How Do You Install Your Own Compass?

Joe, I think most GPS units can indicate in true or magnetic depending on which display the operator selects. To swing your compass you need to have the GPS indicating magnetic.

Compass Question No. 2 -- Best type of compass for a C Dory?

A few year ago I posted a question about using the compass and GPS for navigation. I was surprised that many members don't have or don't use a compass. I am a firm believer but maybe the first question should be: Do you need a compass?

Desolation Sound - May June 2011

Igrant, Thanks for posting a fantastic cruise report. Brings back some very pleasant memories of a C-Brat cruise in Desolation a few years back. I also hit Nancy's Bakery both launching and recovering at Lund. I highly recommend it to anyone cruising the area.

Trailering from the US into Canada?

I have trailered my boat into British Columbia every summer for many years and never had an issue. The entry points going both ways have a sophisticated system of cameras and computers. They know everything about your entry and what you towed in. As far as I am concerned I wouldn't give it a...

    Lake Superior

The world record brook trout was caught in the Nipigon river in 1915. Some of it's descendants may still be swimming in Lake Superior. I lived in the UP for five years back when pacific salmon were first established in the lake. It is a beautiful and fascinating lake.

    Bow Access on 22' Cruiser?

Karl, One thing I do which really eases the step from the floor to the dock is use an ice chest to step on. I have never boated without an ice chest so I always have one aboard. I position it near the aft cabin wall such that I can grab the handhold, step on the built in step, opposite foot on...

    Spare Prop?

No one has mentioned it yet but it is important to remove your prop and clean and grease the prop shaft at least once a year. Otherwise you may not be able to remove it while on the water and make use of your spare. Another thing to watch out for if changing the prop on the water is that the...

    What's in YOUR toolbox?

Boris, A Canadian, Peter Robertson, invented the square-drive screw and received a patent for it in 1907. He set up his own factory to manufacture the new screws and one of his biggest customers was the Ford Model-T plant in Windsor, Ontario. So it is not surprising that you had a Fresno from...

    What's in YOUR toolbox?

Dave, Looks like a pretty complete list. One additional item I carry is a strap wrench to remove the fuel-water separator.

    Hot and Cold trailer hubs

Dave, Is it possible that the brake adjustment could cause a slight difference in hub temps? Maybe the left rear brake is doing all the work and getting the hub warmer.

    Full or Empty - Winterization

I agree with Da Nag about storage conditions. I must be the only person who has no plan. I store my boat for the winter with whatever fuel is in the tanks and don't worry about it. The winter conditions in Spokane are quite variable but the humidity is generally quite low summer and winter...

    Rub Rail Repair.....

My experience has been when SS bolts or screws are used through aluminum (rubrail base) which is often in contact with saltwater you will get some corrosion of the aluminum unless you can insulate the SS from the aluminum. Generous use of 5200 around the bolt may help? I have never had a...

    Trailer bearings

Charlie, I was thinking maybe you would see a color change. I have had leaks in the lower unit and you sure can tell by the milky color if any water has leaked in.

    Trailer bearings

Boris, Would you be able to see if water got into the oil bath hub just by looking? I have wondered if that would be one advantage of the oil bath over greased bearings?

    Loss of C-Brat

My condolences to his family and friends. I met Larry for the first time just a few weeks ago at Neah Bay. He was camped just across from us and we had a few conversations about the local area and fishing. It was obvious he was passionate about fishing and boating. Very tragic.

    I'm a new owner of a TomCat

Congrats on the new boat Roger. If you need an extra crew member when you are ready to go after those albacore give me a call. Be sure to give us a coho report if you do another trip to Neah Bay.

    Ucluelet B.C. fishing

Dan, Sounds like you had a great trip. Did you camp at Island West? I am curious if the campground is still in operation. I haven't been there in two years but in 2008 there were rumors that it was to be turned into condos?

    Tire Pressure

Steve, I would base the pressure on the load rating on the tire. My 225/75 R15's Load Range E tires are rated to carry 2850lbs each at 80PSI. This info is molded on the sidewall of the tire. My fully loaded 22 with single axle trailer comes in about 5000lbs. I keep my tires at 80PSI which I...

    non-skid coating

jd, I made floorboards for my 22 and have been very pleased with them. I used 1/2 in baltic birch plywood with red cedar stringers underneath. I epoxy coated the entire top and bottom and painted the topsides with a non-skid marine paint. I used Interlux brand paint called Interdeck...
