05/18 - 05/20 - 2012 Friday Harbor CBGT

Is anyone leaving from around Seattle? We're debating about whether to trailer to Anacortes/Bellingham/Coronet Bay, or to just leave *really* early to go through the locks and head out.
I'm on Lake Union, and since I still don't own a truck capable of towing my boat, I will go out through the locks and up along the inside of Whidbey Island.

I never aim for an early start, especially if I have passengers aboard; I just let it take the time it's going to take. The locks can take as little at 35 minutes (I've never cut it shorter than that, but it's theoretically possible). Or it can take 2 hours or more. Once free of the locks, if the water is mostly smooth, I can make it to Friday Harbor in under 4 hours. If it's very bumpy, it can take 6. :-(

My preferred route for crossing Rosario Strait is Deception Pass to Lopez Pass, UNLESS the forecast suggests a brisk westerly wind shooting out of the Strait of Juan de Fuca against a strong ebb out Deception Pass. I may be picking up Julia and Kiera at Cap Sante in Anacortes anyway, so I'll probably take the Swinomish Channel. If we're early, a stop in La Conner for coffee & pastry is always a nice diversion.

But the entire way...I just let it take whatever amount of time it needs to take.

Barry,

Did you do your weather dance a week early. Looks like this weekend is going to be the weekend to cross the Strait of Juan. Would it work to do it, (go) this weekend and then go into time warp mode and hang out til next weekend and come home on the same water weather :?: :?: :?:

Just a little wishin' and hopin'

Well, I was looking forward to making this one, seeing old friends and meeting Dr. Bob in person. Unfortunately, business intervenes.

On Friday night while you all are on the dock eating drinking and visiting, I'll be coming back from Fresno, bouncing along at a low altitude on a turboprop, in an uncomfortable seat, thinking of all of you. If I sound like I'm feeling sorry for myself, I am. I'll miss seeing all of you. I'm hoping to be at the July get together.

We are attending with the 12 footer. Do you think it might fit side tied in front of a couple of 22s or should we plan on getting a slip for it? Width is 60in max. We will launch Friday and not pull it back out until Sunday.

Also, I recently purchased a hydraulic hitch scale.

I always wished I had one and it has been useful for adjusting my newest trailer and testing toungue weight with various load configurations.

I would be happy to bring this to the gathering complete with shipping box so another Brat could take it home and test their own trailers and experiment and just ship it back to me when done. We could ship it around to other folks after that as well. It's not the kind of thing I need all the time but simply nice to use as toys evolve.

Just post here if anyone is interested.

Greg,
on the inside of "H" dock all the way to the end toward the walkway there is a small wedge shaped area. Google Friday Harbor map and you will see it, there are also a couple of other nooks where we should be able to fit 12 footer.

For anyone launching from Bellingham (Squalicum Harbor), the fee for one launch and one retrieve is now $7.00. Be sure to place your receipt in the window of your vehicle. No charge for parking your vehicle and trailer. However, if you plan to park for more than five days, please check in with the port office and they will issue you a parking pass (no charge). The port office is located at 722 Coho Way. Phone # 360-676-2542. I think their hours are from 8am to 8pm?

Cost for overnight moorage on the guest dock is 75 cents a foot.

PM me for the code for Gate 9 .....that's if you're staying overnight on P Dock.

Gregg,

Great to hear you'll be there with the 12. Are you thinking of launching at John Wayne  I'd be happy to cross with you if you are. AS to moorage at FH. There is also a dingy dock and I'm pretty sure the 12 footer would qualify as my dingy. Just a thought.

Les,

Absolutely! We'd be very happy to see you...and the boat. We will have all of H and half of G docks, you'll see all the C-Dorys. Hope you can make it.

Thisaway left San Franscisco South Park Marina at 6 AM en route to Friday harbor--the land part started at about 11 AM (2 hours to de rig the boat to trailering mode and wash it down). We are just South of Oregon border currently (Sunday Night).

Well, I've got about 20 new, suitable for framing, C-Brat name tags made up for Friday Harbor. I see a lot of first timers on the sign up list and we would love to have you properly identified so we can greet you!

PM me with your names, Boat name, model and color along with your home port. We'll do the rest. Before Thursday please

Roger

OK, Here's the detail on the FH gathering: We have 45 slips reserved. We have all of "H" Dock and at least half of "G" dock. To get to those docks approach the marina, find the customs station about dead ahead and then look to the right, you will see a small kiosk on the end of a breakwater with a sign giving 66 as their operating VHF frequency. Enter the protected area there leaving the kiosk to your starboard and look to the right. You will see "H" dock. The kiosk is on breakwater "A". As you approach please contact the harbormaster's office on VHF 66, just tell them you are with the C-Dory group. They will not assign a specific slip. Take any open slip on "H" dock. After "H" is full new arrivals head in the same direction but pick a close in slip on the right side of "G" dock as you are heading in. There will be other Brats there to help you. As usual the Port of Friday harbor is very glad to have us there; normal moorage is 95 cents per foot, they charge us only 70 cents per foot. Once you are moored please walk up to the Harbormaster's office to register and pay for moorage, other brats will give you directions. Each slip has 30A power and potable water. There is an extra cost for shore power. C-Cakes will be moored somewhere near the middle of "H" dock. We have a dinner planned for Friday evening at "Downriggers" a nice restaurant within easy walking distance of the marina. It is up to you whether you join us for dinner. There are several nice restaurants within walking distance, Downriggers is the only one able to handle a group our size. No one will fault you if you choose another option.
There are several good breakfast options, all within walking distance, folks just decide what they want to do, there is no organized breakfast or lunch on Saturday. The Friday Harbor West Marine store hosts us for coffee and donuts at about 10:00 and they give brats 10% off most stuff. Some people head out to fish, others cruise the general area, others walk around Friday Harbor, there is a farmer's market, an interesting Whale Museum, and a very nice local bookstore. You can also rent a car, scooter or two person scooter to tour San Juan Island. English and American Camps are worth a visit. You can also get to Roche harbor by auto/scooter. Many of us just hang around and gossip. David McKibben on Anna Leigh and I will be doing Coast Guard vessel safety checks throughout the weekend, just find us if you want a VSC. Saturday is a good day to look over everybody's boat and to steal their good modification ideas. The potluck will begin about 5:30ish on Saturday and will be on breakwater "A" at the end of "H" dock. There is no power on the breakwater but food is usually devoured before it has a chance to get cold. It is a true potluck, no assigned dishes, after the potluck we usually have boat christenings courtesy of rev Jim or Asst Rev. Dave. If you would like your boat christened, (A good idea, Neptune gets picky), bring some greenery from your home area and libation of your choice then watch while your friends pour all kinds of stuff over the bow of your baby  Most people plan to arrive noonish on Friday and depart by noonish on Sunday. There are always impromptu flotillas heading out to any of several great cruising areas, just ask around and don't be shy

Daydream and the R27 Amy Marie are planning on spending Thursday night on P Dock, if that is full we will motor on over to Chuckanut Bay, and in either case head for Friday Harbor Friday morning. We will be monitoring VHF 16/68, I know some other folks have indicated they would like to cruise over together. PM me if you would like my cell to be sure we can hook up.
