    Salmon fishing in Masset b.c.

No personal experience except that of monitoring weather reports and forecasts over a number of years, but: If you're considering running over from the mainland coast, you might want to take into consideration that Hecate Strait is quite shallow much of the way. I read that (often fairly...

    Trips, Bella Coola BC Area?

It's been ten years, but we enjoyed some fine scenery and lovely anchorages not far from Bella Bella and Shearwater, and north and west from there. From there up toward Prince Rupert is about as remote as it gets on the Inside Passage. A good source on anchorages is the Douglass guide...

Thoughts on RAM 1500 Eco Diesel

FWIW, other than replacing the exhaust system and boost hoses, my 1998.5 Ram ISB Cummins engine has cost me essentially nothing for repairs in 170K miles, almost half of which towing a 12,000lb boat trailer. Replaced clutch at ~150K miles. These are normal wear items. Still runs good as new -...

Thoughts on RAM 1500 Eco Diesel

One good source of info is the Turbo Diesel Register web site. Their forum has helped me many times over the years with my 1998.5 Cummins Ram.

Thoughts on RAM 1500 Eco Diesel

It's a VM Motori diesel, same as in the 2014 Grand Cherokee.

    2016 Cruising Plans

Here's a post from Trawler Forum: On November 25 the barge supporting the main building - office, store, and the upstairs Red Shoe Restaurant - failed and most of the building sank. The 73 year old barge was uninsurable. Everyone is fine, and George & Gail have indicated that they will rebuild...

Backup GPS or smart phone acceptable?

My Samsung Galaxy S-II Skyrocket, a ~4 year old Android, has a true GPS. On recommendation from Jeff Siegel of Active Captain, I installed MX Mariner. Haven't used its navigation functions enough to comment on them, but it does a good job of showing SE Alaska charts in detail, and where we are...

    chart plotter how to

Not trying to rain on your parade, but FWIW: My 2002 vintage Garmin 2006C chartplotter and and an earlier Garmin I had are quite intuitive - that's why I chose Garmin. Vastly better than my upper helm's Lowrance/Navionics chartplotter from a only few years ago. To get the 2006C's cursor to be...

    Scotty 2500 pot puller

Our cruising buds have one. Used it with them for shrimp in SE AK last summer - works great!

    Tomcat anchor

The new concave/scoop anchors (Spade, Rocna, Manson Supreme, etc) are terrific! After using a Bruce on our CD22, and a Bruce on our 26-footer, I switched to a 10kg Rocna a few years ago. Sets solidly very quickly, even in fairly kelpy bottoms, and holds like crazy.

    2016 Cruising Plans

New Moon will likely be launching in Prince Rupert, and spending some time in the area around Craig (best SE AK fishing we've found yet). This past summer we did more sightseeing and not so much fishing as in 2014. Seems like time to focus on fishing again for at least part of next summer...

    Decisions, decisions...

One major difference is that the 76 series is touchscreen, and the 1040 is not.

    Outboard vs. stern drive

We went from a CD22 with 90hp outboard to a heavy diesel sterndrive 26-footer. Quite the learning curve on setup and maintenance of the Volvo KAD44P engine and sterndrive. Our Yamaha 90 2-stroke had required almost no maintenance over 5-6 years and a lot of hours. Now that I understand to...

    Trailers and towing

FWIW, We pulled our CD22 Cruiser all over the mountains in Utah, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington with a 1989 Pathfinder. Less powerful than a current 4Runner, but lighter too, and a manual transmission so no worries about automatic trans reliability. For safety - control and...

    a trip to pelican...alaska

Pelican island? Do you mean the town of Pelican on Chichagof Island? We took our 22 Cruiser to Pelican in 1996. Have been there a few times since in our 26-footer. It's not a particuarly difficult place to reach safely, not much further out there than Elfin Cove. If you're coming west on...

Weight Difference between Honda and Yamaha Outboards

Ah for the good ol days of early 90's 90hp Yamaha 2-strokes - ours weighed only 276 lb as I recall. Nice except for small details like smoke, unpleasant noise, spluttering and vibration at idle, and poor fuel economy.......

    Tomcat anchor

They did have metallurgy problems with some anchors after they moved manufacturing to China. Resolved years ago, by the new owners, Canada Metal (Pacific) Ltd.

    Tomcat anchor

Hi Georgs, No personal experience with the Manson anchors, so I can't compare them. But 4 years ago I switched from a 7.5kg genuine Bruce to a 10kg Rocna, and I'm mighty pleased with its performance in SE Alaska, BC, and also Lake Powell, on our heavy 26' boat. Many hundreds of nights at...
