    2023 Delta and Bay Extravaganza

I hear ya on the seals. The original "right seals" would not fit my non-standard, Dexter axle hub diameter. So I bought another set from another manufacturer that fit the hub fine but dimpled slightly when I installed them in my standard Kodiak hubs, however, they were made for grease. The...

    2023 Delta and Bay Extravaganza

Sign Dora~Jean up for #4, Chips and Dip. I'll do some research on the best of both. Looking forward to the trip, and now with my newly installed oil-bath hubs.

How heavy is your anchor on a CD25 or 26?

I agree in theory with Thomas, chain is more important than the anchor. I use a Lewmar Delta 22lb and 25ft of chain (20 yrs). I have encountered 50-70 mph winds in a protected anchorage, 27ft deep water, ideal sandy bottom; no drift whatsoever. I have also drug anchor with less than 5 kts of...

    2023 Delta and Bay Extravaganza

Hey Colby, just read you're going try to make the Delta trip. Wonderful. We will be there on Tuesday, the 2nd, also. After launching late afternoon and settling in, we always walk to the Pizza Factory in town, great pizza and salad. Will the Mrs. be going as well?

    17th Annual Catalina Off-shore Adventure, August 7, 2022

Feasible? Sure--some have come from as far as San Francisco, a multi-day trip by water. Would I do it? No, for two reasons: 1) Too many on-the-water miles, and 2) Prevailing NW winds would put you straight into the chop and swells--however, leaving at daybreak would most likely avoid most of...

    Cockpit scupper broken and lost

I replaced my factory, cheap, rubber flap scuppers the first week I owned my boat before even putting it in the water. I used the ping pong ball type, very happy with them. The hole pattern was almost a perfect match, such that I didn't need to drill any holes.

Help for a sailor looking to convert?

I second Dr Bob's and others' information. Here's a little of my story. I too came from a sailboat, F-31 Corsair trimaran. Actually I've had 7 sailboats and 7 powerboats, all trailerable and all ocean capable (some were questionable on that, my younger years were a little bolder). I think every...

    2022 Erie Canal

Happy belated Birthday Colby. You are the type of person that makes the most of every minute. My wife is that type of person, me not so much, I worry too much. I hope we cross paths again in the near future.

    2022 Erie Canal

That fish dinner looked incredible. Interesting Ice Cream history and facts, thanks. I see the temperature in your area is in the low 80's, maybe even cooler, waaay better than us in SoCal, 100+, we can fry eggs on the sidewalk or bake cookies for free. Arrrgh.

Now on the Oil Bath Bandwagon

Sorry Dr Bob, I stand corrected on Tie Down Engineering, thanks. I 'presumed' Tie Down was gone because when I put in the saved URL I have, I get redirected to eTrailer. Probably computer magic, I don't know. Another correction. I meant I found shallow 'grooves' on my spindle sealing surfaces...

Now on the Oil Bath Bandwagon

Some additional information. I'm not sure if the load on the bearings is a factor in potential problems, i.e., a CD22 (~5,000 lbs) vs a CD25 (~8,000 lbs). I do have an excellent TPMS unit (Hawkshead from Canada) and I monitor pressures and temperatures religiously; it has saved my bacon a couple...

Now on the Oil Bath Bandwagon

After nearly 20 years experiencing the joys (not) of Buddy Bearings and grease I finally bit the bullet and converted to the oil bath system. Seems like the gods have been against me on the old grease system, there are very few others I've talked to that have had the extent of problems that I...

    17th Annual Catalina Off-shore Adventure, August 7, 2022

Yes Colby, it would be great to see you again. Long trip for you though. Jim, another excellent trip in the books, thanks again for your superior planning and guidance. The Monday evening BBQ was one of the best we have ever had that I can remember. You can't get that quality of food in a...

    Horn does not work.

After going through 3 different manufacturers of "marine" horns, I thought about it and determined you almost never heard of a car horn going bad, and some of them reside in some very salty areas. So I bought a cheap Hyundai, dual frequency set of horns 5 years ago, still going strong. Next will...

    SE Alaska group cruise 2022

Thanks for the info on the highway conditions. Great trip, glad you made it back safely. Some thoughts on your dead batteries. All vehicles have some parasitic current loss. Some more than others. For months-long trips like this, would it be prudent to disconnect the battery (...ies) and put...

    SE Alaska group cruise 2022

Great writeup Jay and Jolie, I'm following it closely. I want to do SE Alaska as well (it's on my bucket list). Have a question on the drive to Skagway. Do you still need hull protection from rocks kicking up from the highways or are they somewhat improved since 20 yrs ago?

    17th Annual Catalina Off-shore Adventure, August 7, 2022

I'll do #6, ice cream (and condiments). Thanks again for the exceptional organizing, Jim. I'm "planning" on arriving at MDR as well on Sunday afternoon, we'll see.

    17th Annual Catalina Off-shore Adventure, August 7, 2022

Jim, count me in. So far, nothing in the way. There was mention of a fishing trip during this event. We’ve been lucky and successful on all of the previous fishing excursions we’ve undertaken during this cruise, hopefully we’ll have a chance again this year. Fish fry, yeah!!!
