06/03 - 06/05 Eastern Shore, Maryland gathering

We have only one word for the plans for this Gathering -- WOW!! Thanks for the crab cake recipes, the offer of a yard for visiting, the info on sights to see -- let's see -- if we calculate correctly, we can see about half the sights mentioned in three weeks!!! Wonderful! And Robbie, Pat and Patty might make it from the left coast -- What a treat!! Sure, Tom, if folks are interested we can certainly share some CD cruising tales, but with so much going on maybe this will be with small groups over some brew and crabs. Whatever you wish. And Otter Tom, what a great offer! Hope Pat and Patty or Robbi take you up on it. WOW!!

Well, Pat and Patty are striving mightily to take Tom up on his fantastic offer - and if Robbi and her twin (could there really be another one, JUST LIKE ROBBI?????) want to accompany us, well, she KNOWS they are more than welcome, from two old Vikings to another (Robbi will of course know what that means, the rest of you, we will leave you to guess!) Yahoo, Eastern Shore, here we come!

It would be hard to beat Sandy Point State Park as a place to launch, especially if you are not familiar with the area. Easily accessible, great ramps, plenty of parking, and located on the western shore just (a few feet, as a matter of actual fact) north of the Bay Bridge, which is a landmark hard to miss.

I had actually found the Sandy Point State Park before I posted the question, but had two concerns: 1) do they allow overnight trailer parking and 2) do they allow pets at the launch area. When I went to the State Park website, they said pets not allowed in the park. I agree with the launch site looking ideal as it appears to be right across the bay from the gathering location. Anybody have any insights to the two concerns?

Jack

OK, Here is the update.

We are confirmed at Lankford Bay Marina for Friday, June 3, Sat. June 4, and Sunday, June 5. Check in time is noon, check out, 11am . Their web site is......www.chesapeake-bay.com/lankfordbay

I spoke with their manager, John Groves, today. All reservations have to be made individually, by credit card. Telephone is 410 778 1414; FAX is
410 639 2547; email: lankford@intercom.net

Identify yourself as C.Dory Gathering/Tom McHugh,"fleet captain" (their term, not mine).

Dockage is $1.75 per ft., per night. Electric: 30 amp $5.00per night
Children, fine, but supervised; Dogs, fine, but must be on leash at all times.
Family style marina...we can reserve the pavilion for time we want it for meals, etc. Marina has a quiet time policy after 10:pm..
There is a swimming pool.

Though the final list is not needed until 2 weeks before the event, it would be good to start making the reservations asap. There are lots of people who like to come to this place for group cruises.

I told John that we would have somewhere between 8 and 15 boats.

tom/terraplane

ps. I will check on the rules at Sandy Point State Park for launching and pets.

El and Bill on Halcyon:

Bill, you had inquired about vehicle and trailer parking in the North Carolina area, and I want to let you know that the newest C-Dory dealer, Mobile East Marine, would be glad to have you park your rig inside their fenced area while you're doing some cruising. They can also provide transportaiton to Oriental, New Bern, or Beaufort. If you're interested, call them in advance at 252 745 5615, and ask for Carrie Wooster.

David

David --

Thanks for the info. We'll give Carrie a call as soon as we get into cellular coverage -- we're home in Nelson, NV now, and our ghost town is a little shy of technology -- in fact, these 24 folks (not counting the ghosts) are a little shy of just about everything. Police came to town the other day on a complaint, and got run out of town by some locals. They may barricade the paved road to town, but since most of the folks here cruise in and out on the gravel, it won't make much difference. If you haven't checked out our home town, you might want to click on:

Thanks again for checking on that for us -- we'd like to meet the new dealer and this will give us a perfect excuse as well as a good launch point.

Well, just 104 days until the Eastern Shore Gathering: "Crabs,Kids, Dogs, and Dorys"

When and if you firmly commit to coming, it would be helpful for me to know the number of people on each boat...including kids and dogs!

Also, if there are any special needs for anyone.

