May is ideal. So is June. July and August can be hot and sticky (surprise!), September and October can be perfect -- except for hurricanes (and more likely heavy freshwater discharge with lots of debris). I assume most east coast folks aren't planing on towing to the west coast.

I ordered "marine grade carpet" from Wholesale Marine (CE Smith Boat Trailer Bunk Board Carpet). I stapled it onto 2x6x8 using stainless steel staples. So far, so good!
