06/11 - 06/13 - Langley, WA 2010

OK (borrowing from Pat), we've got six boats. C-Cakes, Susan E, Mamalena, C-Renity, New Angler and Bambina, with a visit from Salmon Fisher. That means any lurkers who decide spur of the moment to buzz on over quite likely will have moorage.

I made reservations for 12 Friday at 5 p.m. at Edgecliff Bar & Grill (360)221-8899. I can give them a final count Thursday. And if you didn't bring your boat and want to join us Friday night, you're certainly welcome.

Looks like we have a warm weekend waiting for us. Pat, not much rain over there on Whidbey for the next couple days. And if some Brats decide last minute they want to go boating, we'll make room for you I'm sure.

I'll be at Langley early afternoon Friday if all goes as planned, and I look forward to seeing you. We can use the marina's table for snacks and stuff Saturday afternoon if that's what folks want to do. Enjoy your cruise!

Brock,

C-Cakes will be there Friday but I may be too late for the dinner. There is a -2 tide that day and I can't launch from Oak Harbor until 3-4PM so better not count on me to be there by 5:00. Sounds like there is little need for me to bring a table so I'll leave that at home but I will bring the banner and some of the brats supplies.

See you all there Friday.

Well we shoot over here today about 2pm. Very low tide and a nice warm sun at the dock. We to got visit with fred and robbin before they headed out also others that did not stay. After awalk around town he all headed to dinner at "the bistro" very good food. Then a short walk to the biggest single scope ice cream on the island. So me and susan are turning in. Joe and ruth already head off to bed as well as berry and patty. Tana and dan are tied next to brock for the night. As the sun goes down. Another great day

Sorry I didn't get to make this trip. Spent a week in Langly one night last fall, ferrying from Annacortes to Sequim, the long way around due to weather. Had a wonderful breakfast at the Red Apple.

Good luck on your return trips today, be safe and enjoy,

Harvey

Thanks for the great day, Brock! Here's a short video of Joe & Ruth's new boat and the gathering.

Robbin,

Beautiful job on the video. Thanks so much. What a blast :D The flotilla escort into Langley made us feel quite special.

We enjoyed every moment of a fantastic weekend with our wonderful C-Brat friends. At our age all this excitement comes with a price. After arriving home this afternoon, cleaning up the boat, eating an early supper, we fell asleep until 7:45pm. However, we're ready for another boating adventure ASAP.

So good seeing so many of our dear friends and meeting some new C-Brats, too. Brock, many thanks for setting up the Langley CBGT.

See you all at Bellingham next month!

nice video!

we left today at 4. we were waiting for the wind to die off but it never did. Berry left right after us and headed north right in to the wind. Hope he made it back ok. he did not have as far to go as Tawny and Dan but i doubt anyone had a good ride today.

I ask Joe if he was going to leave at O'Dark 30 and he said No they were going to sleep in a little. When he started the diesel and pulled out I grabbed my phone to see what time it was. 5:45, oh yeah sleeping in this morning. They should call the boat Dawn raider.

Hey, 5:45 a.m. is kind of my idea of sleeping in too! Usually when I go walk Baxter, Joe and Fred are out prowling the docks before us...

Sorry we missed this one, we had company Friday and Saturday, and a family event Saturday evening, so it was not to be for us. Next year!

Brock, Thanks for putting this on. Patti and I had a great time. It was a nice, small and intimate gathering (Knowing this crowd I can just imagine the comments that sentiment will bring :) ). Langley is well worth visiting, Duncan the Asst. Harbormaster was really helpful and made everybody's experience better. We saw the folks with the newest TomCat on the water, they showed up unaware of the gathering and joined right in. Nice folks. We met some nice sailors and chatted while they were heating scraping and sanding their nice all-teak boat, chatted some more while they continued to use a hot air gun to help them sand, scrape, and scrape and sand, did I mention how much I enjoy having a plastic boat! Enjoyed seeing the new Susan E. and am I jealous of the Volkswagen sized under-cockpit storage area. With a little work I'm pretty sure they could get a sixteen under there. Brock, together with Fred and Robbin went out in their sixteens to give Ruth and Joe a fitting flotilla escort in so the new R-Matey would feel right at home. What a nice boat! Two more non-group 22's appeared, C-Otter and Last Resort, didn't get to talk to anyone from them but it was nice to see the boats. Last Resort is the 22 where the folks removed the cooking and storage area to put in a head.

