06/13 - 06/14 - Pender Harbour 2014

I have found when using the Canadian Weather Forecasting site it is wise to look at the weather conditions tab. This allows you to click on various locations and see the current wind speed.

Even with a high wind forecast there are often windows when the wind is light and the waves are small but if the actual conditions and the forecast show high winds, hole up and wait for a change.

Amen to that, we always check Bellenas Is. (if you are headed around WG) and Halibut Bank, and for the Puget Sounders, remember the flood tide goes North.

Say Hello to my fellow countryman at Fishermans (& remember Welsh is NOT English)

I have found that the forecasts are very fickle. they usually call for the worst case scenario. if you have time you can normally run with a se on a flood tide heading north in the gulf. an ebb tide will stack her up pretty good. I always listen for the lighthouse reports, chrome, sisters, ballenas and also the sentry shoal weather bouy report. these seem to be more accurate than the forecasts. WG is active today so they should be done playing war games by friday

Yeah it is looking like three days of wind which would not give the water time to calm down. And I agree that the forecast change's as we get closer to the date in question. They also seem to run on the high side of caution, which is why I don't trust them anymore.

We may just hit FH for friday-sunday and then head home. Then again I might change my mind.

Hi all, We had a nice ride up from Sidney today. Are now on G dock at Nanaimo Port Authority. Awaiting decisions by the group of when to head out. Wifi on docks suck....at the library. I will come again in morning to check for plans.

Our US phone plan is showing no service so not sure we can be reached by phone.

This might have been the best day to cross. We're not real comfortable with rough water, so would rather go when good weather.

Exactly what we do. Check the forcast then wind around GS stations. If Entrance is 20 hang out in Nanaimo or be prepared for lumpy conditions. Stow stuff. We crossed yesterday late morning which is usually too late but there is often a short lull between NW and SE winds in the forecast area WG was active so we stayed close to the Island till Ballenas then headed to Texada and on to Secret. WG adds mileage to your passage. Listen to weather 3 to see if it's active or Winchelsea control on ch 10 or call the office at 1-250-468-5080 So we saw 10 knots or less until on approach to Secret Cove when 15SE was blowing. No worries. Dropped the hook in Secret Cove. Still there today. Very nice spot. On up to Madiera Park in Pender tomorrow. All the best to all on your crossings. See you in Pender. So, tomorrow we launch in Blaine, clear customs at White Rock, and head up the mainland side for Smugglers Cover. Hoping it will be a "dock pond" going up!

Hi, yes its looking good now, but work and other duties on Monday have made the trip just a little too long for us. We have to bow out no matter then weather. We will be going to Friday harbor Friday at noon and spend a few days fishing and shrimping then come home Sunday afternoon. Susan has work on Monday now and I have to help people move in to a new house. Sorry. I will call and cancel our dock space in the morning. Have fun everyone.

Well Liz and I are in telegraph harbour had a nice smooth ride over now getting ready to head up towards Nanaimo Sorry to her that Tom you can't. Make it have fun in Fri. Harbor. We are going to stay around up here for a while try our Luck. At some fishing......

Hi all,

We are waiting contact from folks crossing from Nanaimo. I read forecasts with strong wind warnings starting early this evening and settling some Friday afternoon.

We are right next to Trollers on G dock. My phone is 1-208-420-0511....get some reception on occasion. Or hail us on 16. I'll check back on c-brats this afternoon.

Roger and Cheryl

The window of opportunity is open right now. Mainland side is flat calm as far as Ballenas. Winds going light this afternoon then stronger this eve. Me I'd light 'em up and Rock!
We're in at Madiera Park in Pender if any c brats about.
All the best folks.
George

Sernity and C-Cakes just zipped by Nanaimo without picking us up. They're crossing the strait right now. Guess we'll wait until tomorrow afternoon when the wind dies down a little. Any advice for us first timers is appreciated.
