05/04 - 05/05 - Lopez Opening Day 2007

Shan and I went over to Fisherman's Bay today in Lopez to check it out, our first trip across Rosario . We left Twin Bridges Marina around 10:00 am this morning, light wind, a little chop before we got over through Thatcher pass, but calm as could be once we got in. I'll have to admit, even after reading in Waggoners about the way in, we almost hit the sandbars, its tricky the first time in. Kept our eye on the depth gage and when it dropped to 5 feet we knew we were heading the wrong way, quickly got back on track. Had the place to ourselves today. Calm seas all the way back. Our little 19 Angler Dakota is handling well, just need to get used to how to work the trim tabs.

Time to bring this one back on top!

Although we are currently boatless, Ranger Jeff promises we'll have Island Ranger in time for Lopez. If not....we're staying at his place!

We're planning to cruise up on Friday, and will plan on dinner at the restaurant. Not sure what we're doing on Saturday - maybe a little fishing, or whale watching - but we'll be back for a Saturday dockside potluck.

I know there are several Brats that are planning to come - but haven't signed up. I hope you have signed in with Kathy at least to reserve space.

And with a little encouragement, Merv might bring the C-80 /120 Raymarine software upgrade so we can all check it out and maybe install it in.

See you all there (I hope!)

Since I just joined C-Brats and didn't know about this gathering sooner, I just called Lopez Islander and was told they were completely booked that weekend. The gentleman who answered the call did state that if I knew another boat owner who had already reserved a space it would most likely be ok to tie onto the other boat. Kathy is suppose to call me on Thursday to confirm if this is possible or if she has a space hidden somewhere.

So, any volunteers to let a new C-Dory owner scrape the gelcoat off the side of your nice, clean and very much beloved boat? :smileo

In all seriousness, I don't expect anyone to agree to this.

Any suggestions for a nearby marina that I might inquire about space?

Thanks,

-Sarge

Don't let that stop you. There's always room for one more C-Dory.
See ya there.

Woops I forgot to call and get a slip too. We will head over and see if there is some squeezing room or maybe make a reservation at IMC or Friday Harbor.

Larry,

Thanks. I gave IMC a call and booked a slip. They have a 24 hour cancellation policy so if Kathy finds me a spot at Lopez Islander I can cancel early without causing IMC much grief.

BTW, they said I was the ONLY reservation for that day so there is lots of room in the marina. Maybe we can scare up some more CD owners and take over 2 marinas!

Sarge,

Rafting depends on where on the Lopez Resort moorings your "partner" would be. If you are on the outside of their marina rafting would probably work. Inside slips are a little narrow for that with a boat on the other side. Rafting is fairly common at CBGT's and you should just come on to Lopez. The brat braintrust will find a way for you to be taken care of. And, there is the "Islands Marine Center" just a short way from the Islander Resort Marina. I don't know anything about them but their number is (360) 468-3377. Check the Waggoner's guide for info and call Kathy back for suggestions.

Colobear,

Thank you very much for the offer.

What I would like even more is a wingman to go to the island with me. This will be my first time and I would find comfort in having another boat nearby. I'll be leaving from Edmonds and I see you are on Whidbey. Would you be interested in such a prospect?

Reminds me of us last year. We picked up C-Cakes on April 29th and were at Lopez a week later. We convoyed with other C-Brats from the Deception pass-Guemes channel area. I can't commit right now as Patti is in the midst of job change and we may not be able to go until Saturday but I am sure several others will be going up from that general area and would be happy to ride shotgun. Heck, if they could keep us off the rocks they can do anything :) :) . Just ask on this thread.

Sarge - seems like you have this handled! I agree with the others, I would say go whether you had a reservation or not, it seems like somebody who made a reservation always fails to show up, rafting on the outside is always a possibility, IMC would be kind of a distant third choice because most of the fun stuff happens on the dock by the boats. But heck, I would even anchor out and dinghy in if that is what I had to do. Your idea for a wingman is a darn good one, hope somebody can make the run with you. We won't be able to attend, we'll be in California for our son's wedding.

Sarge,

We'll be heading out from Twin Bridges at the northern entrance of the Swinomish Channel on Friday. If you head up by way of Saratoga Passage and the Swinomish Channel, we would be glad to escort you over to Lopez. I remember vividly our first trip two years ago to Lopez, that was our first big trip in C-Dancer. It was quite an adventure for us and a great C-Brat Gathering.

I'm sure there will be other offers, this group is quite helpful that way.

Pat & Patty,

What, you two not attending a CBGT? That's blasphemy! And unheard of around these parts.
We won't be able to attend, we'll be in California for our son's wedding.
Oh well, I guess your son's wedding is a good excuse. We'll miss you both. :(

C-dancer,

Thank you for the offer. We will most definitely be taking the inside route.

When the date gets closer I'll start up this conversation again to arrange times that work for both of us.

Might be an idea for all those leaving from the North end of town, (Seattle)Whidbey Island , Camano, etc to coordinate and see if we could make some kind of "armada". Could be a lot of fun.

We have not decided on launch site yet as we are going to be away for about 10 days for a mini cruise after Lopez and do not want to leave the towing rig unattended for all that time, but in all probability it will either be direct out of Deception Pass or "up the inside" from Holmes Harbor on S. Whidbey.

Anyone interested let us know.

Sarge, I live on Guemes Is. As you come out of the Swinomish Channel into the Guemes Channel you are headed directly towards GI and within a few degrees to port of where I launch in Cooks Cove. As things get closer let me know. I/we will be heading over on Fri. Channel 68 is the unofficial official comm channel in the PNW.
