05/14 - 05/18 - 6th Annual Delta/Bay Extravaganza

Dr Bob, many of us 'longer distance' travelers arrive on Tuesday. Nice quiet marina for night with showers. Trailer parking excellent. Looking forward to finally meeting you!

Pat and I will probably be arriving in the morning- Wednesday.
We'll be leaving Carpinteria after work Tuesday- depends on how much driving I want to do before stopping to sleep.
See ya :D

Roger

Great--Tuesday it will be! I might even get up there Monday Evening--depends on the traffic and what time I get out of the LA Basin.

RJD--Pomona College Class of 1958--but I left in 1957 without graduating to go to med school. I was 12 units short of graduation, but Pomona requires that the last 30 hours be spent on campus, so I am a college drop out. Kris Kristofferson and I sang and played a duet in a "Spring Sing" in 1955. Kris had talent, I didn't. Claremont has changed a lot thru the years. My son is Class of 1992 of Pomona.

I believe that CMC became co-educational about 1976--so you probably would have been one of the last classes of the all male school (?).

It will be fun for me to meet you all!

yes, CMC went co-ed right after I graduated

Claremont is very different, just an LA suburb, back then it was all hills and orange groves. I loved it.

In summary, our schedule is now pretty well set. We tried to get reservations at South Beach Harbor in San Francisco (as in the recent past) but this year the Oakland Yacht Club got their reservations before us hence South Beach is unavailable to us this year. We also tried to get reservations at the other SF Marinas (Pier 39, Pier 38, Hide Street Pier, and SF Marina). All of these other SF marinas are now on a first come, first served basis, and they would not take a group reservation. Next year if we want to guest dock in SF, we will have to make the reservation a year in advance, and limit the group to 10 boats (versus 12 boats this year).

We are pleased to report though that we have confirmed reservations at Scott’s Basin in the Oakland Alameda Estuary for the entire group on Saturday night, and they can put us all together. The Jack London Square is still a good venue and it is an interesting historic area.

However, if folks in the group want to “anchor out“ on the last night at Ayala Cove, then this also could be a fun alternative. This Angel Island alternative however would require some of us bringing our tenders along so we could row into shore from our buoy. Also we would have to get over to Angel Island first thing Saturday morning to secure our 12 buoys, as they only have 27 in total, and they also do not take group reservations.

xxx

The question for this group now is how many folks want to spend their last night of the trip in relative comfort at Jack London Square, and how many want to more “rough it” at Angel Island. We will do whatever the majority of the group wants to do. Also, if you want to do the Angel Island alternative, are you willing to bring a tender along with you? We believe either the Jack London or Angel Island alternative would be excellent, and are open to group momentum. Please give us your vote.

xxx

Future communications will discuss food, fun activities, and more detailed logistics such as bridge opening schedules. Again, we are looking forward to seeing everyone.

Jim
Even though I grew up on these waters I have never experienced a group gathering for like five days, other than Tinsly Island in the Delta. What a great job you have done putting this together. The last night I'm with the group. Whatever is best. Sams restaurant in Tiburon has several dock side moorings. Only a stones throw from Angel Island....Any one got some ins a San Francisco Yacht Club. See you at Rio Vista.

I will go with the group concensus, but for convenience, I like Angel Island, we seem to go there most every year to sightsee anyway, love that place. Plus, the distance home to Rio Vista the next day is a little shorter. Do you know if they allow rafting up overnight? I can bring a dingy to transport those without.

Either way though, no problem.

My vote is for Jack London Square....years ago there was a super good prime rib house there.... Victoria Station... but I guess that's gone now... I always enjoy the place...

Is there still a C-Dory dealer there ??? Maybe they would like to host us at a fine dinner like Catalina Yacht Sales did when we went to Catalina..
(If I ever buy another C-Dory they sure got my business)

We bought our boat from The Outboard Motor Shop just a few miles from Jack London Square. I can't speak to their willingness to host a dinner, but they are very nice people. You would probably want to contact Bill Burkhart, the general manager. He is a great guy. Phone = 510.533.9290. I have misplaced Bill's e-mail, but the shop's is www.outboardmotorshop.com. Send attention Bill or Craig(owner).

There are three fine waterfront restaurants at Jack London Square, Scott's Landing, Kincaid's, and a seafood place whose name slips my mind. We have not eaten at Kincaid's, but I would guess it to be the best bet for prime rib. The restaurant in the hotel was very good the last time we ate there. A less obvious choice is a block up Broadway -- Everett and Jones BBQ. I like it a lot.

Regards to all,

Greg

Dear All Delta and Bay Extravaganza Attendees:

The Sixth (6th) Annual Delta/Bay Extravaganza is now less than one month away. Get your trucks, trailers, and boats maintained, and ready for our best event ever!

