05/18 - 05/19 - Friday Harbor Gathering

Hi Patti and Barry,

I see there are 50 boats signed up for Friday Harbor. Is this a record? How much space is assigned to our group? Do late comers raft up?

Martin.

Martin, Yes it is more than we have ever had sign up before, (42 was the record). I keep the harbormaster updated and they expand our space over to G dock just across from H. We also have the whole inside of the breakwater so there will be enough room. We are really looking forward to this.

VHF call in to Port of Friday Harbor is on channel 66.

Just a reminder about the auto reply radio check in the area. It is on VHF 28, and I have used it from Sequim Bay and gotten acceptable results. Just listen, if it is quiet, key up on 28, say your boat name and radio check and then listen for your recorded voice and a short safety message.

Also, the fuel there is now, E-10. Filled there last weekend. They said there is no more non-E gas available in the islands.

We were on the water last weekend and coming back to port the boat was suddenly grabbed and shaken  we quickly learned it was the sea god Poseidon who had discovered that neither Rev Jim nor Asst Rev Dave would be at Friday Harbor to do boat christenings/renamings.
I was immediately told that I would be temporarily designated as second class asst rev. for this gathering and was thereby authorized to perform the appropriate ceremony honoring Poseidon and christening any boat so bold as to be daring to go out on his seas without a proper naming ceremony. Therefore we will have christenings for any boat needing Poseidon's protection. All you need is greenery to help the boat to come safely back to land, appropriate libation for Poseidon, and good cheer. Please drop us a PM if you would like a christening.

It is a proven fact that you are treated like royalty in Friday Harbor if you're wearing your official C-Brat name badge. So, if you have one, bring it along.

If you don't have one yet, you're in luck! If you'll PM or e-mail me the following information, I'll have one for you and each of your crew waiting for you.

Your Name(s)
Your Screen Name
Boat Name
Boat Model (ie 22 Angler)
Boat Trim Color
Home Town and State

Just wondering is anyone coming to FH CBGT might have a recent Raymarine C series MFD update on an SD chip. I just had the pleasure of contacting Raymarine tech support and being told I needed to do a hard reset ---> ouch. So goes all the setting, waypoints and routes. OK, I learned my lesson, now I need to find a Skan Disc chip and get the most recent (or a recent) version, since I just went back 6 years.

If you are coming and can bring a chip, I would be much obliged.

It's almost here! If you haven't yet signed up for Friday Harbor on the Event Signup list, please do so. We've got 50 boats so far, so it'll be a great group for swapping ideas and stories!
We're making a handout listing Boat Name, People First Names, Home Port (including state!) and Site Name so we'd like to make it as accurate as possible.
Dinner at Downrigger's Restaurant is at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 17th.
Barry on C-Cakes and David on Anna Leigh will be doing Coast Guard Auxiliary Vessel Safety Checks for those who want a 2013 sticker.
Potluck around 6ish on Saturday, May 18th on the breakwater dock at the end of H dock. Bring your own chairs and a dish to share. This is TRUE potluck and we never run out of food!
Wild Blue's Jim will provide musical entertainment.
Boat christenings by Assistant, Assistant, Substitute Reverend Barry after the potluck for any boat who wants one.
That's all the scheduled activities. As you know, our gatherings are like herding cats. So plan for the unplanned!
See you soon! Think sun and warm!

Hi, you all, See Saw is now in Portland, having traversed the SW USA to southern Ca and headed up the gorgeous Pacific coast, on land of course. We plan to be in the area of Sequim on Mon or Tues. My question is, is it reasonable for us to launch with you all there at Sequim to make the crossing to Friday Harbor, or should we find another place to launch that would be better for our 16' as we'll be going slower than most of the bigger boats? Will there be other 16s going out from Sequim or other folks who don't care to go so fast?

I just realized how many boats there are going to be at the Friday Harbor Gathering during the same time we planned a visit to the Anacortes Trawlerfest. We plan to buy a boat early next year and C-Dory is our leading boat from the online research so we are thinking about changing our plans to come to the gathering instead of Trawlerfest to be able to actually see some C-Dorys.

