05/18 - 05/20 - 2012 Friday Harbor CBGT

We have arrived in Anacortes from Montana. With luck we should have Salty in water by tomorrow afternoon. We are very new C Dory owners and would love to have a buddy boat to accompany us to Friday Harbor from Anacortes on Friday. We have been out but just need a little moral support. We are just not comfortable going it alone.

Hi Julie and Craig,

Anacortes is a great town. The run from Anacortes to Friday Harbor took us about an hour an 15 minutes. I would imagine there will be other Brats leaving from there, but if the timing doesn't work for you, the routing is: head north from Cap Sante (if that is where you'll have the boat) 'till you can see to the west; go west across Rosario Strait (it can be rough if tide current and wind are opposing); go west between Blakely Island and Decatur Island (through Thatcher Pass); NW around Lopez Island; SW down Upright Channel (between Lopez and Shaw Island); by the time you are at the south end of Shaw, look to the west and you can see Friday Harbor (well, there is a small island directly in front of it, but you will see buildings and boats). We ran about 16 knots most of the way. The only issue we had was keeping a close watch for logs in the water. I know the folks here are used to that, but just a heads up.

There are plenty of nav aids along the way.

It can be a little intimidating the first time, but once you are running, and keeping track of where you are, it is breathtakingly beautiful.

See you in Friday Harbor.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Craig and Julie,
Kate and I and Kitty (Nikko) will be leaving from Guemes Island as close to noon as we can. If you come out of Cap Sante Marina and head Magnetic North you are heading right for our home and launch site.
425 922 9311 (C) C-Brats usually communicate on 68. Love to be your guides.
Guemes Map

We live where the number 43 is. Cooks Cove.

Patti and I will be launching from Oak Harbor tomorrow around 3PM. We will be monitoring 68 and would be happy to buddy up with anyone wanting company for the trip.

 No worries, Pat. I wasn't making any commitments I couldn't fill. Just passing on some history in a funny way. I think we can all provide our own libations. Your generosity in the past was appreciated!

For those coming north from Puget Sound, my humble advice:

With the 10-20-knot southerly forecast, get an early enough start to get to Edmonds around 10:00. That way you're catching ebb flowing north, with the wind. By the time the flood kicks in, you're in Saratoga Passage, catching the flood flowing north, with the wind.

It's a great theory, anyway...I never seem to make it work, though. :-)

Hi Barry:

Watching the forecast and predicted wave heights, we fear we may have to come by ferry. If that's the case, is there a gate code we should use to get down to the dock?

Looking foward to seeing you all this weekend.

No gate code... well, no gates. One of the liveaboards I visited with this morning said (regarding gates), "It's an island - where are they going to go? If someone steals something or robs a bank, they have to wait for the ferry to get off the island."

I have a new phone and can't remember that navigation app for the puget sound. I know it cost 14.99. Barry or anyone?

Marine forecast, looks good to me, you were not planning on being out late tonight, now, were you?

So, being newbies with a grand 12 hours under our belt, we were looking at the Puget Sound marine forecast and thinking it could be out of our skill zone. But Tom kindly rang me to explain the difference w/ west vs east side of Whidbey. Given that we are planning to go thru La Conner and around the backside of Guemes to Pevine Pass...we agree that it's probably looking good.

It would be nice to have a 19ft represented this weekend!

Thanks for all the support :)

Amy

Found it. It is navionics but I could not get it to come up that way. but comes up under Marine usa and canada. Thanks!

Amy if you have a iphone or android down load "Pirate buoys" This way you will have real time wind numbers for the buoys with just a click or two. I have found that the NOAA weather forecast operate on a worse case out look.

You also have to look at the area that you are going to. I also have Marine Weather on my phone. The puget sound is broken up into several areas and the names do not always give the best description.
so norther inland waters including the san juans runs from just north of everett up to and threw the san juans. Which is just insane as it includes 5 different and separate areas that can have completely different winds. thats why i like the Pirate bouys real time numbers for the different bouys.
Puget sound and hood canal includes the hood canal of course but also the sound from everett to olympia??? Yeah I think there maybe more then one wind condition going on there. You get the point. NOAA forcast are just tools to help decide but are not the one tool. I never make my go no go decision until late the night before or even the morning of. I look at NOAA, the buoys, and how the wind is trending at the buoys. Look at the buoys 12 hour history.

I have seen "East entrance us water straits of juan de fuca" calling for a small craft warning, as it is right now, and the wind at hien bank blowing 20knots but the wind at smith island only blowing 5 knots ( both are in the same forecast area)

ok so wind at smith is blowing 5.1 RIGHT NOW but they are calling for a small craft tonight and then winds of 5 tomorrow morning again.
