    From fishing to cruising transition

Hi Steve, Herring jigging with a Sabiki rig is productive, if you find schools of them. We've done really well collecting herring just off the floats in Petersburg, close to the fish processing plants. Sometimes we spot a school as we travel, and drop the Sabiki. I figure we should try more...

    From fishing to cruising transition

Hi Steve, Tlevak isn't scary as long as the current isn't ripping when you're there. We set shrimp pots most often in 300-350 feet, sometimes as little as 200-250. We look for rocky bottoms on shelves near deeper water, or "ravine" bottom configurations, where current will bring food and...

cruising from puget sound to campbell river and back

We've been through Dodd Narrows many times, in our CD22 and also our current 26-footer. At max current (10 knots?) it can get a little crazy, with standing waves if wind is opposed to current. At 4-6 knots or even more without opposing wind it's not tough - just be ready to make steering...

    From fishing to cruising transition

Steve, we'll be north of you much of our trip this summer, but plan to come down from Sumner Strait through Dry Pass to Craig mid July. In the next few days we should make it through Tlevak Narrows - maybe we can connect. We hope to mooch up some big Kings, and troll for a mess of Coho...

    Foods for Extended Cruising

Hi Harvey, Some of the stuff we take on our summers: 2% "UHT" milk in quart boxes - no refrigeration reqd until you open it. It comes in small boxes too, but they're much more expensive. Cold cereal. Yogurt, plain. Add canned fruit. Keeps a long time. Craisins - stock up in a store that...

    honda 135 on 22 cruiser?

It's way too heavy, IMO. Some 200 lb heavier than the 2-stroke 90 we had on our 22. Maybe you could sell it?

Hi Steve, Sounds like good plans. You have a great adventure ahead of you - maybe we'll see you up there this summer.

Tool kit for long road-trip? WHat am I forgetting?

Hi Sunbeam, Your discussion of pressure sounds right - I sure vary the pressure in my truck rear tires depending on how much I'm carrying. I guess I was assuming the tires would be sized to the trailer load. Better to have trailer tires a little over-inflated then under - they can got hot...

Tool kit for long road-trip? WHat am I forgetting?

You probably already know this, but just in case: I'd suggest the new tires should be balanced, and inflated to the max pressure on the sidewall.

    How safe are anchor swivels

I and my cruising buddy both had bad experiences with Kong swivels 15-20 years ago - they bent, and would have come apart had we not noticed and removed them. When I switched from a Bruce to a Rocna a few years ago, I started having rope and chain twist problems, apparently caused by the anchor...

Suggestions for high-quality trailer brake lines?

Hi Sunbeam, FWIW, when I did disc brakes, lines etc, I replaced my 10,000 lb Titan coupler with a 16,000 lb UFP model A-160. It's far superior in design, not just in cpacity.

Suggestions for high-quality trailer brake lines?

When I replaced 15-year-old drums with discs two years ago, I did brake lines too. Thermo-plastic brake lines from Pacific Trailers (the trailer's manufactrurer). http://www.pacifictrailers.com/Thermo-P ... ake-Lines/ Very easy to install, using a bunch of heavy-duty zip ties to hold in...

    Bottom Paint

Ten years ago this spring, I decided to bottom paint my 8-year-old boat. After some research, I chose Pettit Hydrocoat. Power-washed and scrubbed thoroughly, used a solvent to make sure no wax remained, and applied a sandless primer (2 coats), then the Hydrocoat (2 coats, or 3 where the...

    Ultimate Anchoring Package

FWIW, On New Moon we have a 10kg Rocna, 42 feet of 1/4" HT chain, spliced to 300 feet of 1/2" nylon. Bow roller is a Windline BRM-2, with a hefty bail added, mounted on a bow pulpit. The Rocna self-launches wonderfully. Not sure how comparable that setup is to the C-Dory though - the up...

    Active Captain for C map

Active Captain is another form of cruising guide, continually being updated and expanded by actual cruisers. As good as Waggoner and the "Exploring Series" guides are for the Inside Passage, AC has info on anchorages and marinas that's sometimes more detailed or more current than what's in the...

    Furuno vs Garmin in 2016

Hi Georgs, Maybe I've missed it, but do you already have a good sonar/fishfinder? If not, or if it's getting old, you might think about going with the 7610xsv, which includes sophisticated sonar capabilities for $200 more than the plain 7610. Even if you don't need another fishfinder right...

    Do Rocna Anchors self launch

I might have mentioned that adding a bail to our BRM-2 bow roller was an excellent improvement. The bail makes sure the rode does not jump out of the roller if we're bouncing around some while at anchor. I'd very much recommend having one.

    Do Rocna Anchors self launch

Not sure how applicable this is to the CD22, but: I had a 7.5kg Bruce on our 26-footer. It worked pretty well over many years (we do have lots of practice on anchoring technique), but I wanted something a bit more quick to set in difficult bottoms, and with greater holding power. Switched to...

    Boathook harpoon gaff combination

We also have the Shurhold boathook/gaff/brush. Very useful. FWIW, we've caught lots of sizable halibut, up to 120lb (bigger than 100 lb we almost always let go) without a harpoon or gun, just a wireman's gaff (big shark hook with a poly line tied to it and an eye spliced into the other end) and...

    Tomcat anchor

Hi Georgs, Don't know what depths you're going to be anchoring in, but for BC and SE Alaska (typically anchoring in 25-65 feet), I'd suggest 300 feet of New England Ropes (theirs is top quality) 1/2" three-strand, spliced to at least 30 feet of 1/4" HT (G43?) chain. For my much heavier (11,000...
