New to me Boat questions, round one

The Norcold fridge in my boat is ~17 years old and still works great.

    Generator Utility Platform

If you use a vented cap on the generator, it won’t draw from the external tank if the vent is open. The external tank needs its own vent. The cap with the hose barb is vented through the barb if there is not a separate vent or a hose attached. There is a video online on modifying a regular...

    Generator Utility Platform

The rise on a C-Dory is measured from the bottom of the tank (worst case scenario) to the fuel inlet on the generator, which if you use a ported cap is basically the top of the generator. You may get some help if you fill up the generator tank and the fuel feed line with fuel so that there are...

    Generator Utility Platform

I had my Honda 1000 gen hooked up to the spare outlet port on my Racor filter mounted at the transom. It did not work well. The Honda gens have a built in elevated fuel tank (in normal operation). The amount of lift they can provide for fuel delivery is quite limited.

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

External air pressure increases as you descend. This increases pressure on the outside of the tube, decreasing the pressure difference between the pressure inside the tube and the outside. As you ascend, the outside air pressure decreases, so the pressure differential increases. RIB and SIB...

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

Particularly in RIBs, the air pressure in the tubes is relatively low, ~1.5 psi, and the normal pressure range is about .5 psi. The tubes are also high volume which means a little change in temp has a bigger effect. Add in darker tubes (orange, gray, or black) and that more of the tube is not in...

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

More important to let out a little air before ascending. Going down isn't a problem.

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

I mean on the inflatable. I use the electric pump on the mothership (12vdc). IME, if you go on long excursions with the dinghy you might get a leak, which even if you patch it on the spot will require adding air to a tube. The other case is temperature swings. You might find that your...

    Charging Dual Batteries

Yes. I do it regularly and my batteries last a long time. But you should have the same type and size for both batteries.

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

Foot pump or hand pump is good to take with you in the dinghy when you are away from electricity and the boat needs a top up (leak or temperature change).

Cold Temperature Storage of Inflatable Dinghys

The foot pump will work, but depending on the size of the dinghy will take some work. If you buy an electric inflator, be sure to buy one that has a high pressure mode (meant for drop stitch things). A regular inflator (say for an air bed) will usually not be able to put out sufficient air to...

Trawlerfest Ft Lauderdale March 4-8 C-Dory?

Closest I've seen at any Trawlerfest are Ranger Tugs (including the 23' OB model).

    Generator Utility Platform

I tried that one my Honda EU1000. It could not draw fuel hard enough to get a constant flow. The generator would run poorly and surge. I ended up using a 3 gallon outboard tank that I can place closer to the generator. Maybe the 2000 has better fuel suction.

    New to this

Balsa and foam filler for composite construction each have their pluses and minuses. One is not hands down better than the other. It depends on the exact use case which one may be better. FWIW, you can have water intrusion into foam core that may result in similar problems as with balsa core...

    Puget Sound Loop Choices

Poulsbo, Bremerton, Tacoma, Ballard, Lake Washington, Hood Canal are places I would want to go. Depends on the time you have available. You could easily spend the whole summer there.

    Curtains for a C-Dory?

They covers look nice. What do you do with them when they are not on the windows. One thing about fabric curtains/covers is that they fold/roll up for storage.

    Repainting Honda BF90 outboard

I'd contact Boats.net and give them the details on your motor, they can probably help. It might be this...

1998 Honda BF90 spare parts to carry

If the timing belt breaks, the engine will not run for very long at all because the valve and ignition timing get way out of whack very quickly. It would be mostly inertia from the rotating parts and maybe some back drive from the prop in the water. The other issue with an older timing belt is...

1998 Honda BF90 spare parts to carry

If the timing belt lets go while the motor is running you will need to be a very expert mechanic with lots of spare parts and tools to ever get it working again. On the other, if you're not, you'll have a nice anchor.

1998 Honda BF90 spare parts to carry

    The BF90Ds have a chain.