We live in Fort Worth, Texas and owned a boat for a short time 25+ years ago. Our plans are to retire early next year and buy a trailerable boat.

Maybe a silly question, but what would be the best way to meet people and be able to see a variety of different C-Dorys?

Is the marina where the boats are gathered obvious?

If you are coming to Friday Harbor, you will need to take the Washington State Ferry from Anacortes (Friday Harbor is on San Juan Island, an hour and 10 minute ferry ride from Anacortes, and you need to get in the ferry line an hour or so early if you are driving on). You don't have to bring your car, unless you are planning to drive around San Juan Island; it will save you some $$ to walk on the ferry.

The marina is right next to the ferry landing. The gathering is all the way to the other side of the marina from the ferry landing. Get off the ferry, turn right, walk on the sidewalk by the marina, when you get to the marina office and main pier, walk down the pier. Take the first left, then follow that dock all the way out to H Dock. It is WAY easier than those instructions might have you believe.

If you are planning to spend the night, definitely make reservations. Friday Harbor is a tourist destination, hotel rooms are not inexpensive... but, at the time of the gathering, it is not the height of the tourist season.

You will meet plenty of friendly C-Dory people. Ask, and you will see a variety of boats and get the lowdown on what they've done to personalize the boats for their use.

You won't be the only Texas folks there - my wife and I are from the Tropical Tip (South Padre Island/Port Isabel area). The locals are friendly, but be sure to bring warm clothes... it is brisk by Texas standards. The 10 day forecast is calling for daytime highs in the low 60s during the gathering.

There is nothing formal about the FH C-Dory gathering, especially compared to Trawler-Fest. No dealers showing boats, no seminars... but, if you are interested in what C-Dory life is all about, this is THE place to discover that.

For further reference, my wife and I retired early about 7 years ago, ordered our C-Dory, and have been traveling all over with the boat. We feel it is a great size to trailer and cruise. Coast to coast to coast; Florida, California, the Gulf Coast, the Pacific Northwest, the Erie Canal, Desolation Sound (BC Canada), Lake Powell, Yellowstone Lake... we will be spending 4 to 5 months on ours this summer.

Come join us and see what folks are doing. No entry fee, just bring yourselves and a spirit of adventure.

Best wishes,
Jim B.

Total newby question here.

Is everyone who comes able to hook up to shore power?
Also, by reserved does it mean that each is docked in its own reserved slip?
What happens to the extra boats which come unexpectedly?

Redbaronace, It's best if they know you're coming. See the "event signups" at the top of the home page. Click to join the group and you're signed up. Each boat goes into a numbered slip with power and water nearby. With this large a group, unexpected boats may end up in a less desirable spot, so sign up!

idraker, Most of the Sequim Flotilla are 22s I believe. It's about 20 miles of open Straits to Cattle Pass. I'd keep an eye on the Marine forecasts to see if I'd try it in a 16. Early morning is usually better as Harvey says but it isn't always that simple. If you decide to try it, the Sequim squad is having an early dinner at the Black Bear Diner at 4:00 PM Thursday.

I confirmed that we have some 50 boats coming with the Asst. Harbormaster who works with us. We have worked with him many times before and he assures me that they will have space on H and G docks for all of us. The boats arriving after H is filled will just be over on G. It is not far.
There is no need to call for individual reservations, just call in on the VHF as you are arriving, tell them you are with the C-Dory group and they will point you over to us. There is almost always a Brat to help you find a slip and dock.

And...a reminder to everybody, bring something to sit on for the potluck.See you next week.

We have just made plans to attend the gathering. We plan to attend the Friday night dinner and most of the day Saturday (unfortunately, we have to leave on the last ferry back to Anacortes to get back to Seattle for an early morning flight)

I PM'ed Roger and signed up on the events page. If there is anything else we need to do, let me know.

We can't wait to meet the folks we have come to know online over the last few months.

Welcome aboard Martha and Mitch. We look forward to meeting you. Come aboard Kerri On if you like to see how we do things. George and Carolyn

Barry, are they putting us on both sides of h dock? I thought that the outside of 'H" was monthly rentals. There are only 27 spots on the inside of H dock. It would be great to have the outside of H dock also.
