There has to be a place to put you, rafted or whatever. Another option would be to anchor just off the docks??

Regretfully, we must cancel on going to Lopez. Between getting the boat ready for Alaska and other obligations we just can't make it to this years gathering.

When we stayed at the Islander last summer, they were putting three boats into slips designed for two... they had overbooked. Even though we prepaid, they were telling us "no room". Persistence and determination. There were boats tied to the fuel dock (right, Doghouse?) and any other place they could stuff 'em. It is a very protected area in front of the resort, so anchoring out would be easy.

Y'all have fun - we're looking forward to getting back to the NW later this season.

Lopez Attendees,
I reserved dock space for Friday and Saturday, it looks like we will not be able to get up there until Saturday Morning, so my Friday slot is probably going to go empty. Kathy stated that she was putting Dakota on a 40 foot dock with a 22' C-Dory, so if someone wants to squeeze into that slot on Friday ?

I would imagine there would be plenty of room at the dock at Cornet Bay. There are two floats as well as a pretty long dock. On a Thursday night, it will probably be fine.

Thanks for the info. We have launched there many a time but never needed to stay.
Plan (a) now looks like we will try to put Kingfisher on the dock on Thursday and then take the rig home to return sometime later in the day or Friday morning

If no space we will go back to Oak Harbor and try there.

It would have to get pretty darn crowded at the State docks to have no room for your boat ;it could happen but isn't likely. Especially not on Thursday.
 
It might be a bit more crowded than normal (cornet) with Ling Cod and bottom fishing have just opened, this is opening weekend, and deception pass is a very popular spot. I also couldn't get moorage at Lopez so we decided to stay at Friday harbor and just come over during the day to Lopez. We haven't stayed at friday yet anyway and I have a old freind who lives on the Island that I want to try and have dinner with. But we should be able to make it over for a bit at least.

Les, Thanks. If you get the smell of bacon and eggs coming from your parking lot you will know what happened !!! Hope you can make it to Lopez. Could offer you a ride out there but not coming back for 2 weeks..

Brats,

I cancelled my reservation at Lopez Islander Resort, but I couldn't get the reservation transferred to a C-Brat. They have a waiting list and the slip will go to a 36 ft boat. Sorry!

Our plan seems to be coming together reasonably well.

We're going to untie from our slip in Edmonds Friday morning at 8:30. With luck, we'll arrive at Cornet Bay (42 nautical miles) about two hours later, and join up with the other C-Brats congregating there.

IF WE ARE LATE: As the flood builds, how unpleasant can we expect it to get bucking the current through Deception Pass?
 
Wave as you go by... We're leaving Cultus Bay at 9am or so, headed up Saratoga Passage. The forecast for Admiralty Inlet isn't great. Since we can't get to Deception in time for slack, we'll probably head up the Swinhomish Channel past LaConner. See ya all in Lopez late afternoon

Caryn & I will probably be leaving Twin Bridges early afternoon, arriving at Lopez around 3:00. If anybody's going our way, we'd be happy to convoy.

So far this is the forecast, hopefully it gets better by friday. I was wanting to get out of work early friday and head to either twin bridges or deception pass, but if it gets real nasty we might leave early saturday instead. Rosario can get pretty ugly. We'll see waht happens.

C-Brats going by way of Deception Pass;

The current in Rosario Strait will be at maximum ebb of 2.7 knots at 10:45am Fri. The next slack in Rosario is at 2:35pm. The slack at Deception is 11:10am.

If the wind forecast holds true and generates 25 knots SW and 2 to 4 ft seas, then Rosario is going to be a real washing machine. The 25 knot SW wind colliding with the 2.7 knot ebb current could make that forecast 2 to 4 ft into 4 to 6 ft waves all standing straight up!!

The route up the Swinomish and around the top of Cypress could be the better choice.

Can someone explain to a newbie to boating in the San Juans how going up the Swinomish channel from Coronet bay can help avoid a nasty Rosario crossing? Don't you still have to cross Rosario at the top to get to Lopez?

Hi Brats,

We're looking forward to this trip. Leaving at O-Dark:30 Thursday AM to spend the night in Friday Harbor.

I picked up about 8 lbs. of Sausage to BBQ for hor d'ouvres on Saturday night. A local butcher makes Polish, German Brats, Italian and Cajun Hot Links. We like to BBQ them and set out several specialty mustards to accompany them. Look up Dreamer and follow your nose to the smoke about 5:00 PM Sat. If there's any beer left, it would sure go good with these.

At least two of the Sequim fleet are coming over. There's a brand new 22 in town too but haven't heard if he's coming. Hope so!

You are correct, you still have to cross Rosario Strait. But by going through the Swinomish Channel, you can then go up the east side of Guemes Island and over the top past Cypress Island, then cross Rosario Strait further up north and go through either Pevine or Obstruction Pass and back down to Lopez. Many times, it's not as nasty to cross Rosario up north rather than south where Guemes Channel & Bellingham Channel both flow into Rosario Strait, creatting real strong currents and the real possibility of being opposed by strong winds. That creates the washing machine Larry alluded to. Most times we've crossed Rosario down there, the conditions could be a bit lumpy but definitely doable in a C-Dory. At times, you can catch fairly calm waters but generally speaking, it's a little lumpy. And of course, in strong winds it can be downright uncomfortable. Because of this, and based on Fred's recommendation, we've been taking the alternate route up and around. Apparently, it's nearly the same distance.

If you come out of Deception Pass, you are in Rosario Strait and have no choice but to cross it at that point. One thing to remember is that the Swinomish Channel is no-wake most of the way through so it takes about an hour to get through it. I guess it's pick your poison.
