    MMSI

We have our number installed in the radio, but untested also. The system is up and operating here in Port Angeles, but we have not had the need to send any distress messages. Also, I have not used the calling capabilities to communicate with other boats. I just use the good old channel 16...

Towing with motor up or down

I'm with Oldgrowth. I tow with the engine "up" and the lock rotated and then slight downward hydraulic pressure. I have towed my last 3 boats this way, and never had a failure. Thousands of miles on I90, I5 and other lesser roads. I just don't like the idea of the prop and skeg being so...

    Troubleshooting question

I have a Raymarine C-80 with radar but no sounder. I have all electronics on the separate house battery. I have forgotten and left the C-80 on with the radar on hot standby for up to 4 hours while at a dock, and the unit never blinks when I start the engine.

    Lower unit lube

I'm using the same lube, the bluish colored fluid. I've had good luck with it, and the Merc dealer where I buy it in PA says it is great at keeping water damage to a minimum if you do have a seal failure. I change it twice a year.

Can someone educate me on Optima Batteries?

When Les outfitted Notayot he put in two 55 ah Optima batteries. One starts the engine and the other runs all of the "house" loads. We have used them for 2 seasons so far. They will last up to 3 days without starting the engine, running Wallas and electronics, lights etc. I only charge them...

BayStar Steering Doesn't Want to Steer?

My Baystar cylinder is stationary and the piston rod (along with a rod in the tilt tube) move. A drag link moves the motor. I routinely take the rod out of the tilt tube to clean and lube it to avoid freezing up with rust. My brother in law just installed a Baystar system on a 60 hp Merc, and...

Poll: Whose CD22's have battery charger, shore power or both

No battery charger and no shore power. We have stayed up to 3 days at one marina without any charging power. We use the Wallas, lights, VHF radio on the 12 volt 55 amp hour Optima house battery and a notebook computer on a 200 watt inverter(powered by the same house battery. We have never...

    C-Dory 22 Dinghy

We have used both the Westmarine 2 person kayak and the 6 foot dinghy. We are currnetly using the little dinghy. I fabricated a rack on top pretty much exactly as shown on the 25' Sea Ranger at the Seattle Boat Show with one minor difference. I used PVC pipe instead of Stainless! It was an...

    Honda Manual/gear case oil

As far as condition, clean is good. Water or milky color is bad. The bottom plug is magnetic. If it has chips stuck to it, you are having some wear on either the shift dogs, gears or bearings, but it is probably shift dog wear from slow shifting or shifting with the engine above idle. A very...

    Opinion on Warranty Issues

We bought our "06 22 footer from Les on Whidbey Island WA. I had one minor warranty issue, and the factory handled it. The issue was minor and could have been handled by anyone that can do gel coat repair. We have had none of the issues you might read of here, and I am knocking on wood now so...

    Honda Manual/gear case oil

It works the same way on the BF 90. I can't remember if there is one vent or two, but you fill from the bottom up, closing the vent(s) and then the fill/drain. I do my own twice a year. I have been using the Mercury "red" gear lube, since I had great luck on my previous outboard which was a Merc.

    VHF channel question

For us here in the United States it usually doesn't mean a thing. For instance in USA mode on your radio the Coast Guard uses 22A to talk and listen. It is actually a single frequency used in USA mode that is half of a pair of frequencies assigned to channel 22. In other modes, (international...

    Alaska 2007

I have not done the Alaska run yet, but I have boated in The Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound and associated waters for 40+years. My first radar was on the C-Dory and I will never go back! I always have it on, and see everything on radar before I see it visually. I believe radar is...

    Honda/Racor fuel filter

I have never seen any water in the filter, but I drain the entire bowl anyway. I'd rather not have any water get past the filter! There has been ab bit of sediment once in a while. I have purchased fuel at marinas from Olympia WA to the British Columbia Gulf Islands. When I get it off, I'll...

    Honda/Racor fuel filter

Thanks! Mine is a CD-22 with a Honda 90 hp. I cannot read the filter number, so I want to remove the element before trying to buy a new one!

    Honda/Racor fuel filter

Ok, two years on one filter. It's time to change the Honda spin on fuel filter. Does anyone know how to remove the filter and the plastic lower bowl? I didn't get any instructions and cannot find them on the internet. The Honda filter and housing look just like the Racor filters. Do you...

    wood a working question

OK, I'm going to try to tape this thread in our living room just to see if I stand a chance.............. Well the garage isn't really THAT cold! We loved our 13 Whaler. When I traded it in in Portland in '94 on a new Whaler the dealer (who had pre-sold it based on photo's I sent to him)...

Video--Hunkydory in the Yukon & Alaska

Ok. perhaps I have watched too many of thos Mac vs PC commercials on TV, but I cannot run the "windows" version of the video's. They are essentially a narrated slide show on both of my PC's. I can, however run the "Mac" versions of the three video's! They are great to watch! It's almost like...