I was even more appreciative of the C-Dory on the way home. What was a 17 mile, hour and fifteen minute ride down turned into a two hour and forty five minute, 21 mile adventure getting home. Some of the roughest water I've ever been out in!! The extra miles came from having to tack back and forth across Saratoga Passage to try and keep the short, confused, five and six foot chop quartering on the bow. The extra time came from having to drop to as low as 3.5 Kts. I have a couple of gallons of salt water to drain out of the dinghy today, did I tell you the dinghy was up on the top of the cabin  I had so much water coming over the bow that about a cup leaked through around the top of the center window. There I was wrestling to keep from broaching and out of the corner of my eye I saw the Victoria Clipper come roaring up to pass on my starboard about 30 yards away. I thought their wake would swamp me but C-Cakes handled it well!

But I made it safely home and now have a great story to tell the grandkids...did I ever tell you about the time this giant catmaran tried to sink me????

Holy Cow! Glad we got Little Buddy safely home on Saturday. We complained about the 1 footers... Now I feel really guilty.

The audio on the video isn't right, but the spirit sure is... //robbin

Robbin, cool video! That's fun to watch, and so professional I can smell the salt air. Prepare your acceptance speech(s), as I imagine awards of some sort will follow.

That was fun, wasn't it? Langley has a lot to offer. Cozy, safe but small marina, attentive, very capable harbormasters, and a town quite able to abduct various bills from pockets and purses. And how about that ice cream? I'll long remember desert Saturday night on the Creamery's porch. Happy Brats enjoying oversized mounds of cold calories while two friendly canines worked us like polished lobbyists.

It's sure good to have cousins with a 25' Ranger in the fold. I understand there's now a sign-up sheet to hang out on the new R-Matey. Hurry, as the vessel is limited to just 20 rotating merrymakers.

Saturday was nice and sunny, Sunday too windy! Barry, I know that kind of cruise, and I don't like 'em. Those are the ones we remember most, though. Glad you all made it home safely, and had a good time. I left at 9:45 a.m. and the following sea was a welcome sight. The wind seemed to build from late morning to about noon and blew all day.

Thanks, Brock, for coordinating this fun gathering. It was great weather on Saturday and wonderful to see everyone. Had lunch at the Edge Cliff on the lawn with a spectacular view. Saw the two 16s heading and soon after escorting the new R Matey into harbor. Later, great to visit with Joe and Ruth and they brought cake! Yum! Wow, what cool vessel, love to have one of those in future for cruising up and down the inside passage.

We also got to see and inspect the spacious new 27 C Dory that Susan and Tom acquired. That storage space is something to wish for alright.

Our friends, John and Sandy, had lots of fun and enjoyed meeting everyone. Their first trip on a C Dory and then to meet the Brats, well, they were very impressed.

Hope to see you all again up at Bellingham, but without our boat. We head to Nootka Sound the following Monday with boat in tow to make the yearly fishing trip to Critter Cove.

Patrick and Kim

Sorry we missed this one. Ruth & Joe that boat is a thing of beauty! I'm sure you will enjoy her thoroughly for yrs to come.

M and I changed our plans at the last minute. Instead of launching @ Everett as planned, we trailered up to Cornet Bay and ran out to Stuart for the night. Had a fantastic dinner of salmon & scallops while on the hook @ Prevost w/ 13 other boats. Next morning we did a little hiking/site seeing & spent time talking w/ a nice couple from Anacortes who had a Sea Sport and three retrievers.

We left just after lunch so we'd hit the incoming tide @ Deception. What a ride. Once we made the turn out of Thatcher and really entered Rosario the bouncing began, especially from Allen Island south. It was good for M to experience it, and she handled it with her usual grace...and sarcasm. She said she "doesn't mind the front to back" (pitch) but dislikes the "side to side" (roll) of the boat.  Combine them like yesterday and...

Next year, if plans permit.

I passed the Victoria Clipper III around 4 PM on Sunday going into Swinomish Channel. She was only making about 10 knots, looked to be running on one engine, and I didn't see any passengers on board. Not sure why it would be going through Swinomish Channel...

By the way, we had a pretty smooth ride from Sylvan Cove to Twin Bridges Sunday afternoon. The flood was giving us about 4 knots of extra speed through Guemes Channel. We had some pretty big tides over the weekend, and I'm sure that didn't mix well with the wind in places on Sunday. Glad everyone made it home safely and had a good weekend.

Robbin,

Great job on the video, you could make some money doing one for each of the C Brats! Of course, I have to give credit to Fred for his fine job of driving for the on the water action shots. Boy, that R Matey can go.
