    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

The Bimini product I'm using did not come with backing plates and only roundhead wood screws came with it. Furthermore when I drilled the holes guess what? Yup, wood fiber came out. I thought for sure that this area had no core. But it did. Now I will over drill and fill with epoxy and then...

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

I take it you did not overdrill, fill with epoxy and redial before you bedded? 30and again 35 years ago I used Lifecaulk, a polysulfide. It had idiosyncrasies and I was poor at accommodating them. Took forever to cure. I always made a mess of it though thankfully it was effective in waterproofing.

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

Well there ya have it...60yrs is a long time as I'm only 66. I like 5200 and 4200 but I'm going to use (amazon just dropped it off) 4000 Fast cure UV. I had some experience on my Skiff that casued me to remove the mounts, I forget what and why, It was so easy as there was no bedding used on the...

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

I did more online research and realized I should not use 3M 5200 for Items that need to be fastened and removed regularly. The Tape is somewhere in btwn in its fast removability. 3M 4000 UV and 4200 fast cure seems to be the easiest to remove. The Job at hand is the mounting of a bimini that...

okay. Now I know. Sounds like it is just what I need. Depending on the temperature, you should allow about 24 hours after you think you're done to tighen again.

The bed-it tape is 1/2" Wide. Many of my fittings are one inch or more in width, case in point the bimini mount I'm about to mount is over 1" wide. How do you handle the tape? Do you double up, stretch it or what? My thoughts are to double it up.

Well that'll be a first. I. never did that but I do drill in forward but gently... You run the drill in reverse to get through the gelcoat to prevent chips. Cracks are a different issue.

    Potable water tank resurrection

Alright that's enough. I'll be using Gin or Vodka, 18 gallons to 1 gallon of dry vermouth to 1 gallon of olive juice. Goes to work in minutes and you don't have to rinse it out. :xlol

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

Hi Tom, Yes I've done it before but it was yrs ago. I wonder though how deep? I'm assuming only the depth of the Gelcoat as I believe it isn't the fiberglass that is potentially cracking but rather just the gelcoat???

I looked up the MSDS sheets for these products and I'll stick to Kroger, Wegmans or Giant brand bleach. Its manifold times safer for Dermal, ingested and respiratory toxicity. Too many grandkids will visit this boat.

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

The reason I asked about coring is that I'm about to instal a Carver Bimini. The mounting hardware consists of #10 x 1" screws. This would normally be plenty for fiberglass but in this case it be drilled through gelcoat, gelcoat that I don't want to crack. The manufacturer does not call for...

    Potable water tank resurrection

My water tank has set empty for some time. Looking through the archive I've found a number of opinions and recommendations for cleaning, purifying and maintaining the onboard 20 gallon water tank. The following is what I've understood as best practices: 1) add a significant amount of Bleach to...

I'll be installing a Bimini this week. Does anyone know if the tops of the cockpit side decks on our 2004 22 have coring in them?

    Remove Boat Lettering: NEW DISCOVERY

I scare me...I avoid potentially damaging rotating tools. I looked at the wheel but felt for sure I'd damage the boat...especially if Beer is involved. For my recent boat I carefully pulled the letters off, nudging with old hotel keys. Then I removed the Lion's share of the remaining adhesive...

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

mstrpo, I'm new to the idea of using a product described of as "tape" for bedding. So I went to a site called marinehowto.com. Seems like cheating....I want to play. While I manage with 5200 and some other polys I do tend to make a mess. Thanks, looks like it was meant for me.

    Re-Bedding Fixtures and an Apology

When I re-bed I will do it right, I have done it before, but with one exception...I did not remove the core back to twice the size as mentioned. I don't want to do this type of work twice especially when considering the potential damage done when it's done wrong or when it fails. While the old...
