Southeast Alaska 2012 with Jay, Jo-Lee & the Hunkydory

Jay & Jo-Lee Helen & I hope you have a great time cruising SE Alaska. Let us know if we can be of service while in Juneau. We're berthed at Harris Harbor for the season.

    Best very small dinghy motor

I'm considering the Torqeedo Travel 1003 electric outboard for my dinghy. Its about double the price of a 2-3hp gas outboard. The value for me is that it can be disassembled for storage and is lighter. There are several video clips on Youtube of it in action. I wouldn't want to use it in...

    Permatrim slowing me down?

My Honda dealer talked me out of adding a Permatrim. To drill or not to drill. He preferred not.

    Seasport Sportsman or CD 22/25?

All good advice. I'd add the TomCat 255 to this list for consideration. Lot of pros/cons, but an excellent boat for SE Alaska waters.

    Hewescraft Searunner - Opinions please.

There are a lot of folks in town that have HewesCraft 20-22' boats. It was one of the boats I considered in our search. It had plenty of bins for storage, rugged, really stable & fast on the water, & great for fishing & wildlife watching. Cons: noisy, insufficient range to cruise, & not a...

    C-Dory 25 vs C-Dory 22

My wife & I went with the CD 25' for the extra storage space & amenities. Even for the two of us, storage on the 25' can be a challenge. The head was a must have item. We pay someone to tow us in/out when needed. We rent a slip during the summer. We haul out for winter & pay for storage...

    barnacle removal from hull

Trailer the boat out, clear barnacles off hull with a plastic spatula, then pressure wash. I also use StarBright EZ-on EZ-off to get rid of the rings left behind. I'm going to have my boat bottom painted for next season. Twice a year to clean off those critters isn't enough.

    Twin Power vs Single

One thing mentioned about the kicker was how much use it gets. I don't use mine much. I do fire it up at least once a month during the boating season. If you can run on it for a few hours, or use it for trolling, the better. Kickers seem to start up better when they're used once in a while.

Recommendations for a day trip from Anchorage

We've always enjoyed side trips to Portage Glacier when traveling thru Anchorage. The Big Game Alaska Wildlife Center near Portage Glacier should be interesting. They care for injured & orphaned wildlife.
