Repair cable steering or replace with hydraulic

Thanks Jody - a good consideration I hadn't thought of. I don't foresee installing autopilot. My approach in general is to operate with the minimum number of systems needed to do what I want to do - I prefer maintenance simplicity, and reduced likelihood of something critical failing when I'm...

Repair cable steering or replace with hydraulic

22 Cruiser with a Honda 90. The tilt tube for my cable steering setup is too coroded to continue using for long. I can replace it for $500 in parts and some sweat equity. For $1,500 in parts, I could instead replace with a Baystar hydraulic setup. I haven't had real anxiety about my cable...

    Buying the Merlin

Not the only non-standard C-Dory in Elfin Cove. I spotted this one over the summer, which I couldn't identify a model for. Typical Elfin Cove weather provided for context.

Software for Spreadsheets and so forth.

I frequently use Google Sheets; free, and very comparable to Excel for simpler functions. For boat purposes, I have developed packing, prep and maintenance templates that I replicate and fill out as my needs dictate.

    reposer a C-Dory 25

My French kicked in, and I thought you were asking about sleeping space on your 25. Je pense qu'il a beaucoup d'espace.

    Missing horsepower, resolved

Ha - I did consider asking the 'which prop' question, but thought I had not quite enough information at hand to properly inform folks. Happy to provide it as a challenge to the technically savvy! 2003 Honda BF90a (carbureted) - I originally misstated 2004 22 Cruiser 2.5 passengers, relatively...

    Missing horsepower, resolved

For some time, I've had a nagging concern that the max rpm on my 2004 Honda BF90A has been lower than it should be. It hasn't made much practical difference, as I cruise around 4200rpm and almost never go to maximum throttle. I was recently testing the difference between two props, though, and...

Freeing severely seized steering rod (the gentle way)

I did start out with applying as much heat and hammering as I dared, but a) wasn't able to get anywhere and b) on further research became more concerned about potentially damaging the steering rod/cable and the meltier components within the tilt tube. The 2x4 method was plan B.

Freeing severely seized steering rod (the gentle way)

Backed off my trailer at the launch this weekend, only to discover I had no steering. Managed to resolve the briefly stressful boat control problem, then set about trying to free up my seized steering rod. Common enough issue, with plenty of internet solutions, but mine appeared resistant to any...

    Marina battery charging - 30A to 15A

On multi-day trips, my house battery can get pretty low. I'm looking to gain the ability to charge batteries while at a marina. Electrons have always been mysterious little creatures for me, so I'm running my plan past the collective wisdom of the C-Brats to ensure I'm not wildly off...

    Alternate use for a 16

Sent by a friend on a recent trip to Sitka. Never thought of a 16 as a tender, but if you've got the hoisting power and deck space, why not?

    Cabin heater vent tube construction

Thanks, all - I'll see about getting my hands on the appropriate vent tubing material for a long-term fix. In the interim, I've made a hybrid solution. The old ABS had some of the aluminum-lined vent tubing taped to the outside, presumably to protect users against touching the hot ABS. I built...
