05/04 - 05/05 - Lopez Opening Day 2007

I'm sure looking forward to this event!
Yesterday while launching at Skyline we met a very nice woman, Terese, who I invited to our gathering. She and her husband are looking for a boat and C-Dory is their top choice. We told her there would be plenty of boats to see! I hope they drop by.
Is anyone planning to be there with a car? I have a retreat in Leavenworth that ends Saturday and am planning to drive up and walk onto the ferry that afternoon. I'd love a ride over to Fisherman's Bay! Or, does anyone know of a place Chris could pick me up in the boat that's near the ferry landing?

Janet - The nearest boat pickup location to the ferry landing is at Odlin County Park. There is a dock there which provides easy access.

Hi Janet,
As Jay stated, Odlin County Park. FYI it is within a mile of the Lopez Ferry Landing. At the end of the road into the park, you'll see the dock off to your right. (Probably at the same location where your husband and "Luna C" will be anxiously awaiting your arrival :roll: )
 
Just to clarify - I'll be at the Sleeping Lady Resort in Leavenworth WASHINGTON with a bunch of National Board Certified Teachers.... :D
Thanks for the info on Odlin County Park!! If I understand your directions, I'll only be walking about a mile to the park where I'll find Chris. that sounds perfect!

Yes, it is only about a mile walk to Odlin. Now, if the weather is not good for boating, you could easily hitch a ride from the Ferry area to Fisherman Bay. The ol' thumb works well on Lopez, the friendly island.
 
Patty here. Okay, you ALL know that we will not be at Lopez and you ALL know the reason why---our first born is getting married in the San Francisco area. We will certainly be thinking of you all on Saturday night and I would ask that you all raise a glass in honor of our son's wedding. It was so difficult to decide which event to attend, but in the end I got to buy a terrific new dress and shoes and earrings, so the choice was clear. Anybody up for Princess Louisa on Memorial Day weekend?

As a first year boater, new to the NW, how directly does this effect me when heading to the Lopez Gathering? Do I need to review those numbers and then coordinate my timing through Thatcher Pass?
The few times I've been out what I always check is the weather, i.e. the wind and wave heights. If the seas are 1 to 2, I dont worry. Also, since I'm not heading through Deception Pass, I havnt paid too much attention to the tides - am I asking for trouble? I think with Rosario Straite I need to watch for a South wind and ebb tide, but anything else I should be aware of?

Tom, You don't have to worry about tides as far as Thatcher Pass goes. You are correct in your assessment of Rosario with a south wind and ebb tide, but that is just choppy stuff. The biggest thing to keep in mind is your entrance into Fishermans Bay. Heed the signs, day markers and buoys. Especially the last red buoy as you near the inside of the bay. Do not cut inside as it is very shallow and with a -1.5 it will be even shallower.

David is spot on. It looks like we'll be heading into Fisherman's Bay later in the afternoon according to the tide charts. As for Thatcher Pass and Rosario, I got a good tip from Fred (Anita Marie) about going up the east side of Guemes Island from Twin Bridges and up and around through either Peavine Pass or Obstruction Pass at the top of Rosario Strait and then back down to Lopez. It seems a better way to avoid that slop that is always Rosario down below. And it really isn't much farther.

Patty, sorry you and Pat won't be there but like us last year, family matters come first. As for Princess Louisa for Memorial Day, maybe this year might be the year it works for us. :thup (I guess I should ask the Admiral first) Anymore takers?

Thanks David - now I have something to worry about. Any idea what the channel depths run? Running with a fixed draft of 26 inches on the Ranger 25, I now have to start thinking about these things. Two Lucky Fish would float in anything - and was easy to push back in the water when needed. Maybe I'll need to plan to arrive a lot later in the day??.....

Not to worry if you stay in the channel. I've been in there with the 85 ft. Burger at zero tide... nervously, of course.

Tom - David is EXACTLY right on Fisherman's Bay - the way in is well marked, pay attention! Especially the last red buoy! Your chart plotter will probably show why...but regardless, follow the channel markers and you will be fine! Rosario on a bad day can jar your fillings out, but you won't be in danger...

We are leaving on Monday, plan to visit Sidney BC. then spend a day or two in the Islands and end up at Lopez on Friday.

Only got responses from two skippers, and one of these doesn't even have a boat yet, the poor devil. :(

I'm leaving from Edmonds, and I'm leaving on Friday, but unknown what time exactly. I still haven't decided whether to go inside or outside Whidbey. Took the whole family up Admiralty Inlet to Port Townsend Saturday, in less than ideal conditions, so we're not complete amateurs anymore. Still, if the weather is anything less than 100% perfect, we'll go inside, and plan to come out through Deception Pass. If Rosario is bumpy, we'll scoot through Lopez Pass and come up and over the top. If it isn't bad, we'll stay south of Lopez and slip through Cattle Pass with the flood. I always like to have a plan, but I reserve the right to change the plan at any time.

Great idea, Peter. We're new, so we don't know a lot of people, and a lot of people don't know us. I would appreciate this a lot. One for Tim and one for Julia, if you decide to go ahead with it. If you go completely nuts, I'm sure my girls would each like having one: Kiera and Arwen. No worries if you decide not to do it, though.
