    SOS LED distress signal

Along with the techie stuff, we have low-tech gear that takes little space: Speedo swim caps (I use the hotel shower caps in the field) A huge leaf bag (garbage bag) to stay inside of Some swim goggles or at least a dive mask If you've ever spent more than several hours bobbing in the open...

    kicker for CD-16

Re: stern weight. A buddy had a small Arima Sea Ranger, and we used my 8hp Mariner short shaft for the kicker on trips to the 'Nados and Cat. The kicker would stay on the portside, forward. The separate fuel tank could stay as far forward as the gear would allow. No issues with weight (Scuba and...

    Trasom Saver needed?

I apologize if I'm missing the obvious, but the wedge/wood blocks only relieve the constant motor weight pressure on the rams (I certainly could be missing something, but the hanging force still looks the same.) The full weight of the motor still seems able to lever at the motor mounts and...

    Salt Water Docking Maintenance

It's amazing how rodents can find a way aboard. I went cheap and drilled a center hole in "swag" Frisbees you get at boat shows, with a racquetball (free at the gym) on the boatward side of the line to keep the Frisbee perpendicular to the docklines. I remember a guy at Chula Vista Marina...

    Thinking of Heading Off-Shore (70 miles) in C-Dory 25

Good Luck Gerry! My Dad always said "it's never too late to be what you could've been." If you need a Satt phone as back-up, I have one you can borrow, as I'm in Waldorf, MD.

    Thinking of Heading Off-Shore (70 miles) in C-Dory 25

This might be off topic, since Gerry has expressed "solo" cruising; however "solo" doesn't exclude other people aboard. I'm sure we've all had passengers who are at near zero assistance on the boat, but enjoyed the ride nevertheless. It's standard practice to train for "solo operations" with a...

    Dometic CoolFreeze (CF-50) Problems

We had a Dometic long ago, and it's upper functional range was about 92-95f (outside temp), where you would notice a decrease in operating efficiency. The compressor would work fine, it's just a design limitation. I'm in Waldorf, and feel the heat too ... and the wicked lightning shows as of...

Rendering (or receiving) assistance while afloat.

The Ronstan halyard releases are reliable, and deploy under tension...and might I add, so do several other makes that are made outside the USA ;). They are pricey (example the 6310 is about 90 bucks!) although it has a working strength of about 3900lbs, and breaking strength of about 7900lbs, of...

Rendering (or receiving) assistance while afloat.

I've towed others a few times, and always rig with halyard QR shackles. The release pin can be activated by pulling on a 5mm line (whatever length works for you) even under load. Having a Halyard shackle at both ends allows anyone to release the tow in the event of a problem. Being remote from...

    Off Topic: 5th Wheel Trailers

Chucks explanation of camping vs living is on all four corners! We've always camped, although several years ago borrowed a friends 27+ft Winnie to drive north of Fairbanks, AK. It changed my entire idea of "full-size RVs are for slow breathers" mentality. We're retired, and although I still...

    PLB Battery Replacement

Just a quick comment before ditching out to train in the wonderful snow here that's falling like tortilla chips! PLBs don't save lives themselves. What they are exceptional at is taking the "Search" out of SAR. Some providers models have multiple hand-offs, which is a weakness pointed out, and...

    Boathook harpoon gaff combination

Joe: "Next project: Multi-purpose pole with boat hook, gaff, harpoon, .410 shotgun (for Halibut), clam gun, and walking stick. Will make you invulnerable to muggers. No concealed carry permit required!!! Laughing " If it comes with a gimbaled cup holder and wi-fi, it could revolutionize shore...

    Deckwork on Wild Blue

Hi Tim, superb workmanship! Great mod to bridle easier. With the cleats; did you use butyl tape to seal the deckside, and is the hardwood backing a plate you can hang an eyelet from inside?

Single Handing Safety Tips and Considerations

Anytime it's a solo venture, the EPIRB is on my person attached to the PFD which is a CO2 type, and is not bulky. A Fox Storm Whistle and AA strobe as others have mentioned is also attached. Personally, I like the ResQFix over the Spot, but any brand will take the "search" out of SAR. I also...

    US Navy Yacht Club

SDYC and Southwestern YC are quality clubs, and very active. I personally like the less expensive, and totally casual Mission Bay YC. You don't have to schmooze sponsorship, wait forever for the club to "accept" you, and will not be pressured to contribute towards anything. There's wet and dry...

    small radar

Chimoii, At the price point you're looking at, West Marine has the Raymarine package. http://www.westmarine.com/buy/raymarine ... --14907851 It's only a suggestion, as the Garmin unit is also within a few hundred dollars, so it may depend on what electronics platform you're using now to...

    small radar

DEW line huh? OK, now who remember's Ice Station Zebra? They could've used a short range radar in that application. I'm all for smaller and more efficient is better, but the 15+ mile range is still desirable...if nothing else, than looking for birds.

Thanks, the part numbers are like gold. Going automotive instead of WM is quite wise! BTW: great set up for the propane.

    Window defogger

++ on the dish detergent. We use it regularly, especially when driving back from skiing all wet. As a sidebar, in the desert (maybe you Powell-Mead folks), it's common to slather dishwashing liquid on the front of your truck and lights to keep them from getting sand pitted.
