    Fuel docks in SE Alaska

No fuel between Petersburg and Juneau. Kake has fuel, but it's not really on the way. I visited Tracy Arm and Fords Terror when I traveled between Petersburg and Juneau. With the side trips included I traveled over 230nm. I stretched the range by keeping the speed down to ~5.5 knots and...

    New Poo Regulations ??

My understanding is that it's already illegal to discharge untreated sewage in Puget Sound or any other inland waterway. Currently discharge of sewage treated with a Type I or Type II MSD is legal in Puget Sound. Vessels must be 3 miles offshore to discharge untreated sewage legally. It seems...

    West coast Vancouver island

I went around Vancouver Island last summer and had a wonderful trip. Barkley Sound was the most crowded of the inlets/sounds, but it was far from crowded compared to the inside areas as far north as Desolation Sound. Barkley Sound also has superb cruising, and the C-Dory allows you to go where...

    "Jailbreaking" vs "Unlocking" an iPhone

No need to jailbreak your phone, just have AT&T unlock it. As others have said, unlocking allows you to use a SIM card from another carrier. Jailbreaking allows you to install apps that Apple does not allow. Jailbreaking can facilitate unlocking, but it's not necessary. Have fun! I've used...

    Seattle Boat Show - Friday 1/31/2014 - BREWERY dinner/talk

Yep, still have Retriever. At some point I'll have to get a trailer and explore some inland lakes. Lake Powell is at the top of the list. Thanks to everyone who came to the event at the Taproom, and especially to Roger and Tom and Pat for organizing it all.

    Anchoring system advice needed

15lb Manson Supreme, 50 feet of 1/4 inch high test, 200-250 feet of 1/4 8-plait. Get Acco chain (or some other non-Chinese brand, where you know the galvanizing is good) and similarly high-quality nylon line. An electric windlass makes anchoring easy. This setup has worked for me for many...

C-Dory in the Seattle Boat Show

Mark, I'll be giving two free talks during the boat show about cruising on my C-Dory 22. The first is on Tuesday 1/24 at 4:00pm about circumnavigating Vancouver Island. The second is on Thursday 1/26 at 1:15pm about cruising to Alaska. I'll also be working in the Waggoner Cruising Guide booth...

    Oil changes on long cruises.

I've done quite a few oil changes in the water and it's not that difficult. Honda recommends oil changes every 100 hours, and filter changes every 200 hours. They also recommend lower unit oil changes every 200 hours, which require hauling the boat out of the water. When I'm traveling, I try to...

Belated C-Brat Christmas present; free 2014 Waggoner's Gd.

Thanks for posting this, Dan. Check out page 154 for a new sidebar from our very own Capt. Jim (Bathurst). I think it's an excellent addition to the book. Thanks Jim! As some of you know, I'm the Waggoner Guide managing editor. We've experimented with an iPad app the last couple of years, but...

    Is AIS in the house?

I just installed a Vesper Marine XB-8000. It is basically a "black box" (actually blue) version of the WatchMate Vision. The Vision and XB-8000 come with WiFi Multiplexer's, which means the stream all the NMEA data to computers, smartphones, tablets etc. It's pretty slick.

    2014 Calendar

If Greg is willing to do the calendar I'd be very appreciative. I'm awfully busy with work, setting up the new boat, and getting ready to head out of town right after the holidays. Greg, PM me if you have any questions. Sam

    Verizon vs. AT&T Coverage

Another vote for Verizon. I switched last year when AT&T forced me to get rid of unlimited data to upgrade phones. Verizon service is dramatically better. I've been in a few places where I haven't gotten coverage and friends with AT&T have, but the reverse is much more common. When I had AT&T I...

Anyone ever joined a boat club?

After years of thinking yacht clubs were too snooty for me, I joined Seattle Yacht Club last summer. Their outstations and reciprocal benefits are fantastic. As a young person, it was incredibly cheap to join, and dues are really inexpensive. For older people, it's considerably costlier. When I...

    Princess Louisa Inlet

Daily mileage will be determined later. One of the challenges of winter cruising is short days—literally half as long as summer days. I suspect I'll do three days up and three days back, plus any weather delays. My initial thought for this winter is: Anacortes to Ganges, Ganges to Pender...

    Princess Louisa Inlet

Sea trial, mechanical survey, and hull survey have gone well. Still waiting for oil analysis results; hopefully they'll come in today. Assuming no problems with the oil analysis, I'll own the boat the first week of November. On edit: Oil analysis came back clean...now time to write a big check!

    My Last Boat VI

Foggy, try to get in touch with a forum member named tpbrady. He wasn't satisfied with the Etec 90 on his 22 and repowered with a Honda 90. As I recall he had Yamahas on other boats and liked those even better.

    $8000 for new gas tanks,

No deal yet, but negotiating for a Nordic Tug 37. If we can't agree on price or something comes up at survey, there'll be another boat... The 62 Nordhavn is my dream boat. Maybe someday.
