05/14 - 05/18 - 6th Annual Delta/Bay Extravaganza

Hi All,

Very late to barge in here I realize, but we have just hauled our C-Dory from Connecticut to California and are calling Sausalito home for the near future. Been here all of 4 days but it has been beautiful so far. Anyway, we are keeping our boat at Clipper Yacht Marina in Sausalito and will probably be out on the water this weekend. If you are all still planning on going to the Sausalito cruising club, maybe we could stop by and say hello. Not sure what the protocol is however.

Cheers.

Dougal and Jennifer

Dougal,

Monitor channel 68, or greet them upon arrival and assist them in docking.
The group should be in Sausalito by noon on Friday.
They will be at Schoonmaker Point Marina on “F” Dock.

Enjoy and give them our best, we were hoping to be able to make it.

I am home from the first part of the Delta trip. I have to work this weekend so came home from the duck club as the others headed for Petaluma.

Docking at the duck club was very easy this year since there was very little current and the wind was from the north - mostly over the top of the channel.

I can report that great food was prepared and eaten, large stripped bass were caught, and merriment was had by all!

A strong NNE wind came up during the night that pelted our boats with eucalyptus leaves and twigs but this morning revealed only moderate white caps. It looks like the winds will be very moderate for the rest of the trip but the temperatures will be high.

I will post a few pics in my album soon.

Joel called today--- had to rub it in about how much fun they are having
He said the crossing of San Pablo was calm and smooth.
Dang it-- now why does he have to do that  , couldn't he just call and say they were having bad weather or something

Roger,

You can take solace in that it probably was plenty hot in the Petaluma basin with no wind.

I am sure they had a good trip and it looks like it should be low wind for the rest of the trip - rare for this time of year. It was very hot today were I was and probably very warm in Suasalito.

Ho Ho ho--low wind? We had a wonderful cruise! Such great organization, and the people made it happen.

The start was several of us gathering the night before. I had to park the rig at Brannon Island State Park. The security was good, and the ramp was fairly easy to to use, especially with the total length of 65 feet.

The Wheeler Island Duck club and John/Robin's hosting was a fantastic experience. Truely a trip back in time 75 or more years.

Pateluma was hot, the Italian food was good and the trip up the river was also a trip back in old California.

There was a smooth trip down the bays and to Schoonmaker Marine. The wild night will be described by others--but I will post the photo of the winner of the Tattoo contest...Then there was the band and singer--it was what it had been billed as!

Most of the Group hiked all around Angel Island on Saturday--and we had a fish fry--the 27 and 20 inch striper that John had caught at Wheeler Island!
The transit to the Oakland Estuary gave us some pretty steep seas and real chop. The sailboat next to me at Jack London Square claimed to have seen 35 knots of wind on his sail across. We had following seas and 20 or so knots on the run all of the way back to Rio Vista on early Sunday AM.

The barbecue at Everette and Jones at Jack London Square was great--and wonderful blues for entertainment.

I have been on a lot of cruises, but this is one of the best I have been on in my life! Thanks to "Pounder's" excellent crew--they made it happen! We will be back next year--even if we have to drive across the US to do it.

I have about 200 photos, and hope to get some of them up on the site tonight.
There may have to be some censorship....of the tattoo contest...

Frequent Sea is in Shasta City tonight--maybe I'll make the Anacortes gathering...

Bob, good comments and oh so true! But you also were a great contributor to the cruise and its success, really enjoyed meeting and chatting with you. For the 5-6 days of this cruise I believe we experienced almost every facet of weather and seas (except rain). We had hot days, muggy days, some cold nights, glass smooth water, 5-6 ft "chop" with heavy fog to contend with crossing the bay mid-afternoon on Saturday.

The Wheeler Island Duck Club is an awesome experience every year. John and Robin on Dinner Belle II are truly gracious to allow us to partake in the splendor of their club. The 27" and 20" stripers were the largest caught so far on any of these trips, and very tasty. What a treat.

Petaluma was a bit on the hot side. But we found a boat that actually had an air conditioner ON BOARD! Yours. Worked great, you made several 'new friends' that day.

The whole trip was wonderful, all kinds of weather and adventure, another memorable experience for sure. Thank you Jim and Kathy for once again putting together such a great event and activities. I'll post some pics probably tomorrow.

I would like to find out what kind of VHF John has on Dinner Bell II.
As I was leaving I could hear his radio better than any of the others.

I would like to hear more about the bay crossing with the fog and wind.

I can't answer the question about the VHF on Dinner Bell II. I can say and thank all those on the Bay Cruise for helping Sydney and I to experience the trip of a life time. :D A very special thank you to Jim and Cathy (Pounder ) for helping me feel at home with you all on my first Bay Cruise. There is no way that I would have made the crossing from Angel Island to Jack London in my new to me 19 if you guys hadn't been there. :smilep Having you there gave me the confidence I needed to do it. I now have a good understanding of the capabilities of the C-Dory. :thup After that crossing the Sunday morning run back to Rio Vista was just another day. But, I must say some of the following seas before the Benicia Bridge were challenging for my boat to say the least. I'm sure for the bigger Dorys it may have been also.
Thanks, Steve for being there.

I only got 3 photos up last night. The KOA WI FI I was at, would drop me when I tried to post photos, and then shut down for the night at 9:15.

Tonight I am just South of Portland, and seem to have solid WiFi--so hope to get some other photos up--including the crossings.

Thanks to everyone who came this year. Kath and I enjoyed our 6th cruise this year as much as our very first Delta/Bay trip.

Again, it is not the destination, it is not even the journey, but rather it is the people that make these cruises so great. Kath and I would go anywhere with this same great group of C-Dory folks. This was a very compatable and upbeat fun bunch of boaters.

When we started our engines at 5:59 AM on the last Sunday morning for our big push back to Rio Vista, and then heard six other engines start up immediately thereafter, it was music to our ears. It was just like "Gentlemen, Please Start Your Engines". It was very easy to move along with this group.

We are happy to again report that there were no real engine problems on the trip, and everyone made it safely back.

What more could one ask, but a safe and fun trip. See you all next year, same time and same place, god willing, and the creeks don't rise.

Meanwhile, see you all in August at Catalina.

Jim and Kath

A couple of fishermen from another sight we're pretty excited to see a "C-Dory Parade" go thru!! Even took a pic.

That picture is dated 5/17, Saturday. We were probably on our way from Angel Island to Oakland at the time. Both boats appear to be 22's, any idea which ones (2nd boat appears to have bottom paint)?

Just added 23 more pics from Alex's camera, check them out starting here. As most of you know, it's REALLY hard to stop and take the time to take pictures when you're having so much fun! Enjoy.

I finally got 40 more photos posted. Remember that I just took the pictures, and am not responsiable for the actions of those C Brats in the photos. I also am often hard to find, in case you want to take retribution....

I had to compress these photos drastically. If anyone is interested in a full set, in high resolution, I will be glad to send them a CD or specific photos, after I get home later in the summer.
