 hour cruise to Two Harbors. We will be on the Island for lunch.
The new boat ramp is now open at Channel Islands Harbor for use.

Because of a family commitment we will probably joining the group a day late on the 4th. We will be leaving from the Cabrillo Way Marina Dry Boat Storage facility in San Pedro.

For those of you that would like an alternative to Marina Del Rey or Huntington Harbor I have talked to the owners at the boat storage yard and they would be happy to secure your trailers and tow vehicles for a fee (I have forgotten what they quoted me). There are also guest slips available for $25 a night for those who want to come a day early and get an early start.

Call Mike or Paul at Cabrillo Way Marina Dry Storage
310-521-0200 for details

Here is a map I put together to show launching area and storage yard

https://mapsengine.google.com/map/edit?mid=zXM7Er2IwdMQ.kPGqguGR1wDg

1. Launch your boat at the Cabrillo Beach Boat Ramp. I think the fee is $10
2. Drive your rig to storage yard (See map above)
3. Bring boat over to transient dock by boat yard and pack up for Catalina

Might be a little tough if you are single handing for these logistics but this facility is brand spanking new and uncrowded unlike Marina Del Rey or Huntington Beach and absolutely secure.

Can't wait to see you all in Catalina!

Sealife will join C-Hawk and Sea3PO for the straight shot over. Bringing Muffin and grandson Jake.

Is there the traditional beach BBQ Monday night?

Dear All Islanders:

2. Dinner Belle II - John and Robbin
3. Sealife - Mike, Jake, and Muffin
4. SEA3PO - Joel and Susan
5. Marcia Jane - Ken and Marcia
6. Dora Jean - Steve, et. al.

8. C-Hawk - Roger and PJ
9. C-Pup - Keith
10. Oski - Tim, et. al.
11. C-Pelican - Jim, et. al.
12. Happy Hut - ?
13. Helen Pauline -?

We thus have approximately a dozen boats, and 25 or more attendees. Others are welcome to come, just please indicate your intent.

If you are on the above list, and are not coming, please let us know. If you are not on the above list and you are coming, please say so. If Happy Hut and Helen Pauline are coming, please give us your skipper and crew names.

This year, for a variety of reasons, we are having a more informal kickoff on Sunday, August 3. In the past most everyone has met in MDR on Sunday for a get together before we all go over on Monday morning. This year, for good reasons, many attendees are leaving at different times and locations, but most everyone will be together on Monday, August 4th at Two Harbors. Because of the complexity of meeting everyone’s specific different departure needs, we are not formally coordinating the Sunday departure this year.

For ourselves even, we are making a slight change this year. Kath and I are just trying to figure out retirement, we have been gone for the last two months in Prince William Sound Alaska, have overbooked other activity events, and have some family obligations, thus we have not had time to get our own C-Dory act together! Hence, for this year, we are going on the Offshore Adventure with Ron on his Islander, 35 foot Duffy, Lobster Boat. We will leave Channel Islands Marina on Sunday morning, August 3, and arrive in MDR Sunday afternoon. We will then go over to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 4th.

For any of you that do plan to meet at Marina Del Ray (MDR) on Sunday, late afternoon, August 3th, please indicate so. Any of those in the group, who want to, can go out to dinner together on Sunday night at MDR.

We on Islander will proceed to Two Harbors on Monday morning, August 4th, leaving MDR at approximately 7:00 AM. When we get to Two Harbors we will obtain “string line” or ball reservations close to shore, and together. We will coordinate this reservation on the way over via communication on VHF Channel 69.

Most of us will return from Two Harbors on early Saturday morning, August 9th. Again, we will leave Two Harbors at approximately 7:00 AM on that Saturday.

On Monday night, August 4th, we will have group pot luck on the beach. Each boat should plan on bringing a dish to share with the group. Everyone is to bring their own drinks to the beach party Monday.

During the week of August 4th for some of our activities we may have a fishing trip (and an associated victory fish fry), a sightseeing trip to Avalon, a scuba diving or snorkeling trip, a kayak excursion along the shore, hikes around the Island, and/ or a bicycle trip around Two Harbors. On Friday night, August 8th, for those that want to, we usually have a more formal group dinner together at the Harbor Reef Restaurant.

For many C-Dory folks, it will be sufficient to just relax on their boats. This activity includes watching the sun rise, and set, and enjoying the perfect 75 degree weather in flip-flops, shorts, and t-shirts.

Many folks eat breakfast over at the Galley Grill in the morning, and most eat light lunches and dinners on their own boats. Often times there will be mid-afternoon drinks over at the Harbor Saloon or the Banning House Lodge. Some folks often host a happy hour during the week on their boats. There is a good grocery store at Two Harbors where one can buy most anything needed and replenish ice every few days.

Be sure to bring a good functioning tender to this event if you can, as a big part of this venue is getting to, and from, the dingy dock, and cruising around to all the other boats and visiting. A functioning small outboard on the tender really helps. Also, bring quarters for the pay showers, another key to happy Island life!

Regarding food assignments for our Monday night pot luck BBQ on the beach we need volunteers for the following types of dishes:

A. Steaks or tri tip to BBQ – Jim and Kath
B. Spaghetti and meat sauce or some other main dish – need volunteer(s)
C. Garlic bread and aluminum foil - need volunteer
D. Cheese, chips, and dip, etc. for pre-dinner snacks – need volunteer(s)
E. Potato or macaroni pasta salad – need volunteer
F. Green salad and dressing – need volunteer
G. Corn and aluminum foil – need volunteer
H. Dessert (such as ice cream from the store (2 gallons) and cookies – need volunteer(s).

We have 10 or more vessels on this journey. There are at least ten opportunities to volunteer for a food assignment above. For any other vessel(s), please make your own suggested food contributions. Please sign up now for your potluck assignment!
If anyone needs to check in regarding any logistics on this trip they may call me on my cell telephone number (916) 799-0286.

Sincerely,
Jim and Kath

Unfortunately, I will not be able make the trip this year. The biggest reason, is that I have developed some minor electrical problems that must be corrected before I am comfortable making the 65 mile run from Oxnard. The second reason are work commitments.

I will have to enjoy the trip vicariously through the pictures posted.

I do plan on going next year.

Enjoy,
Gratitude (Jim)
