05/18 - 05/19 - Friday Harbor Gathering

Normally I am all for volunteering other people to take charge of social events but this time Susan has volunteered us. We will agree to talk to you about it at Friday harbor. I am assuming that Barry is handling it this year and You and us will take over for next year??

Greatly appreciate the assist Tom and Susan! You two are real good people.

Hopefully, weather issues will not become a major concern preventing us from getting across the Straits for upcoming FH CBGTs and then you guys can just relax since you are already darn busy.

Also hope you guys don't get burnt out though since you already have the La Conner CBGT and also co-ran the SBS CBGT.

Thanks again,
Dan, Tanya, and Hannah on C-Renity

Just for the record. Roger ran the boat show event. I just helped out a little, less then I planned too, and drove the van. Roger gets all the credit for that gathering, not us.

La conner is easy and now that I have done it should be easier this year. Being back up for FH again should not be hard.

Anyone in Canadian waters north of Nanaimo thinking about going to the Friday Harbour Gathering? I'm thinking about it but don't want to tackle the trip on my own.

Martin.

I just checked and it is almost 200 km to Victoria and then some more to cross Haro Strait etc. Have you thought about trailering down to Victoria or Sidney and then heading over?

This time of year I would consider towing to at least Nanaimo if not Sydney and running over from there. It would be a short run from sydney of about a hour maybe a hour and a half. You know I will have to look it up. After 2 years of running the 27 I dont think in "22" anymore. You can check customs at friday harbor or Roche harbor.

I thought about some trailering, but I'm not a fan of that. My truck (3.4 V6) is a tad on the light side for long distance hauling. Ok for the couple of hundred yards I live from the Comox boat ramp. Plus there's the headache of parking up the truck and trailer.
By boat is much more fun. Depart Comox Thurs morning, overnight in the Gulf Islands, arrive Friday Harbour Fri afternoon. Just gotta find if someone else local is interested in the trip.
I threw this message out there in case there is someone else in similar circumstances who would like to go, but not solo.

Martin.

If you are going to make the run down think about stopping at Silva bay on the out side of Gabriela Island. We stopped there on the way to your gathering last year. Nice little marina about half way down. On the outside and nice and quite. From there you can run down the strait or tuck back into the islands if the weather picks up. Or think about winter cove on saturan island. One of my favorite spots.

Martin, I agree with Tom - Winter Cove is about as close as you can get and still be in Canada, and then you can clear customs in at Friday Harbor. Comox all the way to Friday Harbor is probably a bit more than I would care to do in one day - it would be a long day unless you were running crazy fast like Tom does! Cabbage Island is another nice spot. I cannot say enough how much we enjoyed the Comox CBGT. Look forward to seeing you!

Thanks Tom and Pat for your support and encouragement. I really enjoyed the Comox gathering, meeting a bunch of Brats and making new friends. I am envious that a lot of you meet up together on a regular basis in the San Juans and surrounding cruising grounds. I often look at the albums of gatherings and see who I can identify.

Another Brat close to where I live saw my message and is now thinking of going together in tandem. So maybe it's a possibility after all.

I have been to Silva Bay before Tom, nice spot. Winter Cove looks interesting, but no gas.

Let the good times roll.

Martin.

Thanks for letting us know. Looks to be another big one. All is set up, now its a little too early for the sun dance but I'm getting ready. Don't forget to signup on the event signup sheet. That way you can see who all is coming and it's easier for us to keep track too.

We will not be making this Gathering, that we have looked so forward to, due to JoLee having back surgery scheduled for this coming Friday with an extensive recovery period following. If all goes well we hope to make the 2014 Friday Harbor Gathering on our way to Alaska next year instead.

We are really excited to make our first c-brat gathering! If anyone wants to travel over together, we're thinking of launching early friday at twin bridges or possibly Cornet Bay. We could meet up!

I am really looking forward to this CBGT. It will be my first. And with having a 7 month old son, a welcomed vacation. I'm an old first time dad at 41....it's a young man's game apparently.

The only thing I am not looking forward to is the amount of money and project time I'll most likely be spending after Friday Harbor. I know I will see some great things on other people's boats that I'll just need to copy.

It would be fun to make the crossing with a few other boats. I'll be in Port Ludlow / Townsend for a few days leading up to Friday Harbor. Maybe I can join the boats heading out of Sequim?

Rob

You are certainly welcome to join us leaving from Sequim. So far it will be SleepyC, BullFrog and the Lighthouse Express.

SleepyC recommended the following to us:

Be advised, it is best to leave early to avoid the morning winds. (I usually plan on being out of the Sequim bay entrance before sun up.) That usually gives enough time (2-3 hours) to make the crossing easy at about 12 - 14 knots. I have not checked tide times yet, or Cattle Pass currents, but those are workable with some time allowance.

We will have more dialog as we get closer to the event...

Heinz & Diane