Yesterday , an 84 year old friend, a retired oysterman here in Rock Hall, Emory "Pie" Edwards said he'd be happy to stop by and talk about the old days...if he could get a ride on "one of those boats."

tom/terraplan

WOW! 15 boats so far - and Bearh hasn't signed up yet....Bruce, are you all coming, at least for a day or so?

Tom, you've really started something here!

Tom:

Marcia and I will be there (2); will leave the Airedales home this time.

I'm not sure if I'll be there Friday night or not because Marcia has her vet conference in Baltimore until Saturday morning. If the weather looks good, I'll be there Friday and return to Baltimore to pick up Marcia Saturday.

Looking forward to meeting everyone!

Oh my goodness, it is looking like I may make this gig after all. My twin is soooo excited.  Just have to work on a few more details. (Pat, she a Viking too!) If we come we would need a place to pitch a tent. Any suggestions? Or maybe the B@B that is within walking distance of the marina would work out. Is any one familiar with it? Any info would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Robbi

OK, so things are beginnning to jell. 97 days to the gathering.."Kids, Crabs, Dogs and Dorys"

It would help if you would sign up on the list so i can keep count.

There is no set plan, so if you have ideas, let me know.

I increasingly think that El and Bill should talk to us about the ten thousand things they have learned about these boats, these engines, and how to live on a 22' boat and stay married!!

I have invited Cutter to come over since so many of us are their customers.Of course, it is a summer weekend of work for them at the marina. Maybe someone will come.

I have had a call from our local newspaper about this gathering..We might even get press coverage.

To The Twins:

I can offer camping space on our field, with a hot shower in the house...or I am sure you can find accommodation on a boat...The closest BandB is about four miles away, and a bit pricey.

Wow, this is really sounding like fun. Shall we have t shirts.?

tom/terraplane

Tom, The offer of the camping space sounds wonderful. Thank you so much. We will know in the next few weeks if this gets put together. I'd say it is looking good. :D Robbi

Robbi,

My wife says I was not very gracious. We can find you a place to stay if you need it. A real room! If you'd prefer to camp, we have the space, and if you'd like to stay on a boat, i'm sure that could be arranged too.

Y'll come!

tom

Tom, Your offer is very gracious, and my sister and I are very appreciative. I think that we would like to tent it. We have not spent time camping together in some years, and we will enjoy spending time together in her new tent. Thanks again. Still working on the particulars. Fingers crossed. Robbi

Hello All,

John A Groves at Lankford Bay Marina says he is already getting some of you to call in...great.

So far, we have about 18 boats, with interest. I realize that may change due to personal plans, etc...but it is a great beginning.

On March 19 a few of us who are local will meet ot talk about specific plans...and we want to keep things loose, with lots of options. A few things I will have to know:

Who will be taking slips at Lankford Bay
Who will prefer to anchor out nearby
Any special needs...
How many on each boat
How many need a launch ramp
Approx arrival times for everyone..

No need to do all this now, but be thinking.

For those who will anchor out if any , we will arrange one or two boats to run out for "taxi" service to the marina for dinner, drinks, music, etc.

Of course, you may end up having your own party, with all of us coming out for a nightcap!

"Come on Sally, get your red dress on...."

tom, terraplane

Tom,
Pat and Patty Anderson from out west look like a go to attend the festivities and then take a leisurely cruise on Otter from Lankford to Alexandria, VA the following week. I need to work out logistics some logistics with them, but Otter will need a place to launch, probably on Saturday, and I will probably be on hand (possibly with Kathy and / or one of our bambinos) for Saturday night. I will call the marina for a slip. I can also bring my zodiac and small outboard if that would be helpful for ferrying people at anchor. Odd to be thinking about such things as a 10-inch snowfall approaches!
Regards,

Tom/Otter

This is exactly the thinking i need to help us figure out the logistics of the event...Thanks for your input.

I just got back from playing a concert,...32 degrees, predicted five inches of snow tomorrow, but I'm thinking June.

And anyway, compared to our left coast and Alaska friends...we are wimps...I'm constantly amazed and inspired by their joy in dealing with seas, fogs, storms, and cold..

Let's make this first gathering a great one.