Now that we have our destination itinerary, we provide some details for our daily group event activities, and food arrangements. We also are requesting volunteers for food assignments.

Let us start with some small amount of romancing about the trip. An extraordinary thing about cruising in the Delta and the Bay is the plethora of destinations, including our end destination itself, Oakland/San Francisco. John Steinbeck called San Francisco “the City”.

Jack London hung out in Oakland. That is pretty good company to keep. Alamar Oakland Marina is a nice spot tucked away at the end of the Oakland Estuary. Lots of beautiful sail boats are over here.

Schoonmaker Point Marina, Sausalito is strictly an upscale facility in a very aesthetic location near the Golden Gate Bridge. This marina is also close to the Sausalito Cruising Club, a very funky place indeed.

The adjective used frequently to describe Petaluma, and the downtown Turning Basin where we are staying, is “charming”, with its small town atmosphere. Petaluma is a wonderful place to wonder around from the riverfront.

The Wheeler Island Duck Club is so exclusive and remote, few folks have even been there. If one is so lucky to be invited here, it is like going back 100 years to the time of Hemmingway, and other great sportsmen and conservationists. The night view of the City from here is terrific.

Well that is enough of this mental wandering. We just wanted to get everyone as pumped up for the event as we are.

This is our sixth (6th) year we have undertaken this challenging, five-day trip. It is a fast moving journey, covering much diverse territory, and the adventure is totally weather dependent.

We cover close to 200 NM on the entire round-trip, so please come with full fuel tanks. Start budgeting for your gas expenditures now. We usually use a little over 50 gallons of fuel on this boat trip. Last year we came back on gas fumes to Rio Vista.

For planning purposes there are twelve (12) C-Dories in total on the trip, including seven (7), 22-foot cruisers; four (4), 25-foot cruisers; and one (1), 19 foot C-Dory. There are twenty-two (22) soles on-board for the trip in total.

The marina itinerary for this trip is exactly as we previously posted. We have determined that we will spend the last night of the trip at Scott’s Basin, in the Oakland Alameda Estuary, and we will not be anchoring out at Angel Island.

As an aside, Ron of the C-Dory, “Islander” spent considerable efforts trying to use some of his yacht club privileges to allow us to stay at one of the exclusive San Francisco Yacht clubs for Saturday night, but we just were not able to make that work this year. Maybe in the future we can make this happen.

Below is our Fun and Food itinerary:

1. Wednesday, May 14th

If Roger and PJ have their new vessel, there will be a formal christening ceremony before dinner at the Wheeler Island Duck Club dock. There will be champagne, speeches/ prayers, and communion.

Kath and I will be hosting a steak BBQ dinner at the Wheeler Island Duck Club. John and Robbin will be helping with cooking and preparations. No need for anyone to bring dinner food for this opening night.

Everyone is to bring his or her own drinks throughout the trip (both non-alcohol and alcohol). Unless otherwise specified as a group meal, everyone is on their own for breakfasts and lunches.

Feel free to bring your own wine to dinner on Wednesday night, or host your own dock cocktail hour at any of our destinations.

Ten of the twelve vessels are coming very long distances. There will be awards after dinner on Wednesday, for just arriving at the Duck Club!

2. Thursday, May 15th

Kath and I will be providing bacon and eggs for a hearty send-off group breakfast at the Duck Club. Again, John and Robbin will be helping out with the breakfast preparations.

We need four (4) volunteers for the following food items for the Thursday morning group breakfast for 22 people:
• Coffee, with milk and sugar, and orange juice (a coffee maker is at the Duck Club)
• Hash brown potatoes, and bread with butter and jam (a toaster is at the Duck Club)
• Pastry
• Fresh fruit bowl.

We need to leave the Duck Club in time to make a scheduled bridge opening on the Petaluma River, and to get ahead of the outgoing tide in San Pablo Bay. We need to leave the docks at John’s place no later than 9:30 AM, Thursday morning, and leaving earlier may be even better.

On Thursday we will be staying right in scenic downtown Petaluma. It is very quaint. This is a great new venue that everyone seems to enjoy.

There are many neat restaurants and businesses that one can easily walk to from where we are staying in the Petaluma Turning Basin. We expect that those that want to can all go out to dinner Thursday night.

There is a nice reasonable Italian place within easy walking distance of our docks that we found last year. It is called Volpi’s Italian Bar (Washington Street), and has been there since 1918, and they still serve the same folksy family style food.

3. Friday, May 16th

On Friday we will be heading for Sausalito. We need to clear the Petaluma “D” Street Bridge as a group by 8:00 AM, Friday morning.

At Schoonmaker Point Marina we will be staying on “F” Dock. Remember on sighting into Schoonmaker, to line up with Day Marker #6, on the way in, and way out. This is also a good place for fuel if you need to top your tanks off.

Sausalito is pretty cool place, and we usually use this destination to “just hang out” for some down time and relaxation after having safely navigated that nasty San Pablo Bay. There are several neat places to explore over at Tiburon and Belvedere for those inclined, and having the energy.

We will have Ron Islander make a group reservation at the Sausalito Cruising Club for a unforgettable Friday night dinner for those that want to attend. We dined there last year and had a hilarious time. Very eccentric clients, good food, reasonable prices, Bay view, and live music!

4. Saturday, May 17th

On Saturday we will be heading over to the East Bay. Remember to not wait too late to go over there or you could end up battling those prevailing Westerly winds. The Westerly or Northwesterly winds on the Bay usually begin just before noon; so if you want to avoid them, get settled in to your destination before noon. Also watch out carefully for large ocean-going commercial vessels on the Bay!

At Almar Marina, in the Oakland Alameda Estuary, be will all be staying together in Scott’s Basin. We have been assigned the following twelve slip numbers: 41, 42, 43, 44, 45, 46, 47, 48, 50, 53, 54, and 54b. The slips will be assigned within our group on a first come basis.

There are also lots of options for Saturday morning. In year’s past many have gone over to Angel Island, and then walked the hiking trails along the Vista point looking out at the Golden Gate. Others have taken their boats around Alcatraz Island, or headed over to Treasure Island. Finally, some have gone out the Golden Gate to check out what the rugged North Coast is all about.

If you choose to go out the Gate, please know what you are doing, know where the shipping channels are, keep out of the breaking North potato patch bar and South breaking shoal, and watch the weather. We also recommend putting a seasickness patch behind your ear Friday night if you decide to go out the Gate.

One year some of us went fishing out the Gate up to Bolinas Bay. There will be no King/Chinook Salmon season this year, so this option is off-the-table.

If any of the group is up for it we can all have a nice farewell meal at one of the close by upscale restaurants in Jack London Square. We really don’t have the Oakland scene totally figured out yet, but we have learned not to wonder up some side streets around Jack London Square, as the neighborhood can get pretty rough. We are going to a sail boat show this weekend at Jack London Square, and we will do some more research for eating options here.

5. Sunday, May 18th

We will leave our Oakland docks at sunrise (sharp), because of weather unpredictability and the length of the return trip. In year’s past we usually pull up to the docks at Rio Vista before 11:30 AM.

We are looking forward to seeing old friends, and meeting new folks. Please sign up for one of the four food volunteers for the breakfast Thursday morning.

And the C-Tales Continue

Sounds like this will be another great trip! I made the last two but did not get in on this one. I will probably get over to Rio Vista to meet new and old friends.

Since I am local (only 20 miles from Rio Vista) feel free to call me if anyone needs anything. cell 925-381-1855

Still hoping to make it---- but I ain't holding my breath.
Scot swears up and down they'll have the boat complete--- at this point I don't believe a word he has to say. :amgry :amgry :amgry
After the factory is done, they have to ship it down and then another two weeks to commission.
If someone else wants to go, they can take our place in the lineup.

Roger

Sounds excellent Jim and Kath, looking forward to the trip. Since we are so familiar with shopping for hash browns, etc (and haven't had any complaints) we'll bring:

Hash brown potatoes, and bread with butter and jam

Just an FYI to those fishermen that might be coming down my way....The halibut fishing is RED HOT right now everywhere from Richmond to Oyster Point(SF).Trolling hoochies and frozen anchovies are producing nice grade fish on the Flats along with drifting shiners. The sturgeon are starting to go crazy too. Salmon roe is the ticket for me lately and the sloughs that feed into Grizzly/Suisun Bay are your best bet. And even the Spring run of stripers is turned on too!!! Bullheads and ghost shrimp are producing nice fish around the Moth Ball Fleet.Good luck and stay safe!!

Brandon

Frequent Sea will bring pastries for breakfast. I am looking foreward to joining the group, and revisiting the Delta. I will be at the Marina a day before, and perhaps stay in the area for another day.

Thank you for all of the preparation and work which goes into this type of "aventure".

Roger, since Marie will not be with me until I get to Sequim, your family is welcome to share Frequent Sea for this trip, if your boat does not arrive in time. I sleep fine on the converted dinette, and guests can have the V berth.

Thanks for the offer, but we would have a 4 month old dog with us.
We are still holding out hope that we will have a boat--- may not be fully rigged--- but we hope to have a boat.
